I know this sounds really silly, but which syslog? I looked in
/var/log/messages and couldn't see anything in there. A grep for sk_buff
of everything in /var/log doesn't find anything... is there somewhere
else I should be checking? Sorry to be so ignorant...

Madge has just released linux drivers for their non "true blue" TR cards
on their web site.
- I'm using a PCMCIA Madge card on a RH6.0/Dell Latitude and it works.
Madge have PCI cards so Linux TR hits the PCI bus at last?
I don't like the ibmtr driver that has been available until now(which may
work with certain 100% IBM TR compatible cards)
- it can hang the system with a cable error: the madge driver doesn't.
I don't know if IBM will sudenly release more drivers (also for PCI)
Olicom also have drivers: but the guy who was maintaining them left the
company(?)
- it is also an installation that patches the kernal source which may mean
it ill not work with RH60

Hello,
I have managed to export a directory from a server to a client via NFS,
but only after exporting the whole root directory.
In other words :
-if I export only '/' it works
-if I export only '/mydirectory' it does not works (it says 'not
authorized' or something like that) when I try to mount it
-if I export both, both can be mounted.
But I do not want the client to access the server's root directory (even
if he has to be root) ! Can someone help me ? Thanks a lot.

I configured the modem using the control panel but now I must configure all

Subject: God of Networking (or demon) needed to help!
Date: Mon, 17 May 1999 08:42:29 GMT
I'm having a weird problem with my home computer's networking.
Networking just freezes suddenly; a full halt. I get no kernel messages
re: it. To bring the connection back up, I have to bring the interface
down, bring it back up, and reroute. Then, the network will work for
another two to twenty minutes or so, then freeze again. Wiping the
routing table & re-entering the routes won't fix the problem.
My computer is a 486/66 running Debian linux, kernel 2.0.36. My
networking setup is a cable-modem connected to an isa smc-etherEZ 10bT
ethernet card.
I have run tcpdump a few times while the network is functioning, and
have three logs that begin with normal network functionality, and stop
at the moment networking became non-responsive. If these would be
helpful in diagnosing this problem, they are:
http://members.home.net/elaura/dump1.txt
http://members.home.net/elaura/dump2.txt
http://members.home.net/elaura/dump3.txt
I have used this computer with all the same hardware like this for
weeks, and networking worked just fine, the computer running 24/7, never
needing resetting. I'm not sure if this condition is a result of
something I may have changed, or something that has changed in my
provider's network.
That's as much info as I can think of! Thank you thank you thank you in
advance to all replies. :)

When you say "live" what does this mean?
You have one external linux box that sits on both a reserved network
which houses your computers, and on the real network passing data back
and forth for the internal machines, right?
If you have internal machines, it should not be an issue to "name"
them, as they all live behind your masq box anyhow. It should not
matter to anyone else what this internal box calls itself.
If you want to use "galaxy" as a server, then it might be best to put
it outside on the real network so it can handle blind incoming data
connections. That or set up tcp redirects on the main
"maindomain.com" machine which passes traffic onto the reserved
network.

I have installed RedHat5.2 on a linux box as client and the DNS is
installed on SUN server. I have made necessary changes in /etc/host
and /etc/resolv.conf files to make it to work as client for SUN. I am
not sure what I am missing which would not allow me to log as a user on
the linux workstation. To make it more clear I have mounted the remote
disk which has my home directory and also /home which links to my home

Also would be of great help if you could suggest as to how ypbind starts

Thanks in anticipation and waiting for your valued suggestion.

Hallo,
I've small LAN with one linux PC acting as Firewall.
I have this problem:
When client asks for http request, the linux calls (dial-on-demand) on
internet. But it takes over 60 sec to connect. The client says, that the
server not exist - I think, the DNS problem. I have DNS for my
LAN on linx box and when it gets the request for IP from outside of my
LAN, it forwards the request to Internet server. Where can I set up
the time, so the clients (MS Explorer and MAC with Netscape) will wait
for the IP from DNS
over 60 sec ? (some UDP timeout in IP Masq rules or diald rules?)
Or must I tune the clients? And where?
Thanx for your help.
Roman.

recent versions of xterm provide better support (e.g., NumLock) for the
keypad -
The XFree86 3.3.3.1 xterm supports ANSI color and VT220 emulation
There's an faq at

(I'd compile it, set the Sun/PC keyboard toggle on -- to vt220 mode --

IF the routers/gateways connecting the 2 networks are the DEFAULT routes for
each networks, then only the gateway needs to have the route to the other
network. However, if this is not the default gateway, then you'll need a
route to the other network on every hosts (or other router) that needs to
access it. So if the gateway to the other network and the gateway to the
internet are the same system, only that system needs to know the route to
the other network.
I notice you are using the 192.168.x.y as a /16 (classs B) network (netmask
of 255.255.0.0). This probably will work but the 192.168.x.y are really
assigned as private /24 (class C) networks (netmask of 255.255.255.0).
There is a /16 (class B) 172.16.0.0/255.255.0.0 and a /8 (class A)
10.0.0.0/255.0.0.0 private networks defined as well.
