I want to hang up my ppp link via modem after no internet traffic is
sensed for some period of time e.g. when I have a huge ftp download and
leave it going into the night, not to waste time (money) on my isp
costs.
Any bash scripts gratefully accepted, thanks.

All,

I have a Unix(freebsd) and a Win 98 machine that I am trying to network
together to use the same internet connection and to be able to share
files. I currently can telnet to the unix machine but not the unix to
the 98 machine. Could anyone point me to a web page on how to setup up
Samba to work with win 98. I am new at this so I need good directions.

Thanks

The thread lies here:
When a hacker gets in to your so called "Bastion" host this can happen because
you allowed telnet logins from anywhere than the hacker can start software like
IP sniffers that check the ip traffic on you internal network (that is usally
masqed). ANd so grep passwords that are send un encrypted or data.

Or even worse, if you have mounting tools installed on your bastion host the
hacker can mount NFS or SMB sexports/shares and copy your files to his system
and perhaps sell the wanted data.

P.S. (I'm no hacker I only use my knowledge for good).

I am using a linux box as a NAT router trying to forward incomming Netware 5
IP traffic to a different host on the internal network...

I have been looking for info on generic modules to do this, can't find any.
(probably my ignorance)

Currently I forward http, ftp, nntp to internal servers for external users.

But would like to set up these TCP & UDP redirectors to replicate & use
Netware 5 IP services over the internet.

Any suggestions?

Hi:

Well I'm using RedHat 5.2 too. And I'm looking for the pcnfsd too,
because I need it.

I've found a source package on:
ftp://slug.ctv.es/pub/mirror/debian/dists/potato/non-free/source/net/pcnfsd_2.0.orig.tar.gz

... but the package as you see is for a debian distribution, and I still
have some problems compiling it.

once that was removed, this machine was able to
access the Internet through my Linux box.

btw, Linux is FABULOUS! and the IPCHAINS stuff is
just fucking WONDERFUL! i have 4 machines sharing

means i can't reach it with my 100meg ethernet, so
i'm using Linksys's HomeLink adapter. everyone in

now i just have to figure out how to get Linux to

My problem is that if a use dhcp to assign IPs to my client, when they try

Try (one by one):

1)
Try to change it from inside Linuxconf using one of the two other access
methods (console, X) go to:

Config | Networking | Misc | Linuxconf network access

Tick 'Enable net access' checkbox

2) In the same place: clear any entry in the fields (maybe this is
keeping you from access from the localhost).

3) If 1) & 2) fails, try a ping localhost or check with ifconfig if you
get the 'lo' device listed, maybe it is down or a route to yourself is
miss-configured.

The machine relay2.hlc.net thinks that it is not supposed to be
accepting mail for the companyname.com domain.

If this machine is your mail server, then it is misconfigured.

If this machine is your ISPs smart mail host, then I should complain to
them about it, unless (and probably even if) you're running your own
mail exchange that is supposed to handle all your mail.

If this machine is related to the sender's ISP, then they have their own
problems. This also applies if it's a machine that is somewhere in
between the sender and your own ISP. (As that suggests that one of the
machines in the middle is not set up properly.)

The problem is that some customers cannot send mails to us. Whenever
they do, it bounces back with the following error:::

Subject: fault-tolerance on linux servers?
Date: Tue, 11 May 1999 09:43:54 -0500

Hi all,

I need a bit of advice on setting up a couple of linux servers to be, to use
a buzz word, fault tolerant. At present I have a couple of big NT servers
with a (IMHO) fairly junky bunch of software that is supposed to allow one
of the machines to take over the functionality of the other machine should
one of them fail. The problem being: 1: The servers are NT servers. 'Nuff
said. 2: The fault-tolerance software causes more problems than it solves.
(Random crashes, etc) 3: The services running on the NT servers are
mission-critical.
The servers are currently configured with 2 NICs apeice. The first one on
each machine goes to an ethernet switch, and the second nic is connected via
a crossover cable to the second nic on the other server. Both servers are
running different services.
Finally, to the heart of my question, how can I set up 2 (or more, perhaps?)
linux servers in such a way as to allow one of them to detect a failure in
the other and to assume the duties that the other server was handling?
I've tried to look into clustering unix servers but all I keep running into
is Beowulf clusters. Is that what I need to study up on?
Any help/advice on this will be greatly appreciated. (Plus you get the added
benefit, and the warm, fuzzy feeling that comes with replacing 2 more NT
servers with linux ;-)

