No I have plenty of disk space and deleting the core file was the first thing I tried
to no avail. One thing that semi-worked was setting the coredumpsize to zero however,
this is not a good solution for me as I sometimes need to see the core file.

To update pump (having downloaded new pump version from redhat updates),
type the following:

rpm -Uvh pump-[whatever version].rpm

The "U" means update. The "v" means verbose (show what's going on); the
"h" means show little hash marks as a progress metter. "rpm -Uvh" is the
basic command for upgrading packages on a redhat box.

Do a network restart by typing "/etc/rc.d/init.d/network restart"

Then type "/sbin/ifconfig" to spit out the info on your NICs. Look for
inet address - if you have an ip address, then pump did the right thing
and got your IP address. Pump is a REPLACEMENT for the older dhcp client
on the 5.2.

Type less "/etc/resolv" to see if pump put the DNS addresses in that file.

Hope this helps

I don't want to do this but if no choice I will have to - write a
program that would keep on sending some junk packets periodically every
few minutes [let's say 30 min] [ get http://something > /dev/null]

Please suggest a better approach.

It's probable that some of the ISP servers are set up for compression
and that others aren't. Since this is a crapshoot for you, you're
probably better off disabling compression entirely and using the modem
compression. Also, when you say 'deflate 11,0' you're saying 'compress
to me but don't compress anything I send' which might not be what you
want and which might not be well supported at the other end.

Also, I find that when you do have software compression at both
ends, the connection is faster if you also disable modem compression at
your end (so that the modems don't also try to compress the
incompressible).

The server on my LAN is used as a gateway to the Internet. Is it
possible to measure how much CPU time is consumed by the traffic on a
given Ethernet device?

Since the net traffic is not associated with a single process, top
doesn't tell me anything. I can view /proc/interrupts to see the
interrupt count for each device or ifconfig to see the packet counts,
but that doesn't tell me how much of a burden the CPU is running
under.

Thank you.

Hi I am having problems gettting SGI IRIX hosts to mount nfs files from

(but then again so did a lot of things !!).

Other Linux boxes can mount the files fine. I have a custom 2.2.5 kernel

Any help appreciated.

Use news for the stuff you want to share, and use IMAP for reading
mail. Beyond that, what's the advantage of a consolidated mail

I am new to Linux, and I am trying to set it up to work with my cable modem.
I am using SuSE 6.1. When I boot the machine up, it goes thriugh the regular
start up processes, then it gives me an error something like this:
setting up routing etc/route.conf
error while executing /sbin/route add default gw <ip address>
SIOCADDRT:Network is unreachableSetting up routing
Well, I've checked the /etc/route.conf and the correct IP is there.. Does
anyone have any ideas of what I am doing wrong? I know the IP and subnet
mask work, I've used them with Win 98 on the same machine.

Okay.. another samba question. I'm trying to get my company's software to
work on Linux. I work at Citadel and we make a variety of networking
products that sit on an NT or Novell server. However, our products pull
down lists of usernames from the server. This doesn't seem to work with a
Linuxbox running samba. I get a blank list of users. Is this something
samba just hasn't implimented or is it something that I need to change so
that samba can provide a list of users on that server? I have tried using
a seperate smbpasswd file but that doesn't help either.

Subject: Howto check if Port # is block by ISP?
Date: Fri, 06 Aug 1999 12:37:25 -0400

Hi,

I am connected to the Internet through a local ISP: NetZero.net. I can
surf the Internet with NetScape 4.6.1. I can even send e-mail to anyone
through the ISP's stmp server. However, when I tried to setup my other
e-mail account from a third party e-mail provider, i.e. mailandnews.com,
I could not send out the e-mail and the sendmail responded with "Network
Unreachable". Having said that, I did the following to test if the ISP
has blocked the smtp port:

1. "telnet mailandnews.com 25" produces the following error message:

   telnet mailandnews.com 25
   Trying 199.29.68.160...
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Network is unreachable

2. "telnet mailandnews.com 23" produces the following error message:

   telnet mailandnews.com 23
   Trying 199.29.68.160...
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused

So, it looks me that the ISP has blocked the smtp port. Can anyone
please confirm that what I have done above is correct? Also, is there a
way to by pass the blockage?

I certainly appreciate if you could kindly respond through e-mail.
Thanks.

To install the RPM go to an xterm window and find where you saved it. Type
rpm -Uvh and the name of the
rpm file you downloaded to install the update.

As for setting up DHCP go to the mini DHCP HOWTO, located in the
/usr/doc/HOWTO/mini directory.

Gonzo,
This isn't a very helpfull reply to a person who we should be trying to
help out here.. Yes the post is something probably answered in the how-tos
but that isn't always the case and many of the how-tos are very confusing.

Vasanth (original poster),
Samba is definatly the package you need to share files between windows and
Linux. I assume this is what you want when reffering to them "talking"
otherwise you might consider sitting there pinging each other to be
talking.. who knows.
Xwindows can be a pain to setup for the first time. it is still a pain
for me to get it setup in the refreshrate, color scheme, and resolution I
want. However, most people that run Linux, run Xwindows.. it is a given.
If you could provide some specific information on what is happening, maybe
we could help more.
