Keith,

Take a real good look at your isapnp.conf file. The isapnp tools that come
with RH 5.2 couldn't identify my modem (USR 56K internal faxmodem)
properly. I think it was getting confused by my sound card or something.
Anyway, the problem I was experiencing was the pnpdump utility was getting
the wrong number in the parameter that identifies the Local (or Logical?)
Device number for the modem:
(CONFIGURE USR3050/4104249251 (LD 0
The last 3 characters on the above line are very important.
As I understand it, each pnp card may have several local devices installed
on it. (midi, dsp, synth and so on for sound cards...) These are numbered,
per card, starting at 0. Problem was that the darn utility wasn't resetting
the LD value after it finished identifying my sound card devices and so the
resulting LD value it was trying to use on the modem was 4. It should have
been 0. It took me a little while to track this down.
Also, you may need to play around with the IRQ and ports assigned to the
modem in the isapnp.conf file. It'll probably be necessary to use setserial
to make sure the TTYSx you're wanting to use for the modem is properly
configured for the UART, port, and IRQ of the modem. I can probably help if
ya run into problems on that. (I've done it a few times now... )
I recently upgraded to RH6. There's a whole new bag of crap to sort through
to get the modem working there...
All in all, once it's working, it's an excellent piece of hardware.
Good luck,
Jeff Howard

I don't think this is necessarily tied to an atomic clock but ntp works
quite well for me.
Take a look at http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~ntp/

Hi all,

    I've got some code that I used on various UNIX OSs (AIX, 390, HPUX)
and which was working on RedHat 5.2, which uses sendmsg and recvmsg to
pass data over a socketpair between two processes. Problem is, this
code is no longer working on RedHat 6.0; I get an errno of EINVAL when
the sendmsg executes. Has anyone else seen this, and does anyone know
if there might have been an API change (highly unlikely since is UNIX
standard API) or a major rewrite of the socket layer between the RedHat
5.2 release (using the 2.0.36 kernel) and RedHat 6.0 (using the 2.2.5
kernel) which could account for this? At present, it seems to me that
these methods are broken - especially since this code works fine on AIX
4.3.x, HPUX 11.0, OS390, and RedHat 5.2. Any help you can give me would
be greatly appreciated (at present, I'm diving into the 2.2.5 kernel
source looking for answers as well as writing up a test case to
illustrate the bug). Since these groups get so much activity, please cc
any replys to my email (work or home is fine).

Thanks!

I have managed to get Appletalk to work as far as getting the server to show
up in the chooser on the Mac. There are two options "Guest Volume" and "User
Volume".

When I try log in to "Guest Volume" it asks for a username and password,
which I don't know. I have tried many possibilities and nothing works. It
says the password is wrong please try again.

How and where do I define such a user and password?

When I try and log in to "User Volume" it says "Server did not use a
recognizable log on sequence".

Here are the setup files...
afpd.conf
        "Guest Volume" -cleartxt -loginmesg "Welcome guest!"
        "User Volume" -noguest -loginmesg "Welcome user."

following situations:
- You run a server of some kind and one kiddy is trying to block access by
  rapidly connecting to the server, thus tying up all open connections. Even if
  you close the connection immediatly after accept(2)ing it it will still tie
  up some resources on the server for a while (or doesn't it?)
- a bad client is trying to suck the contents of your server over a slow line.
  That means he will probably open multiple connections and each of these will
  stay open for a while. If you kill the connection it will tie up some
  resources of the system for a while, while the client is trying to reconnect
  just to continue sucking.

A solution to these situations would be if I could take a look into the
listen-queue and just delete unwanted clients from the queue BEFORE accepting
them. Better yet - reorder the queue so that new clients come first and clients
which already have some connections open have to wait. Something like this:

        put_socket_into_listen_state
        while ( wait_for_somebody_to_connect ) {
                while( client = pop @all_clients_in_listen_queue ) {
                        if (client is bad)  { throw_away }
                        elsif (client is already_connected )  {
                                put_client_at_the_end_of_the_queue
                        } elsif (client is good_friend) {
                                accept_immediatly
                        } else { put_client_at_the_beginning_of_the_queue }
                }
                if (somebody_in_queue) {
                        accept
                        handle_client...
                }
        }

Is there anything like this or do you have other ideas how to handle these
situations?

Are these *real* Redhat distributions, or are they the Macmillan
distributions like all the RH5.2 copies at Staples and Costco are?
The Macmillan distros require you to register with them instead of
Redhat for support (or so says the registration card included in the
box).

If support is of concern to you, you might want to double check.

Zombies are stopped processes which don't exist anymore, but their return
value has still to be returned to the parent.
When the parent is not collecting those return values, you get zombies.

It doesn't cost you any CPU time or memory, but it spoils your process
table.

To find out which program causes the zombies, run `ps axj` to show the
parent process of your zombies. That one is the poluter.

The zombies itself cannot be the cause of your problems but the parent can
be.

Hi I have linux running on a laptop and everything works fine including the

to initialize; this is only because the PCMCIA card services havent started
up yet and once everythings loaded the PCMCIA card works fine network is
fully accessible etc etc. I just dont like seeing the failure message when
i boot its not pretty and all that so i was wondering if anyone knows if its
possible to swap the order somehwere so that the card services start then it
tries to initialize eth0

Do you notice that those are both the same?

That route to 192.168.10.2 seems bogus...

What is the 'dummy0' device? Are you perhaps running IPAlias? If so, Why?

I'd probably delete that route to dummy...
  "route del 192.168.10.2"
But it doesn't appear to be used, so it probably won't matter.

Other than the questionable dummy, that info looks good.
