Your last sentence makes no sense. If you are root, you are root. (Note that if you
have some nfs mounted filessystems which were not mountd to allow root access, then
yes, you may have trouble, but it would also be true fromt eh console)

Anyway
shutdown -r now
reboot
will both reboot the machine.

Hey again,

Well, that makes sense. But, what if both machines go down at the
same time (power failure)... and furthermore, what if the NFS client
comes back to life much quicker than the NFS server (because it has a
smaller disk drive and e2fsck takes much less time).... then,
effectively it appears to be the same as what I'm doing: one machine
trying to mount another machine (when the other machine isn't even
running yet).

Right now, we are having problems with this on our network. When we
have a power failure, at least one of our client machines (every time)
does not mount the server due to timeout. What we want to do is to set
up our NFS clients to try and try forever and ever, until they are
connected to the server. So, I was trying to manipulate the timeout
period and force RPC to not give up so soon....

??? Maybe I cannot do what I'm trying to do?

Although I'm sure you've tried this stuff before, here's some things
that I've found help whenever I get the "Operation not permitted" errors:

If you're mounting the drive using NFS, go to the host and try to delete
the files/directory

Do an "ls -lg" and make sure that the username under which you're trying
to delete the files/directories actually owns the files/directories.
This also applies to any parent directories - the "x" permission must
be set.

Try "rm -rf" *but be careful*

I've narrowed this problem down to Active Server Pages.

Now, I realize the ASP is a Microsoft thing, so am I just hosed?
Does Netscape for Linux actually load ASPes and my machine is just

Subject: Linux stops working
Date: Wed, 12 May 1999 13:59:37 GMT

I'm using a computer running GNU/Linux RedHat 5.2 with AOLserver 2.3.3
and Postgresql 6.4.2 as a webserver. The computer is on a C-class
network and has the IP-number 194.14.93.249, it does not have a
DNS-name, I'v just called it webserver. The computer is used to display
data from a weather station.
The problem is that sometimes something in the networking part of Linux
stops working (sometimes is anyting from ten seconds to two days). When
it happens it's not possible to connect to the webserver, but you can
ping TO it. However if I ping another computer on the same physical
network (194.14.91.12) FROM the webserver all I get is this one line:
=====
PING 194.14.91.12 (194.14.91.12): 56 data bytes
=====
nothing more. I have found that if I use the "route"-command when this
happens it displays the first two lines very quickly but the last one
showing the default gateway can take a very long time, but when it is
finally displayed then the network ability is back to normal. I can also
get it back to normal if I use the "ifconfig"-command, which take a very
long time to show the eth0 configuration/statistics. I'v tried it on two
different computers and with both Redhat 5.2 and 5.0 with the same
result. The two computer's hardware are:

pentium 75
32 Mb RAM
3C900 PCI NIC (using 3c59x.o module)
intel chipset

DX2-66
32 Mb RAM
3C509B ISA NIC (using 3c509.o module)
VIA chipset

I'v looked in /proc/interrupts and /proc/ioports, there are no
conflicts. If I write "route -C" I get:
==========
warning: /proc/net/route does not contain required field Mask
==========
What does that mean?

I think it seems to be a software problem but neither AOLserver nor
postgresql seems to be causing any trouble among the usenet-people. And
would it be possible for non-kernel-mode software to lock the entire
network ability i Linux?

This REALLY is annoying and if anyone can help me I would appreciate it.

(
Output from the "route"-command:

It looks to me like the subnet mask for eth0 is wrong. You have -

Yet with that address

24.0.174.72 and that subnet mask 255.255.255.0 the address that you are
on and the address of your nameserver [24.0.3.33] are on different
networks.

I suppose it could be that that is correct and the nameserver is on a
different subnet, in which case I think that your error is with the
router on 24.0.174.1 that doesn't know how to route to the nameserver's
network.

Alternately, you could swap that netmask to 255.255.0.0 and see what
happens??

What did you change to make it break?

Sorry for the cross-post, but I think this could be pretty cool:

Hi,
I know some people involved in a community radio station who are
investigating the possibility of allocating some bandwidth to data
transmission. : ))
The idea would be to allocate ~9kHz bandwidth in a 60-70kHz sub-band
using SCA (Sub-Carrier Additional). Data could then be received using an
SCA equipped FM radio, and perhaps a sound card. I think this idea is
great, and wonder if anybody has suggestions about how to configure
suitable networking interfaces.
I know there is a great deal of packet support in the kernel but
don't really know how applicable it is(?).
The goal would be to broadcast data, not just datagrams, so reliable
delivery should be available. I envisage the data server would be on the
internet and clients could provide feedback above IP. Ideally clients
would include windows machines, so the interfacing must be implementable
under that gagged and oppressive atmosphere.
Is it possible to implement a uni-directional multicast broadcast on
one interface under linux (maybe a SLIP connection to the Tx?), using a
different interface for feedback? Or would one need to write low-level
drivers for the broadcast (or even 'cat file > /dev/ttySX' for
datagrams?), and implement feedback at the application level over
tcp/ip?

    Thanks in advance!

If you are using a hub you have to use half duplex. Full duplex

I'm new to this SAMBA/Linux issue myself & here'e what got me up &
running;
In the etc/sam.conf file edit these key params to get you up & running

WORKGROUP = [YourWindowsWorkgroupName]

hosts allow = [first three subnet numbers of your Win IP numbers]
(e.g. 10.18.21)

encrypt passwords = yes

The above 3 params. properly configured "should" get you going. Oh,
Don't forget to setup a directory or two to share on the Samba box.
It's params are towards the bottom.

