Hi all,
I think that the subject says all.
I have a Linux box used to give access to a 192.168.x.x class using
masquerade and it's working fine.
Also behind this RH 6 I have an email ,www and 2 others servers
listening on 3456 and 3216 ports.
Is there a way to hide those ports from a scanner ?
Thanx

I collect mail via pop3 by not running sendmail when the machine starts and
then configuring fetchmail (via the .fetchmailrc file) to add an 'mta' line
at the bottom:
.fetchmailrc (incomplete example)
proto pop3
mta "/usr/bin/sendmail -bm username"
This has the disadvantage that if I wish to collect email on the linux
machine for another user I must fetch the mail again with a different rc
file but I do this so rarely that it's not inconvenient. This combined with
a small .procmailrc to junk the spam has made mail handling quite easy.
Now, if I could only figure out why I cannot connect to Demon via the Linux
machine 4 out of 5 tries (and yet always can from windows) I'd be happy.

That's a part of basic security setup. *never* run services you don't need.

it's variously called firewalling or packet filtering. The 2.2.x series has
a newer flavor called "IP Firewall Chains".
> It's probably easier to put them into /etc/hosts.allow,
>/etc/hosts.deny. Look in the manpages.
It may be easier, but it's more secure to do both /etc/hosts.alloy & deny
plus packet
filtering. Always think "defense in depth".
I suggest the original poster visit
http://www.wolfenet.com/~jhardin/ipfwadm.html for a GUI wrapper around the
firewall.

Subject: PPP on Linux
Date: Mon, 10 May 1999 13:32:27 -0400
I have Gateway 9100 laptop with Slackware linux and kernel 2.2.3 on
it.
I have pcmcia modem & ethernet card, both seems to work Ok.
Now I'm trying to create dial-in PPP connection using pppd-2.2, it
successfully connects,
sets local IP address (x.y.z.102 and remote IP address (x.y.z.1) , but I
can't connect to any
computer on x.y.z.0 subnet. I thought it may be routing problem, so I've
added route:
route add -net x.y.z.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 gw x.y.z.102
But this doesn't help ether...
Any ideas?
Some more questions:
1. Which version of pppd is better to use? I have 2.2 & 2.3.5 installed
by Slackware, but
for some reason pppd is link to 2.2...
2. Is there are any problems to have both link (ethernet & ppp) to be up
at the same time?
3. I'll need to have some separate options for ppp connection (different
phones, networks etc.)
what is the best way to handle it?
Thanks in advance,

Well, this just tells us that you do have a serial port configured as
/dev/cua1 , 0x2F8h and IRQ 3 .
a) /dev/cua* devices don't exist anymore. Use ttyS1 instead .
b) This is NOT your modem , unless you disabled the secondary
onboard port in your CMOS . Internal modems should be found
on /dev/ttyS2 or /dev/ttyS3, if configured correctly.
c) Your isapnp.conf file needs editing.

This one has "HINT" written all over it.
Uncomment the corresponding lines for a modem on /dev/ttyS2
(0x3E8h) and give it an otherwise unused IRQ .

Brian,
It may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer but, I have had good luck with
the Linksys 10/100 cards. They are only about $30.00 and are supported in the
later kernels. I am using them in 2.0.36 and 2.2.7 kernels without problem.
Compile in the DEC "Tulip" chip support.

That's because windows doesn't tell the modem that it just crashed.
As long as the modem doesn't disconnect mgetty doesn't respawn.

To me, it sounds like a routing table problem not on the router, but on the
other two hosts. Do you have your router (Linux) machine configured as the
default router (sometimes called "default gateway") on those other machines?
Check this by trying "traceroute other_machine" instead of "ping
other_machine".

Well here's my prob:
After installing RH6, i had some trouble getting the mount command to
work, as there seem to be several different mount.8 man pages around,
but that's working now.
My problem is that the file info being displayed when i mount a NT
share, is not correct (dates are wrong), and when something is changed
and Linux does an update on my NT share, lots of dates are lost.
After reading some stuff, i found out that this problem was dealt with
in early 1998.
I've tried compiling 2.2.7 but when i upgrade the smbfs.o module
the mount command won't function anymore :(
During this process i also did a recompile of the samba sources
being RPM version 2.0.3-8
What am i missing ??

This may sound stupid, but arent you just looking for the hostname command?
"hostname <new fqdn>"
Youll have to tell your ISP or the organization that manages your DNS domain that
you changed the hostname of course.
For permanent changes, also edit /etc/sysconfig/network (RH 5.2 and possibly
others).

Sounds like waiting for identd reuqests to time out or double reverse
name testing. These are definately features of tcpd (aka. tcp
wrappers). You might not get the same behaviour with ssh (recommended
replacement for rsh and rlogin).

In most dsitributions just turn on ftp in /etc/inetd.conf and get
inetd to re-read its configuration file by sending in a HPU signal
(killall -HUP inetd suffices). If you want to run an anonymous ftp
server read some good books on security first and make sure you keep
ftpd up to date. The stock RH one features several root exploits (all
of which cause buffer overruns in the buggy realpath function, need I
say more?). The latest wuftpd is secure.
