If booting first from C:, then A:, what would happen if the "hacker"
disconnected the power
plug from the hard drive, booted from floppy, then replaced the plug on the
hard drive.

This is related to the post :
Diablo UPD packet problems behind IP Masquerading

I figured out from the documentation everyone so nicely sent me (especially
the updated ip-masquerading HOWTO) how to forward all other packets to a
specific machine.
Unfortunately, this requires me to rebuild the kernel with ipautofw on.
I perform a make config, and the .config file looks correct, but when I do a
`make dep; make clean; make boot`, I get the following error:

> make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-2.0.36/arch/i386/boot'
>
 gcc -D__KERNEL__ -I/usr/src/linux-2.0.36/include -E -D__ELF__ -traditional

> make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-2.0.36/arch/i386/boot'
> make: *** [boot] Error 2

I did a find on "as86" and nothing turned up.
I also looked through the the Makefile in /usr/src/linux and did not find
the string as86.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If I remember properly, Netbeui is a primarily Windows used protocol. I
don't believe Linux supports Netbeui. But Microsoft is starting to
push TCP/IP as the default protocol anyways, so it might be in your
best intrests to switch to it now. If your using NT Server, it should
be rather easy to support, or even switch to TCP/IP without creating
major network disruption.

Yes, it's very much an issue. IMHO, *NOBODY* should be running ssh2.
First off, it's not 100% backwards compatible with ssh1. Secondly, it
doesn't have as many features as ssh1. Lastly, the license is so
restrictive as to make anything but "play" use illegal.

ssh2 is _not_ the "latest" release of ssh1 -- it is a completely
different product, and one that most sysadmins I know consider to be
crap.

"ssh" means "ssh1".

My guess is in your Samba configuration. By default it only sends to
the immediate subnet. Outside your firewall must be another subnet?
(I've not configured Samba on multiple subnets, so let us know how you

In your /etc/ppp/options file (or wherever you stick your pppd options),
use the 'persist' and 'holdoff' options. I have mine set up to redial
every 30 seconds upon failure, so my /etc/ppp/options file includes:

persist
holdoff 30

Hi.

I cannot establish a PPP connection to my ISP when my pppd script
,'ppp-on', which calls a chat script, 'ppp-on-dialer', is scheduled to
run under cron. The following messages are logged to
/var/log/messages:

cron[1569]: (root) CMD (/usr/local/bin/ppp-on)
pppd[1570]: pppd 2.2.0 started by root, uid 0
pppd[1570]: Connect script failed
pppd[1570]: Exit

My scripts are exact copies of the examples supplied with the pppd
2.2.0 documentation (Caldera 1.3) with only the telephone number and
account details changed. When run from the command line the scripts
work perfectly, every time. But, under cron they fail, every time.

Is there something special about running jobs under cron, or exporting
shell variables between scripts under cron?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have not included my scripts as they are very standard, but will do
so if required.

Make sure you have a proper null modem cable;

             X
TXD--------/ \--------TXD

     | |

The screen of the cable should be connected (soldered) to the connector

Have a look at the leased line mini howto and skip the modem part;

You'd better go into /etc/ppp/options (or whatever options file you

to it. Much cleaner. Read PPP-HOWTO under /usr/doc.

I successfully installed RH 6.0 Intel (Kernel 2.2.5-15) and have a strange problem
related to the one below:

I can successfully establish a PPP connection through ttyS0 to my Ricochet wireless
modem. KPPP connects and gets an IP address. I can then ping, traceroute, and do
DNS lookups without any problems. The output from netstat looks fine.

However, if I try www, ftp, or other TCP based services, I receive no responses to
the packets that are sent out. I have verified with tcpdump that I am indeed
sending packets out ppp0 but am not receiving the replies, or at least if I am,
Linux is unaware of it! If I use Lynx, Netscape, or other client software the
response is always the same... DNS succeeds, the remote host is contacted but then
it hangs at 'waiting for reply'.

I have aliased as indicated below, thinking that those error messages were the
cause of my problems. After doing so, the error messages went away, but the problem
still occurs.

Any advice/suggestions would be appreciated.

Regards,
Randall.

I was of the opinion that this card was either 100% compatible with the
4/16 or had a compatible mode. There is a 3Com card which is compatible,
but I would have to go to tape backups to find the number at this late

I assume you have tried the recent TR driver (ibmtr) without luck. It
was deeply broken for a long time, and now works but seems to only use
half the shared memory, or a quarter if it's double buffered. In any
case it works:

(If you telnet, ttyp? must be included; if you use a terminal, ttyS?
must be. Then, if you are on the console, console must be in.) Another