Also, Using encrypted passwords you will not only have to setup user
accounts on the Linus box BUT you will have to use the
smbpasswd command. You have to setup a samba password when using
encrypted password option. The smbpasswd command will create the
/etc/smbpasswd file.

Enjoy

Subject: Question: setting up address translation/IP masquerading across an internet
PPP link
Date: Wed, 12 May 1999 16:45:31 +0100

Hi,

I am currently running FreeBSD 3.1 on several machines, however I am also
about to install Redhat 6 on at least one, maybe two. I am most used to
FreeBSD, however if what I want to do is possible only in Linux and not
FBSD, I'd happily use that instead. I also have access to NT Server 4.

I currently operate a network connected to the internet via a reasonably
fast leased line. The network consists mostly of FreeBSD servers, with one
Windows NT Server 4 (SP4) machine.

I often work at home, dialling into the internet on a PPP connection using a
modem. Due to the location of my office and cost constraints, this is the
only way I can access my office network. It's not possible for me to just
dial into my network, I have to go through an ISP first.

I would like, if possible, to be able to appear to the outside world as if I
am on my local office network. I have a Class C IP address range, so I can
easily allocate myself an IP on my leased-line network, but then I need a
way of accessing that from my dial in PPP account.

So, say I dial in as useraa1.myisp.com. I want any outgoing connections to
appear to the outside world as dialup.mynetwork.com. Ideally, I would also
like to be able to map incoming connections to dialup.mynetwork.com through
to useraa1.myisp.com. I think I could probably do this with natd on
FreeBSD, not sure in Linux or NT.

But how do I get useraa1.myisp.com to route all its traffic through
dialup.mynetwork.com ? Is there a software package that will do it, or is
it possible to do it via the routing table somehow? Although, I don't think
routing tables could do it.. because to use address translation, a machine
on my network would need to be able to listen for connections from
useraa1.myisp.com, which would involve thinking it was a part of the
myisp.com network. Hum, maybe I've got it mixed up, but I can't see how it
would work.

The only other thing I can think of is PPTP. If I were to create a Virtual
Private Network between my dialup machine and my office network, would that
mean that my dialup machine could be allocated an IP on the office network?
Would outgoing connections now appear as dialup.mynetwork.com?

Another program I've seen is 'nos-tun' on FreeBSD, which creates 'a nos
style tunnel' between FreeBSD and a Cisco router. My main router on my
leased line is a Cisco 1601 (soon to be 2501).. but I don't relaly
understand the nos-tun program (the man page is quite brief), or whether it
would help me or not..

Ultimately what I want is a solution such that typing "telnet someplace.com"
from my local machine results in someplace.com getting a connection from
dialup.mynetwork.com, not useraa1.myisp.com. Similarly, it would be very
nice if typing "telnet dialup.mynetwork.com" would send the request through
to port 23 of useraa1.myisp.com.

I'm rather perplexed by all this.. any advice and suggestions would be most
welcome!

first: tr0: Initial interrupt: shared RAM located at 00DC2D4
repeated: tr0: Unrecoverable error: error code = 0011
consequently the ifconfig command gets stuck.

When I specify the irq=9 in /etc/conf.modules no errors appear but the
card still doesn't work.

When I try ifconfig tr0 172.16.150.22 netmask 255.255.255.0 up the
messages appear:
SIOCSIFADDR: No such device
SIOCSIFNETMASK: No such device

The part of conf.modules look like this:

alias tr0 ibmtr
options ibmtr io=0xa20 irq=9

Has anyone got this card working and how did he/she do it?

Thanx in advance,

Richard

Subject: DNS / WINS integration in Linux
Date: Wed, 12 May 1999 15:11:34 GMT

Hi,

I'm currently looking into what NT servers we can get rid of at work, to
be replaced by Linux boxes (yay!)

We have a WINS server here which unfortunately will have to stay;
however we're making use of a MS-DNS server that hooks into the WINS
service to resolve Windows machine names that DNS immediately doesn't
understand.

Is there any sort of WINS support under Linux? I'm not expecting
anything along the lines of pure DNS/WINS integration (although it'd be
nice!!) but if I can at least do WINS lookups from the Linux box it's a
start and I may be able to somehow kludge things.... :)

cheers,

pls. reply via email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] as well as posting
(proper newsfeed is next on the 'to do' list ;)

Jules

Subject: Please help ! modem !
Date: Tue, 11 May 1999 08:55:46 -0400

I have a dedicated dialup account to my internet provider. I keep the line
up by the use of a daemon that pings an address every few minutes. If the
ping fails the daemon runs my connect script. A few weeks ago I noticed that
my connection was down ! For some unknown reason the modem was not reacting
to the connect script. I did notice that on the modem the "OH" light was not
on but the "CD" and "TR" still were ! (When the modem receives a "SIGHUP" all
three lights should turn off.) And using "ifconfig" reports a connection
even thought there really isn't ! If I turned the modem off and back on the
 connect script will again work.

I am totally baffled by this because this setup
has been working perfectly for the last couple of years. And this does not
happen every time the connection is killed. (but when it does the only cure
is to turn the modem off and back on)

I've replaced the modem thinking that could be the problem; but it wasn't. :(

Here is the message from my "messages" file the very first time this
 happened. I should note that the "garbage" here has never appeared since;
only the "alarm" and "failed" messages kept appearing. Although during the
last few days not even those have appeared ! And the "Hangup (SIGHUP)" is
 not appearing either !