Thanks in advance,
Jeff Howard

I'd remove "lcp-max-configure 50" since it only extends the negotiation
time and won't help. I'd add the option crtscts since the modem likely
does hardware handshaking. I don't know whether this will cure your
problem but probably not.

The posted log shows that pppd is receiving the ISP messages and
understands them. The messages from the ISP arrive OK but the ISP
doesn't respond to any of the pppd messages sent to it so the messages
to the ISP must either be lost or arrive in some scrambled form.

At the start of the PPP negotiations it usually means the problem is in
the modem settings or the serial port device file configuration.

These are some things to look at:

Check the time between the sending the +++ATZ and the time you get the
OK response from the modem in your chat messages. More than 1 second
differene means that the IRQ for the device file is configured incorrectly.
I can't tell without the timestamps you omitted but I'd guess this isn't
the problem.

Check the UART setting for the device file with "setserial /dev/modem"
making sure it agrees with the type of the UART that the modem actually
uses. Also, the most common UART currently is 16550A and an external
modem of recent vintage won't work with a 16450 UART except at low speed
(14400 max and maybe 9600 max).

Instead of the chat expect/send  <'' +++ATZ>  try  <''  ATH0&F> which
hangs up and resets the modem to a factory default profile.

: * generic.chat

: TIMEOUT 60
: ABORT 'NO CARRIER'

: ABORT 'NO DIALTONE'
: ABORT 'ERROR'
: '' +++ATZ
: 'OK' ATDTXXXXXXX
: 'CONNECT' ''
: ogin: XXXXXXXX
: word: XXXXXXXX
: \~ ''

: And here are the messages generated by pppd:

<snipped>

: There seems to be a problem with the LCP packet which id=0x01. I tried
: different asyncmaps and a lot of the options of pppd, but
: I didn't succeed to get it work.

A problem at the very start of PPP link negotiations is not an asyncmap

Take a look at
http://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/ALPHA/linux-ha/High-Availability-HOWTO.html
has some links for commercial stuff as well.

Linux High Availability project http://www.henge.com/~alanr/ha/

I've not played with any of it yet, but am very interested in hearing more.

All this talk about using OmniClient and Samba - which I know would work,
but when recompiling my 2.2.7 kernel I noticed several network options which
allowed for Acorn protocols. Does this mean that I would natively be able to
see the acorns on the machine, simply having Samba configured to share
directories over a workgroup in a Peer-to-peer manner?

...or do I still need to go and completely reconfigure the Acorn machines?

Thanks,
Terence Parker.

Hello

No, ipmasq won't work with Netmeeting. But you can purchase a software
from australia called Phonepatch, do a websearch for phonepatch. It works
great in my linux ipmasq server. It's only $50.

No experience with wireless networking other then packet radio
but here is another site to take a look at. It was mention in a thread
about hooking up a 2.4GHz wireless connection, it was also mention
this was a bit on the expensive side as a alternative to the WaveLan
cards. the url is below.

www.breezecom.com

I'd like to try it myself :))

Subject: Address already in use problem???
Date: Wed, 12 May 1999 03:45:44 +0300

Hi all,

We have a tcp service listening on port 2000.
(/etc/services entry: leagore 2000/tcp)
When client or server aborts, it takes some time to restart
producing the message:

bind failed: address already in use (errno=102)

although neither server nor client is running.

what can should I do?

Thanking in advance
Kostis Mentzelos.
