Subject: Ethernet VERY slow from Linux to Windows?
Date: Tue, 11 May 1999 16:49:04 +0200

Hello,

i have a strange problem with 2 pc with Ethernet.

I use Windows98 on a pc with Celeron 333 128M with an economic Ethernet ISA Novel2000
card,
and Linux RedHat5.2 on a Pentium 150 64M with an economic Ethernet PCI Novel 2000 card.

Using FTP (and samba, Zannet NFS, and so on...) the data transfer from Windows to
Linux is
about 600K/sec, BUT the data transfer from Linux to Windows is about 7K/sec!!!

This is a great problem, because in some situations Windows98 freeze because of this.

Another problem: when i used the command "yes" with an emulator like Ewan, Windows95
freeze!!!
(i have not tried it with Windows 98). I am sure that the the problem is that such
command generates
bytes very fast, and probably Linux creates big datagrams. If i insert some delay in
the main loop
the command works well.

Maybe there are some problems with the TCP/IP implementation with Linux or Windows?

Someome can help me?

Thank you.

it has to do with the routing tables on the win98 boxes. they have a defult
route set up when they access the internet that uses the ppp connection.
you need to update the routing on the windoze boxes to use the ethernet
card as the route to addresses in 10.x.x.x
a login script off the NT domain controller can do it for all of them, if
you're in a NT domain :)
if you're not, you'll need to get creative as to how you'll do all of them,
that is, without actually sitting down in front of each machine..

I use Slackware and configure my fqdn with netconfig, where I have to write
the name and domain separately which joined form the fqdn.

This is one part of the issue. The other part is dns server for your domain
which determine the name your machine is known to the word. Ideally the name
your machine is known itself would be the same dns knows. May be you have to
talk with the dns administrator.

I experience this also. I just don't use Aliases. It might be possible to
use a Symbolic or Hard Link ( 'ln -s' or 'ln') on the files and the Mac
might use the file being pointed to.

There's also an alternative. Create a Self-mounting diskimage with
ShrinkWrap or DiskTools. Place the image file on the Appleshare volume. If
you double click it's alias on the Mac side, it will automatically try to
mount the Linux-Appleshare volume, then immediately mount the disk image.
You're drawbacks here are having 2 volumes mounted and possible data
corruption of disk image being written to. But, you can make copies of the
disk images and replace them back very quickly.

Later, Markus.

I have a dedicated dialup account to my internet provider. I keep the line
up by the use of a daemon that pings an address every few minutes. If the
ping fails the daemon runs my connect script. A few weeks ago I noticed that
my connection was down ! For some unknown reason the modem was not reacting
to the connect script. I did notice that on the modem the "OH" light was not
on but the "CD" and "TR" still were ! (When the modem receives a "SIGHUP" all
three lights should turn off.) And using "ifconfig" reports a connection
even thought there really isn't ! If I turned the modem off and back on the
 connect script will again work.

I am totally baffled by this because this setup
has been working perfectly for the last couple of years. And this does not
happen every time the connection is killed. (but when it does the only cure
is to turn the modem off and back on)

I've replaced the modem thinking that could be the problem; but it wasn't. :(

Here is the message from my "messages" file the very first time this
 happened. I should note that the "garbage" here has never appeared since;
only the "alarm" and "failed" messages kept appearing. Although during the
last few days not even those have appeared ! And the "Hangup (SIGHUP)" is
 not appearing either !

experiences Linux users have had with cellular modems.

The official phone sites (e.g. www.nokia.com ) say windows is a

Do you get an AT prompt with a cellular modem or are they winmodems ?

I would also like to be able to manage the address book on the phone. Is
this done with AT commands or is proprietry software required ?

Set up the linux box to connect to your ISP. Read up on demand-dialing.

Yes, but it will be slower, obviously, the more clients that use it.

Yes.

Yes. Though this depends on how you want it to work and whether or not
all the computers on the LAN have proper registered IP addresses or just
internal ones.

Would probably be handy.

You could certainly do that. Again how would depend on how your ISP
delivers mail, and how your users want to pick it up.

I think you'd probably get better answers if you set up as much as you
can by yourself and then come to the group when/if you come across a
specific problem. Pretty much everything you've asked about here is
covered in at least some depth by the relevant how-tos and
documentation.

I am trying to set up a NAT box so that I can set up a "virtual" web server. So
far I have got my two ethernet cards installed and configured, one with a
"real" IP address (eth0), and one with a 198.16.2.x address (eth1). I have IP
forwarding turned on in the kernel, I have the /proc filesystem enabled, and in
my /etc/sysconfig/network script, I have "FORWARD_IPV4" set to "Yes".

