I have been trying to get my ppp working on my home computer for several
days.
In the message file, I get a connect and a link from the modem to ppp0,
but never get any ip addresses assigned. The debug file gives me the
sent lcp (or something like that repeated 9 times). If I crank the
debugging up I get a shlooe of EO EO EO ...
Has anyone ever had a similar problem? Could it be modem related? I am
using an older US Robotics Sportser Voice 33.6. I don't beleive that
this is one of those stupid winmodems. Anyway I'm probing for any
hints....

Printers can easily be shared by both machines. I would recommend that you
get the latest version of samba 2.0 at samba.org. It seems to be very fast
& efficient. The documentation included with that package will inform you
how to set up samba and share printers/files as necessary.

Why should this be a problem?

NT can route IP asswell so no problem here. Except when you use MS Proxy 2.0 on
your NT server, since that communicates with WINSocks and Unix does not use win
socks.

enable encrypted passwords in your smb.conf file or make the reg change on
the Win98 machine as already stated. Be aware that this will be less secure
than using encrypted passwords.

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I am having an interesting problem.

I am running a thin ethernet network and using my linux box as an IP
masquerading server to allow access to the intenet via my dedicated
dial-up connection. Everything seems fine, except I cannot access
some
internet sites, namely www.s3.com and www.amd.com.

This is not a problem with my ISP, since if I boot windows on the
Linux
box, it connects to those sites with no problems. When I am running
Linux, neither the Linux box itself or any of the machines that Linux
is
masquerading for will properly connect to those domains (the WHOLE
domain).

When I load Netscape on any of my Windows machines (one 98 and one
95) and
try to go to www.s3.com, it says "Transferring Data from www.s3.com."
and
just sits there for eternity. When I try to FTP into ftp.s3.com
(with a
client machine OR the linux box) after I type "ls" the first time,
the
connection stalls as well.

I am relatively new to Linux, but managed to read docs and figure out
how
to set up the IP masquerading for my LAN, but I have no idea where to
start looking to solve this poblem.

Please help.

Subject: Help with simple manual network configuration
Date: Tue, 02 Feb 1999 20:52:35 GMT

First off, I'm running RH5.2, and using the linuxconf tool to make the
changes. I know that my ethernet card works fine because I've been
able to connect to the internet using DHCP to set up my network info,
but for reasons too long to explain here, I NEED to do a manual
setup, and not rely on the DHCP, but I am new to networking issues,
and am frankly stumped. Two things that I notice in nestscape (while
using my attempt at a manual configuration):

  1. Netscape fully loads a local html file upon start-up, yet netscape

continues to suck nearly 100% CPU until I kill it. Why??

  2. While it is in the above state, mysteriously at nearly 100% CPU,
I click to an external webpage. The status bar at the bottom
just
reads something like "contacting proxy..." and kinda flickering,

like it cant resolve the proxy address or something....

Now obviously I've screwed something up, but I'm not sure what it
is... I will post all of my current configuration info below. Please
let me know if you see anything stupid or wrong... I've tried every
combination of things I could think of but yet to no avail...

Thanks for your help... It is MUCH appreciated!

Here is a website that you can find the very LATEST linux drivers for that
card:

http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/vortex.html

I have the 3C905B running in many servers including a dual processor kernel.
This page will give you options of downloading precompiled versions or
provides the source for you. I recommend grabbing the source and following
the compile instructions at the bottom (also includes instructions for
compiling on SMP dual processor kernels!). Then replace the module and
either reboot or run modprobe and you should be good to go.

When I first installed the card on my boxes it would never autodetect the
line (half/full duplex or 10/100). After compiling it always autosenses
correctly on bootup (Granted I also have 3Com switch :).

I guess it's a simple thing. Did you d/l the package with "this other
os" and then copied it to a linux partition?
In this case the dots between the name-parts are converted by Windows
because Windows cannot work with filenames with several dots. Just
rename:

mv traffic-vis-0_23-1_i386.rpm traffic-vis-0.23-1.i386.rpm

because rpm looks for the i386 part.

Subject: A delni as a hub
Date: Wed, 03 Feb 1999 02:34:37 -0500

Is it possible to use a DELNI as a hub for a small ether net. I have 2
Novell NE-1000 network cards and a DELNI. I know that the actual purpose
of a DELNI is to act as a multi-port transiever from the main bus but
I would like to use it as a hub to make a small network to learn about
this wonderful technology. I recived the equipment and wiring (Thick
Transiever Cable) in a job lot and would am unable to invest in newer
technology right now. I have sucessfully configured the cards (Linux
recognizes them and ifconfig returns information about them) but I can't
getr the 2 computers talking to each other through the DELNI when
connected to ports 1 and 2. I get a time out message. I have also
recieved this same message using PLIP but I belieeve that this is due to
the low speed of the parralell port on the one computer. I need to
network the 2 computers under redhat 5.2 and kernel 2.0.36 in order to
install Linux on the 1 computer that does not have a large enough hard
drive to hold the installation and install it (I got Redhat 5.2 via FTP
but I still have all of the original packages)

The other option that I do have is to use some older ARCnet card with
RJ-11 TP cable but the installation boot disk does not have support for
ARCnet wich is beyond me because all ARCnet cards use the same driver.
If I could somehow boot off of a boot disk and then mount the
NFS filesystem through ARCnet and the install linux that would work. The
problem is that I have no idea how to invole the install program from
the command line. I also am not sure how to compile a Kernel and get
everything needed into a disk etc. I do not have any BNC cable, T's or
terminators or I would use these on any one of 3 types of interfaces.
ARCnet, Ethernet or good old Token ring. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

Thank you in advance. (please reply to email address as well as this is

Subject: Re: PPP question, looking for advice on direction
Date: Wed, 03 Feb 1999 02:50:01 -0500

I am not sure which way is better or the 'correct' way but this is how I got
connested.

1) I set up the modem at install and the again in the control panel of X
2) I added a PPP interface in the network configuration under the interfaces
tab.
3) I added the DNS server addresses under the namees tab in the nameservers
box.
4) I quit the network configuration (save the info)
5) I loaded the Usernet form the networking menu and clicked on ppp0

Hints:
Make sure you click to make the interface (un)activated by all users or else
you will have to log in as root to connect

If you close the Usernet program without deactivating the ppp0 then you will
have to pull the phone socket out of the wall to get it to hang up. I am sure
that there is an easier way but I have yet to figure it out.

You might want to check the box that doesn't allow the computer to
automatically redial on disconnect located in the advanced options of the
interface setup menu.

Good luck I hope that this has helped some.
P.S. Make sure that your modem is a real modem and not a winmodem. If it's a
winmodem then go and buy yourself a real modem. I got a real 56K modem for
about $60 CDN (ISA modem's are almost always real modems)

Fire up PCMCIA by hand after booting, with all your cards ejected, by

You may also want to upgrade your PCMCIA driver package, since what

Does the contract actually say the Windows is required? Or simply that it

My ADSL provider says I can use *nix but that they only support Windows

Hi,

I am having problems with ping under Redhat Linux 5.2.

ping works fine if it gets a response. If ping doesn't get a response,
though, it never times out. It just sits there forever:

$ ping 34.34.34.34

I have two machines with Redhat Linux 5.2, and ping has this problem on
both machines. ping worked fine under Redhat 4.2. (It would time out
after about 10 seconds.)

Do anyone have any idea what the problem could be? I am doing automated
network testing, so I need ping to timeout correctly.
