Subject: ppp chat problem logged
Date: Wed, 12 May 1999 12:43:43 -0700

new to linux using redhat 5.2 k2.0.36 on a i486
I'm working my way through ppp setup and having some problems. When I launch
/sbin/ifup ppp0 there is a problem with the chat script (see below). Can
anyone detect where the problem is?

note: "telenumber" was inserted where my dail up number was revealed in the
log. I connect to earthlink.net,
I understand that they use PAP and I do have that configured (perhaps
incorrectly?) as I see no reference to the username or password in the log.
I use an intel 144/144e modem (external) this is quite old. There are 3
succesive attempts to connect in the script below, I include them because
the 2nd attempt has 1 line different from the first attempt i.e. "May 12
11:56:16 lisa kernel: PPP: ppp line discipline successfully unregistered"
perhaps it provides clue.

Thanks, Donnell

Subject: Re: YPBINDPROC_DOMAIN: No bound server for domain
Date: Wed, 12 May 1999 22:13:25 +0200

As you guessed this is a NIS error message. This means that there is no NIS
server in the domainname you specified on the client. Try to run
"domainname" on your NIS server and on your client. If they both return the
same name, then it should be good. If one of the two doesn't answer anything
then you would have to run "domainname ###" where ### is your NIS domain
name. What told the HOWTO is that it is clearer to have a NIS domain name
different from the "dns" domain name (for example respectively "nisdom" and
"mysite.com"). But it doesn't really matter.

To have an available server, you would have then to run "make" in the
/var/yp directory, but before edit the Makefile and comment/uncomment what
you want in the "all:" section. I think you should configure
/etc/ypserv.conf and /etc/yp.conf

Also check that your server is working : there should be a "ypserv" process.

Please help.

We are needing to implement over-the-network kickstart
installations using a Linux dhcp and nfs server.

o Setting up the NFS server install host is no problem.

o Writing the ks.cfg file is no prob ...... can currently
  do kickstart installs from cdrom

o Setting up the dhcp server is (prob). We have not found
clear information regarding Linux dhcp implementation.

o Please share your experience and/or working config file
examples and/or clear documentation, etc with us

Does anyone know where i should look or what i should put where to stop the

setup the pppd and ip masquerading as per the howto's.. i'm sure its this
because if i set my win98 pc to poll my mail box it keeps the line up.

Not sure what you mean by HTTP streaming? The RealAudio client on your
system buffers data coming from the Server, and starts "playing" while
the
rest of the data is coming (assuming that the bandwith it saw will allow
it to
download the rest while you are listening).

You may want to try PHP for scripting, performance is great as an
Apache Module and integrates well with PHP. See http://www.php.net/,
I also have some live demos of php/mysql at
http://www.thebook-demo.com/php

We have done a few installs. I would backup everything. If you
plan on doing an "upgrade" you should plan for the first and anticipate
the
entire disk may need to be reformatted.

If you are going to have common stuff in a common directory, you may
need to edit the suexec.c code to allow special directorys. The code is
fairly
easy to read.

The filesystem itself. The inode which stores the name of the file /dev/modem, also
stores a

I can't tell you much about what would have happened, but you should
know that tar itself doesn't compress files, it only archives them.
If you use a z switch it will activate a zip program to compress them.

Hi !

Simply use kernel configuration to create entries in /etc/conf.modules, kind of
"eth0 ne" and "eth1 3c59x" and "options ne io=0x240 irq=9", can't remember exact
syntax but I May give it later.
It should work.

Subject: Calling on Los Angeles Area Linux Users
Date: 12 May 1999 21:11:04 GMT

Greetings!

I'll be vacationing down there sometime in the next month and I was
wondering if someone could recommend some competitively pricing computer
stores in the area, particularly for cheap NICs (PCI, 10/100base T) and
hubs (4port is good enough for me, but also 10/100) to be used with a
Linux router and Linux clients (one windows machine too, actually)?

I'm using a 3Com 905 TX right now and it's working great, but I plan to
setup a network in my house and I'll be needing more NICs and I understand
DEC(?) NICs are great with Linux, but unfortunately, nobody around here
carries them.

I also understand that if planning to use NICs which use the tulip
drivers, I must be careful in choosing the chipset model as some are
mislabelled as carrying the chipset supported by the tulip driver when in
fact they're not? Can someone please expand on that for me?

All in all, I'd greatly appreciate it if someone could point me to some
competitive stores to fulfill my goals in the L.A. area as the only stores
I know down there are Circuit City and CompUSA. Thank you very much in
advance!

Steve

The cause of the failure is that chat is expecting OK but doesn't get it.
There's no OK response generated by the modem at this point since after
the CONNECT it's talking to the ISP hardware, not chat.

Eliminate all chat expect/send scripting after the CONNECT '' expect/send.
It would be a good idea to use CONNECT '\d\c' instead since this form
eliminates a carriage return that is otherwise sent and can confuse some
ISPs. "man chat" will tell you what \d and \c mean.

Hi, I am tring to get a guest usable printer working on a Samba server on Linux with a
Windows NT as a client. The Linux machine will come up on the NT machine while
browsing the network, but I cannot find the printer to add to the NT machine.

This is what smb.conf looks like:
      1 [global]
      2 log file = /var/log/samba-log.%m
      3 lock directory = /var/lock/samba
      4 share modes = yes
      5
      6 [homes]
      7 comment = Home Directories
      8 browseable = yes
      9 read only = no
     10 create mode = 0750
     11
     12 [tmp]
13 comment = Temporary file space
     14 path = /tmp
     15 read only = no
     16 public = yes
     17
     18 [printers]
     19 path = /usr/spool/lp1
     20 writable = no
     21 public = yes
     22 guest ok = yes
     23 printable = yes

This is what the log file looks like each time the server is started:

     15 [1999/05/12 13:33:34, 1] smbd/files.c:file_init(219)
16 file_init: Information only: requested 10000 open files, 246 are available.
     17 [1999/05/12 13:33:34, 0] smbd/server.c:main(669)
18 standard input is not a socket, assuming -D option

I'd appreciate any help in getting the NT machine to see the Linux printer, thanks.