However, when I use ipfwadm to try to set up a routing policy (by using
"ipfwadm -F -a accept", or even just "ipfwadm -F -l" to list policies), I get
the error "Cannot open file /proc/net/ip_forward".

I have yet to find any postings on Deja or anywhere else relating to this error

Hi all,

I am going to be setting up a client/server network using a linux box
(RedHat 6.0). There are going to be about 6 nodes (Win95/98 machines)
that will need access to the internet.
I plan to use the private class C space (192.168.1.x) addresses for the
nodes (linux box on 192.168.1.1 sound ok?).
I would like to set the network up so that each node goes through the
server for net access. Of course, I'm using PPP to get to my ISP, so
I'll need some sort of way to do this. When a node wants 'net access,
can the server open a PPP connection from it to the ISP on demand? Will
it automatically hang up after a period of inactivity? What if one node
has already opened a connection? Will the server allow both nodes to use
the connection simultaneously?
Also, I'm wan the server to be able to pull POP3 mail off the ISP mail
server, and allow client machines (running netscape messenger or eudora)
to access their mail through accounts on our server, while outgoing mail
should go to the server for delivery to our ISP.
Sorry about being a bit long-winded, but I have a lot of questions.

Can someone give me an overview of how I should set this up, or point me
in the right direction?

Thanks,
Matt

Subject: ethernet transmit timeout problem
Date: Thu, 6 May 1999 22:58:06 +0300

Hi every one

Recently i have configured a Linux Box with two Micronet (rtl8139) netcards

This box works as a Forwarding machine with IP MSQ, having my intranet
straight to internet via LAN

Also the same box works as DNS, PROXY (squid), WWW (Apache) & Samba
server

Everything works fine without any serious problems, but one annoying syptom:

some times without any particular reason the macine gives the following
message

  << ethernet transmit timeout on eth0 (or) eth1 >>....

when this occurs everything that has to do with networking in my intranet
stops until i rebbot the box

I have alredy try to work the box stopping all the above srvices one by one
but still nothing happened

Can anybody give me a direction or a solution that has to do with my
problem?

Thanks in advance

Subject: [Newbie Question] Setting up a machine to allow Internet access over a network
Date: Mon, 10 May 1999 18:21:16 GMT

I have just started using Redhat Linux 5.2 on a spare 486 I have. I
use Freeserve for my Internet connection and have a small network of
two other Win95 machines using the basic sharing setup of Win95. I
want to know whether it is possible to set up my Linux box to act as
both a proxy server which will dial into my ISP when a request for
such an external page is made from one of the network machines and
whether I can download all of the e-mail from my account
([EMAIL PROTECTED]) and have it stored on the Linux machine
under the relevant user name (mark, simon etc... [e.g
[EMAIL PROTECTED] mail going to user mark].

Rather a lot there I know but any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Mark

I am trying to connect my RedHat 5.2 machine to Prodigy. When I dial up, it
is asking me for a Port Password. I called prodigy and all they could tell
me was to not use PPP, but to use the "regular" way. Does anyone know what
I can do or what they mean?

Thanks
Dominick

Hey, hes volunteering too... Perhaps you write the paragraph and sent it
to him (her?) for inclusion after this?

By selecting it at compile time. However, from the remaining of your mail
I assume you will want to write a RARP server, and as far as I know, you
dont need kernel support for that. Only if you need a RARP client do you
need to recompile your kernel.

You need a RARP server for that. Im not sure, but perhaps there is a
regular rpm for that. I searched on www.redhat.com on RARP and found a
lot of applicable documentation, so I guess thats where you should look.

What you need is IP-Masquerade to connect the private network to Internet
and there is a howto about it.

Subject: ethertap compiled in kernel vs. module
Date: Tue, 11 May 1999 18:31:29 GMT

Hi there,

I'm starting to use an application that makes use of the ethertap
device. My current problem/question is about running multiple
instances of ethertap.

After some futzing around in DejaNews and general archive
searching I seem to be able to get multiple instances running
fine when the ethertap device is compiled as a module.

My preference, however, is to compile the device into the kernel
and use it that way. Unfortunately I haven't had any success
getting more than the first instance of the device to run (using
2.2.6 and 2.2.7) when it is compiled in.

Is there something that I'm missing? Do I just have to run it as
a module for now? Is this a known limitation or is the limitation
in me?

Thanks for any assistance.

Dan Reagan

Hi,

What is the difference between 3C905 TX and 3C905B TX?
Hardware bug fixes or performance boost?

A shop tries to sell a 3C905 card to me in a bargain price
...
B or not(to) B, please? I have checked the 3Com webpage but
no information on the difference.

Thanks
