If you hadnt compiled it yourself, but saved yourself the trouble and just
installed the dhcpd rpm, it would automatically start at system boot.Im not up
to speed on RH6, but assuming it works the same on RH5.2, the correct way is:
write a script in /etc/rc.d/init.d that starts dhcpd in the background. Then
create a link from /etc/rc.d/rc<runlevel>.d to that script, with the link being
called S<somenumber>dhcpd.
Of course, you can just trace back everything that was started in /etc/inittab
and insert the script anyplace you find suitable.

Since you have not stated it I assume that you are using the defauly out the
box sendmail as you mail server. Does the linux server not respond to the
win95 mail client with a " we do not relay" or some such error. This just
means unless you are connected to linux locally , sendmail will not forward
your mail to your ISP. Just add the line
192.168. ( or whatever subnet you are using - nb: don't forget the cr at
eol)
to /etc/mail/ip_allow
This will allow all non-local clients with ip addresses 192.168.*.* to use
sendmail as an smtp-router
ps: The reason your win95 clients can receive e-mail is because they are
using the pppd daemon , not the sendmail server.

You have to define an access list to force the request to go to the
parent proxy. See the FAQ at http://squid.nlanr.net/Squid

As far as I know, tftpd is started from /etc/inetd.conf. Uncomment it
there. Please note however that tftpd has serious security implications
- if started wrong, your system has no security left at all. So read the
man page before you go ahead.

Nope.. You will have to install TCP/IP on your NT boxes.. Netbeui isn't
supported under Linux. IPX is, but I don't believe you can share files
over IPX on Linux.

Its indeed poorly documented, but you should set
NISDOMAIN=mydomainsomething in /etc/sysconfig/network. If you trace back
the /etc/rc.d/init.d/yp* files you can see the spot where they actually
access it. Search for "domainname". (grep domainname /etc/rc.d/init.d/*)

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I am trying to get samba to run behind a firewall. Can
anybody tell me
which ports (tcp/udp) samba uses so i can pass the correct
ports through
the firewall? I have heard that it uses tcp/udp 137-139. I
have ip masquerading on, therefore it shows up in network
neighborhood on the pc network. But when i connect to the
samba server through the firewall with just
these ports open, it says it cannot be found. I am assuming
it must use other ports????....
Thanks!

This server will be used in our office.
My config as follows :
1. a standard PC , Intel PII 266, 128M ram, IDE 8.4G HD, MGA Display
card.
4. 3com network card (I don't remeber the model no., I think it is
3c509c)
2. 128K Lease Line with Router (supply by my ISP)
3. Linux Red Hat 6.0
The main problem is we have two domain (www.jjec.com.hk and
www.narvent.com), but I only have 1 machine, how can this machine handle
two IP address. and also the email problem. i mean that when people send
the email to [EMAIL PROTECTED], this server can deliver the mail to mary

I have brought three books about the linux system. but i still don't
know how to config this server. of course, i have tried many time to

Well, it can be really easy if your Linux Distribution sets it up for you,
or it can be a living nightmare if you try to download, compile, and setup
yourself. Or it can be anywhere in between.
Once you do get it working, I recommend downloading a nifty new program
called "LinNeighborhood" which is like "Network Neighborhood" under
Windows, only it is a GTK program for Linux!

This is my /etc/ppp/options file (two lines):
name 'NTDOMAIN\\username'
remotename *
This is my /etc/chap-secrets file (one line):
DOMAIN\\username * password
(of course I am not trying to do callback. But those lines above
should work for you. NTDOMAIN = your NT domain (all caps), username =
your NT username, password = your NT password. Use * for the NT server
name. Don't use quotes in chap-secrets. Don't bother with any
compression options, NT won't support them.)

Does anyone know if you can, using a proper matching transformer or
balun, use one UTP as a substitue for 10Base2 coax? I've seen them
used, but never for Ethernet. I have an application (around my home)
where I have UTP run, but need a point-to-point topology such as with
10Base2. The only other alternatives I can think of are to have a hub
with uplink at every location, or use a Farralon EtherWave. Both of
these options are cost prohibative.

Subject: PPP route error
Date: Mon, 17 May 1999 16:25:50 +0100
PPPD reports that it won't override default for ppp0. The FAQ reckons this
is because of a Slackware "enhancement" but I'm using SuSE 6.1 (ppp used to
work ok with slackware some years ago). I've hunted around in the rc2.d
files but can't find anything setting a route to, say, a non-existent
ethernet card. I've naturally done what seems to be the right thing with
rc.config and all (well, maybe most!) other files. What happens is that,
say, telnet to remote host reports connection, then no feedback. ping to
any but localhost fails. ifconfig shows ppp running, but no default entry
in route table.
Now stuck - all help much appreciated.

I have the same card, and as far as I know it should be supported by the
IBM TokenRing driver. AsI recall, this card has several options (it can
emulate a IBM card or something). I do recall some
