You could duplicate your mail with procmail to a different folder and then
read it over telnet.

Subject: FWTK linux firewalling: help needed
Date: 10 May 1999 12:14:24 GMT
Hi all linux-thinking guys.
I recently set-up a firewall machine to give Internet access to my private
LAN.
Here is the configuration:
PC 486-66 16MB (will become P200)
Dual homed (2 x 3Com 3C509)
Linux RH 5.0.37
FWTK 2.0 (TIS)
========>Internet========>Firewall==========>| Private LAN |
I installed ftp proxy (ftp-gw): it works fine
then I installed telnet proxy (tn-gw): it works fine
then I installed http proxy (http-gw): it works fine.
But I can't have my internet mail forwarded to/from the mail server
(Exchange 5.0), which is inside the private LAN.
The firewall machine itself is able to send messages to the mail server
inside the LAN, but is not able to forward messages incoming to port 25.
This is the SMTP section of my /etc/netperm-table file:
smap, smapd: userid 6
smap, smapd: directory /var/spool/smap
smapd: executable /usr/local/etc/smapd
smapd: sendmail /usr/sbin/sendmail
smap: timeout 3600
Did I miss something?
I made no change to sendmail's default configuration. Perhaps some routing
informations are needed.
I know some people have the same configuration: could you send me the
configuration (i.e.: nameservers, def gateways, sendmail.cf, ...) of your
working firewall system?
All contributions VERY welcome.

Hi.
I've configured RH 5.1 to connect to a WinNT Server with DHCP.
All works fine, I can use netscape for Linux to navigate over my NT Web
server, I can ping to the server and all machines in the LAN if I use the
IP adress .
But I can't ping using the name, I were unable to configure Linux to use my
WinNT DNS.
How can I do this...?
Thanks.

Thanks, all, for the help. Sucks that I have to deal with all
this. I've finally got my system doing exactly what I wanted,
I haven't had to reboot in weeks. Oh well...I guess this is how
a person learns this stuff. In the interim, I'll use ALL:ALL in
my hosts.deny until I learn about this ssh stuff. I'd rather
not use this, I'm going to look in to a more secure ftpd first
and just deny all access to telnetd.
I'm pretty sure the culprit hacked ftpd, because I had some
long ass recursed directories in my Incoming area.
Oh well...once again: thanks (except for that knob who couldn't
forgive my pid/process misnomer - get over yourself Nelson).

1) Make sure that you have autofs (not amd) installed and that it is
configured to start when you reboot.
2) Make sure that your NIS server is serving up an auto.master
map. Solaris uses the name auto_master, so make a duplicate map. (I
could have the names backwards, but still, make sure that it's serving
both).
Autofs will automatically query the NIS map on startup. That's all I
had to do.

Yes.
[root@biskit /root]# /etc/rc.d/init.d/autofs start
Starting automounter:
[root@biskit /root]#
is what it does when I start it. Seems like it should print
something out when it starts?

Yes.
[root@biskit /root]# ypcat -k auto.master
/home/morgan -rw oligo:/home/morgan
/home/doofus -rw oligo:/home/doofus
[root@biskit /root]#
Is this the correct format?

That's what everyone else is telling me! autofs is compiled into
all the kernels I am trying to get this working on. Mounting
the directories by hand also works when autofs is off(and hasn't
siezed control of /home) The automounting works like a dream on
solaris, but it's hell on aix and linux. Any help is greatly
appreciated!

problem is, although the cardmgr works fine and detects the netcard
(although it starts pcmcia services after failing to bring up eth0), the
network initilization "/etc/rc.d/init.d/network start" fails to bring up

The RSA patent is more restrictive than that. The license on the RSAREF
library, for example, doesn't allow sale of either applications _or_
services based on RSAREF applications. So, RedHat can't include it on a
CD, you can't use it as a contractor to connect to your clients, etc.

Certainly not. I don't make copies of copyright videotapes; why should
I get freaked out?
Look, the entire GPL, and most other free licenses as well, are based on
the these laws. It's simply hypocritical to ignore the legal
implications of the software you're using on the one hand, and rely on
them on the other.

I'm trying to point out you're being unclear in your advice. When you
say "ssh" most people will go get the latest version. If you're going
to evangelize the use of ssh, you should be careful to advise them that
ssh2 is very likely illegal for them to use, and that they should use
ssh1.

incluso lo hemos intentado siguiendo un articulo de Solo Linux, que lo

Look in /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf for a ServerName entry; this should
be your system's hostname. While you're at it, you might as well go
through the rest of this file and set it up as appropriate.

The client packages use DNS to connect to the Exchange server. Unlike
*most* Microsoft servics and apps, which preferentially use NetBIOS
over TCP/IP. Usually the name resolution order is managed by the
redirector, but in this case the app uses DNS. When the client app
(Outlook) can't reach the defined DNS server, you get this error.

Subject: Problems with smbmount
Date: Wed, 12 May 1999 13:15:57 GMT
Hi:
Brief overview of my situation
==============================
I work on a PC running Windows NT 4.0. I run a telnet session to a LINUX
machine running RedHat 5.1. I would like to access my PC's local CDROM
drive from the LINUX box. For this, I run smbmount from my telnet
session to mount the CDROM drive using a command like:
smbmount //linuxbox/cdrom /mnt/samba -C -U mylinuxid -c
linuxhostname -D domainname -d 555 -f 555
The problem
===========
The mount works fine. But, all the files and directories under
/mnt/cdrom have no permissions whatsoever. On the NT4.0 side, I have
"shared" my CDROM drive with "Full Control" permissions to "Everyone". I
cannot do a 'chmod 555 /mnt/samba'. I am logged on to LINUX as 'root'.
Does that matter?
In summary, can any of you Samba gurus out there help me access my PC's
CDROM drive from a LINUX box?
It would help a lot if you would please cc: your responses to me at

Thanx in advance,

Hi Clifford,
thanks a lot for helping! Now, ip-forewarding is compiled in and turned on.
The network-routes I set up
in /etc/route.conf (SuSE 6.0 = 2.0.36) look like this:
192.168.4.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 eth1
192.168.4.129 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.255 Io

default 192.168.3.101
Now, it doesn't work. A Ping from Net 192.168.4.0 is not replied from
192.168.3.0. Of course, pinging from the Gatewaybox into both lans work.
Notice, that the Defaultgateway 192.168.3.101 is an Internet-gateway.
Thanks again for any help,

Hi!
Since I recompiled my 2.2.5 kernel Samba doesn't work properly...
I can still connect to the Samba services etc but Samba cannot announce
itself as domain controller and master browser... The log file says:
"udp_sendto 192.168.1.255: operation not permitted" or something similar...
That means the UDP protocol refuses to broadcast into my local network to
find other samba browsers... This means that samba's master election doesn't
work...
What could have went wrong? Which kernel options do I have to take care of
to make broadcasting working again?
Or could this be related to a config problem with samba?
