Ignore NFS and NIS; you would use those for one Unix machine talking
to another. The system you want here is Samba (www.samba.org). It is
fully documented there, and a version is included in RedHat.

First, download and build a fresh copy from www.samba.org (the copy
included with RedHat 5.2 is older). Now read up on the installation
instructions; what you want is Samba running as a PDC (Primary Domain
Controller). Get it installed and working that way, per the
instructions.

Next, put the NT machines into the domain you created in Samba; they
should now see it as an option for logon.

If you have any problems, drop me a line; I'll try to talk you through
it in more detail.

Subject: Sending ethernet frames
From: Esben Haabendal Soerensen <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Hi

What is the best way of transmitting ethernet frames with minimal
overhead from inside the kernel ?

I am writing a real-time application running inside the kernel which
need to send out ethernet frames (with garbage data) with very precise
timing and low overhead.

Can anyone tell me how I should do this, or perhaps guide me in the
right direction (what kernel functions I should look at).

Hi!

I tried yesterday to get my Teles 16.3 up and running under Linux 2.2.5
(stock-kernel from Redhat6.0), using the most recent kernel-patches and
isdn-utilities from CVS. (ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/isdn4linux/v2.2/)

I managed to get the card working (or so it seems, it gets detected, and
it accepts the settings I give it by using isdnctrl).

The problem is however, that upon giving it a 'isdnctrl dial ippp0', it
doesn't connect properly. It connects to my ISP, assigns IP-addresses, and
"dies" when trying to set the defaultroute, whith this error-message from
ipppd:

ioctl(SIOCADDRT) device route (ippp0/129.x.x.x/ffffff00): Network is down

I have looked through everything I could find on dejanews regarding problems
relatetd to this, but no one seems to have the exact same problem, or most
problems seems to be related to the use of old utilities on wrong kernel-
patches, but I'm running the latest of both.

Maybe I should downgrade the utils, or the kernel patches? I have used
Teles 16.3 under 2.0 for quite some time without any problems, and it's
usually been a breeze to setup..

Are there any people out there who actually managed to get Teles 16.3 to
work properly using a 2.2-kernel?

Date: 9 May 1999 14:38:42 -0400

i'm sure someone in the know has a very quick and easy
answer for this, but i've been banging my head against
the wall for 2 days now.

i have a 100meg ethernet connecting 2 NT boxes and a
Linux box. the Linux box is also connected via ADSL
to the Internet. the Linux box is using IP masquerading
to allow the 2 NT boxes to "connect" to the Internet.
one NT box connects perfectly, performing name resolution
through my ISP's name servers, telneting to boxes out
in the Internet, etc. the other NT box can ping any
IP address, including IP addresses out on the Internet,
but it can not telnet or use name resolution. it can't
even telnet into the Linux box sitting right next to
it (but it can ping it!) when telnetting, i *immediately*
get a connection refused. (i made sure the boxes are
in my /etc/hosts.allow file.)

here's my /etc/rc.d/rc.firewall script (stripped of
most comments):

#!/bin/sh
#
# rc.firewall - Initial SIMPLE IP Masquerade test for 2.1.x and 2.2.x kernels using
IPCHAINS

/sbin/depmod -a
/sbin/modprobe ip_masq_ftp
/sbin/modprobe ip_masq_raudio
/sbin/modprobe ip_masq_irc

echo "1" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
echo "1" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_dynaddr

# MASQ timeouts
ipchains -M -S 7200 10 60

# Enable simple IP forwarding and Masquerading
ipchains -P forward REJECT
ipchains -A forward -s 172.18.0.0/20 -j MASQ
ipchains -A forward -s 172.16.0.0/20 -j MASQ

here's the output of "ipchains -L":

Chain input (policy ACCEPT):
target prot opt source destination ports
ACCEPT udp ------ anywhere anywhere bootpc -> bootps
Chain forward (policy REJECT):
target prot opt source destination ports
MASQ all ------ 172.18.0.0/20 anywhere n/a
MASQ all ------ 172.16.0.0/20 anywhere n/a
Chain output (policy ACCEPT):

the NT box which works fine is 172.16.0.2. the
NT box which does not work at all is 172.16.0.6.

the IP address is the only difference in their
configurations, and as i said, they can all ping
everything just fine.

please help!

In RH5.0 we could only get 2 cards to work if they were of different makes.
We ended up using one ne2000 and one 3c509. I think this has been
resolved in RH5.2, but I haven't setup another dual homed host lately.

If you use fiber to copper media converters you can use regular NICs and
not have to worry about drivers.

Date: Sun, 09 May 1999 19:33:39 GMT

I am using a linux box as a NAT router trying to forward incomming Netware 5
IP traffic to a different host on the internal network...

I have been looking for info on generic modules to do this, can't find any.
(probably my ignorance)

Currently I forward http, ftp, nntp to internal servers for external users.

But would like to set up these TCP & UDP redirectors to replicate & use
Netware 5 IP services over the internet.

Any suggestions?

Because will POP3 you can download email and still have it remain on
the server, or download mail for some accounts but not others. AFAIK
you can't do this with SMTP.

> You will need to prevent sendmail from getting the mail from Demon.

How? My understanding is that there should be a sendmail.m4 file
which m4 converts to sendmail.cf, which controls how sendmail works.
However, there is no sendmail.m4 on my system. sendmail.cf looks a
bit intimidating -- like rather bad ascii art in fact.

No, should I be? (I've got a dial-up account, not a machine permanently
connected).

Would this let me send mail? IOW, if I did this, would it stop sendmail

Is this working? I've tried both this and the webmail service. I've

I don't know anything about Slackware 3.6, but you may want to check for
a nsswitch.conf file in the /etc directory. In later versions of most
distributions, the nsswitch.conf file is used to tell the resolver
libraries which name resolution methods it should use and in which
order. Options include, but are not limited to, DNS, hosts files, and
NIS. If you have this file, then the bet is that Slackware 3.6 DOES use
this file. Look for a line starting with hosts: and make sure that it
has 'files' as one of the options, preferably the first.

Then, check out your /etc/resolv.conf if your nsswitch.conf had that as
one of the options (your computer wouldn't use DNS at all if it wasn't
listed). Make sure your domain and nameservers are set appropriately.

Slackware MAY keep backup copies of all configuration files and write
new "blank" ones when you do an upgrade, much like RedHat saves old
configs in .rpmsave files. If this is the case, you're computer may
APPEAR to be working fine, but chances are you will need to do a find of
all files ending in whatever Slackware may save the old configs as and
manually upgrade the configs to your old settings...

Fred

Subject: HELP I can't connect to my ISP!
Date: Sun, 9 May 1999 21:38:10 +0200

I have problems setting up an PPP-Conection to my ISP. When I try to connect
to my ISP, PPPD returns code 2 (???) or some other programs say the modem
doesn't respond or can't initialize.
My modem is connected to COM3 in DOS/WINDOWS and works fine in Windows.
Linux should recognize my modem, because it once connected but the
connection was broke after 2 minutes (I wasn't able to surf on the WWW). I
used the programs KPPP (from The K Desktop Environment) and X-ISP. I'm new
to linux so please help me!!!

Thanks

Bram van Leur

P.S. Sorry for my bad English. I'm from Holland
