ok, i think i know what's wrong. I had the same proble,. In the new 2.2
Kernels, they have this "autoroute" feature that adds a route for any
interface that is configured with an IP Address. The solution to this is to
not make any routes manually, let the kernel handle all the routing, I don't
know how to disable this but i know how to get rid of a route. Also, maybe
your default route is not in place, type the following
Remove routes
route del -net (Network or IP) netmask (Netmask) (Device)
replace all of the things in the brackets with your information.
Add default Route
route add default gw (Gateway)

The easiest thing is to put
/sbin/route add default ppp0
in /etc/ppp/ip-ip. This will make ppp0 the default route for the duration
of the ppp connection and you'll automatically get the eth0 default route
back after the connection terminates.

I've been running with ip masquarading for several months without any
problem. However, I do notice that I have problems accessing certain websites
- the main one being http://members.xoom.com and today I also notice
http://www.hp.com is also not working. If I go to the main linux box I can
access the site without any problem but accessing from one of the other local
machines just results in the site timing out....
Perhaps someone else could try it and confirm whether it is just a problem
specific to my setup?
Thanks,
Steve.

See the Serial and PPP HOWTO's and Plip mini HOWTO. Plip works much=20

NIS works fine but userid-mapping when mounting a NFS volume doesn't

nfsd reports "nis_lookup(root) RPC failure on NIS operation" every time

Subject: Utility to test network security
Date: Sat, 06 Feb 1999 18:29:00 GMT
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I am participating in a course about installing, arranging,
configuring a LAN with an Internet connection. One of the machines
(all PCs running SuSE 5.3 Linux 2.0.35) is going to act as a gateway
for all other computers in the LAN using firewall and masquerading
techniques. Software involved includes among others TCP Wrapper,
ipfwadm and TIS. The key point about all this is going to be security.
Sometime in about two weeks the teacher is going to test the network
setup. I would rather know beforehand where the security holes are in
order to correct them; bad results could even negatively affect my
professional future.
Now I am looking for a nice utility to analyse or "attack" or hack on
my LAN and on the LAN of our competitors (several groups of the class
are working in parallel doing this each with its own LAN segment). The
emphasis of the utility should lie on "testing", not setting, because
we are allowed only to make security settings per hand - using vi and
the commonly available commands. The connection to the Internet itself
is uncritical, since we have no access to the hosts really governing
this. By the way, we are simulating a WAN connection, so we use a
null-modem cable to connect the LAN gateway to the "Internet" (which
is another LAN passing us through) using PPP. All this sounds nice
and I am learning a lot, but I am afraid not enough.
Any recommendations?
Thanks in advance
Rod

Try this:

# For all traffic to be forwarded, masquerade it
ipchains -A forward -s $LOCAL_NET -j MASQ

I'm trying to get a pci nic with RealTek 8029 working
on my Gateway 486 PCI machine.
I have the ne2k-pci.o module and I've tried compiling it into
the kernel and loading it as a module. Neither work.
I get this screwy error : ' conf:5: unknown keyword "/sbin/modprobe" '
on boot up and when I try to run 'modprobe -a' or any other sort of
modprobe command.
The PCI file in /proc/ recognizes the card as:
Bus 0, device 3, function 0:
Ethernet controller: Realtek 8029 (rev0).
Medium devsel. IRQ 79
I/O at 0x0
And no, the IRQ is not a typo. :-)
So in debugging this problem, I've noticed that the PCI bus and drivers
appear to work correctly. My guess is the ethernet drivers are not or
the card is malfunctioning.
Has anyone had this problem before? What am I doing wrong?
(Is Linux really this difficult to set up?)
Thanks in advance,
Shawn

Why not get a cheap PC for linux and use the Amiga as an Amiga, after
all they're nice machines. My internet firewall / news server / imap4

Well the problem is that my provider has assigned me a range of IP addresses -
The local ppp0 i/p being 192.168.40 - and the complete I/P range being
192.168.0.40 through to 192.168.0.47. I am free to change the ppp0 i/p within
my range - but I understand setting it to 192.168.0.40 is a no-no?
If I issue the command : ipfwadm -F -p accept then everything works - Traffic
automatically routes to the specified machine, and I can tracrt out from a
Win95 client correctly.
Am I correct in saying than in using ipfwadm I'm still implementing some sort
of firewall? Or is this the correct way to have a RAW / transparent feed
to/from the net for the local machines?
One further point - I cannot ping 192.168.0.41 - either from the main linux
box or from any other machines on the network.

Well, the problem was on the permission of the kppprc file.
I don't know why, kppp insists on reading the root configuration.
I then setup the file and its directory to be readable by anybody.
It solved the problem.
The kppprc file is not emptied anymore and everything is fine now.

Ryan:
I think your expectations may be foiled by your cablemodem provider. I am connected
through GTE Americast cablemodem service and have found the following limitations:
1) Your contract for the service will probably explicitly prohibit sub nets.
2) Your provider probably won't provide a route back to the other computers on your
network - even if you have valid/legal IP addresses for them. The alternative
around
this is to set up one of your computers as a router and find a provider like the
ml.org
group mentioned above who will route to your primary computer.
3) After your cablemodem has been installed and initialized - The first computer you
start
with the IP address assigned by your provider will connect to the cablemodem and
will be
the only one the cablemodem will talk to until you powercyle the cablemodem. It
locks on
to the MAC address of the ethernet card.
I have had both Solaris and Linux up and running, but they require more skill than
Windows to
implement. If your primary objective for internet access is for WEB access with your
browser
from multiple computers - Best bet is to set up your primary computer with Solaris and
then
open a GUI based login from your Linux/Windows computers and run Netscape from there.
The
following script will work from another Solaris or Linux based computer:
#!/bin/csh
#
# $HOME/bin/r_login
# Initial coding 01/22/97 Jim Whitman
# Last Update: 03/26/98 JLW
#
#
# Begin MAIN
#
if ($#argv != 1) then
/usr/bin/echo "USEAGE: r_login [hostname]^G"
exit 0
endif
setenv ldisplay "`hostname`:0.0"
setenv myname "`whoami`"
/usr/openwin/bin/xhost +$1
/usr/bin/rsh "$1" /usr/dt/bin/dtterm -geometry 132x25+90+0 -display "$ldisplay" -title
"$1-$myname" -name "$1-$myname" -bg Sla
teGray -fg white -sb -sl 256 -ls &
Additionally - You need to have the same user account on both computers, an entry in
the users
.rhosts file for the remote computer, and share the home directory.
To support this functionality from Windows you will need a third party X11 package for
Windows.

If the virus is one of the spectacularly nasty ones that go looking
for disk partitions to corrupt at the hardware level, then when it is
triggered under DOS or Win it will hit your Linux file partitions, too.

route add -net 0.0.0.0 netmask 128.0.0.0 dev ppp0

If their server is setup to allow it, then it _should_ be possible. I
would not be comfortable with putting my connection at the whim of an ISP
though. Especially if I need it for work.

California Prime Line (http://www.cpl.net/) offers a fixed IP address with
ADSL accounts.
