Sorry, should have specified more info. I have a DHCP linkup to sympatico
ADSL. I can telnet into my linux machine from off-site no problem. I cannot
ftp in, but I know little of the ftp server capabilities of linux. I typed
in ftpd and was told that it didn't exist. I keep running into little
networking glitches and would be MOST grateful if you could help me get rid
of them:
1. When I login as root, I can open netscape and it loads a page from the
hard drive (file:/index.html for instance). When I log in as a normal user,
it tells me it can't find any files that I try to load from the hard drive.
I can still get stuff off the web though.
2. Since installing the ethernet card, LinuxConfig insists that it has to
make changes to the way Lilo boots my system. I tell it to do so and it says
"an error has occurred while making the changes, would you like to view the
log?" I say yes, and it shows at what time it tried to make changes. Then I
just tell it to quit. Happens every time I run LinuxConfig.
My IP address is dynamically assigned but it is static as long as the ADSL
modem doesn't lose power. (So far a week or so with the same address). I
entered my host name and ip address into the etc/host file because I was
always being told upon bootup that Gnome could not find my machine on the
internet, and it suggested that I add my address to that file. (It never
seemed to affect my network performance or ability to access the net, but
the message was annoying so I did as it suggested. I'll probably have to
change it when my ip address changes).
I'm pretty much a longtime windows and dos expert, but networking is
relatively new to me, and Linux is of course new. Thanks for any help you
can give..... sorry bout the long message.
other info, likely unrelated: my isp can dynamically assign 2 ip addresses,
so my adsl modem connects to a 10mbs hub, which then connects to both my
Win98/Linux dual boot machine and my room-mate's Win98 machine. We both have
slightly different ip addresses assigned, of course.

Theres a totally obvious way to get ISP's DNS servers.
Just do a whois at Internic for their domain name. This lists their details
including all the main DNS servers that their domain is listed on. Id say
theres a 99.9% chance that these DNS servers are their ISP's DNS servers.
I hope this helps.
I cannot tell you how to do a whois under anything except Linux however as I
never even used Telnet to contact Internic.

You need ipchains to do that... read the how-to's these should cover what
you need to do step-by-step.
Try this one for starters :
http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/HOWTO/mini/IP-Masquerade.html
Or check out : http://www.linux.org/help/index.html
Else : http://www.redhat.com/mirrors/LDP/LDP/LG/issue43/silva.ip_masq.html
Or : http://www.redhat.com/mirrors/LDP/HOWTO/IPCHAINS-HOWTO.html#toc7
Have fun, it's a great feature...

I loaded RH 6.0 on a P100 box w/ a D-Link 10bT PCI card, then shut it
sown a few days later and switched to a Hawking PN102TX 10/100 PCI card.
I went into Net Configurator and deleted the old interface
192.168.1.254, then added a new at the same IP address. Somehow in the
process I deleted my Loopback(127.0.0.1) also. Figured I could just add
it back in, but 'ifconfig' now shows my Local loopback(127.0.0.1) w/o
any Broadcast address. I remember it having one before, what do I do?
Please tell me the step by step commands that I need to use because I am
woefully clueless. Next, I need to know how to load the drivers for the
new NIC card. It came w/ a disk w/ drivers and two scenarios; one ready
to go driver file not guaranteed to work on all distributions, the other
option is to copy the file, compile it, etc. How do I install the ready
to go driver and can I remove it if it does not work? What is the
command for deleting a file?.

Subject: Client Win98 --> Server RedHat 5.2 problems
Date: Tue, 10 Aug 1999 21:36:36 -0700
Hi,
Can someone answer two questions please :
1. I am trying to connect Win98 (client) box and RedHat 5.2 (server)
through Ethernet crossed cable (no hub).
I know that I have to make the file Hosts under Win98 with IP
addresses from /etc/hosts file under Linux.
Can anyone advise what settings has to be entered under
Contol Panel -> Networking for Win98?
2. I am having hard times trying to follow the book "Apache - the
Definitive
guide" (II edition), maybe partially due to the fact that the authors
used FreeBSD. For example, the /etc/hosts file is:
127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain
192.168.123.2 www.butterthlies.com
192.168.123.2 sales.butterthlies.com
192.168.123.3 sales-IP.butterthlies.com
192.168.124.1 www.faraway.com
What I see in netcfg is :
127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain
192.168.123.2 sales.butterthlies.com
192.168.123.2 sales.butterthlies.com
192.168.123.3 sales-IP.butterthlies.com
192.168.124.1 www.faraway.com
And in linuxconf I see :
127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain
192.168.123.3 sales-IP.butterthlies.com
192.168.123.2 sales.butterthlies.com
192.168.123.2 www.butterthlies.com
192.168.124.1 www.faraway.com
Why is this difference? Both netcfg and linuxconf are supposed
to read the same /etc/hosts?
Thank you in advance, Andrei

Here's a couple of additional things I should mention.
When running Netscape in Linux, I initially am prompted for a proxy user ID
and passwd. It seems to accept them. At this point, I get messages at the
bottom of the Netscape window that say the connection to the web site has
been made and that it's attempting to connect to the proxy server. These
are two separate messages that flash back and forth rapidly.
I have the proxy settings set up in Netscape.
I have a RedHat 5.2, SuSE 6.0 and a Mandrake 6.0 box. In each case, I'm
running the version of Netscape that came on the CD. The symptom is common
to all.
Thanks for your help.

John,
thanks for the reply. /etc/resolve.conf points only to my local domain
servers. Further investigation reveals: some nameservers on the Internet at
large have the right ip stored, others (including the root servers!) have the
old ip on record. We email internic for some assistance on this one.
What could be going wrong? My only thought is there is more than one server
or group of servers that considers itself authoritative for the domain in
question.

Subject: This is really bugging me.:
Date: Wed, 11 Aug 1999 08:17:56 -0400
Hi:
I've been working with the following for a week:
I got a cisco router (2501) connected to the internet (T1, through some
DSU/CSU).
In the ethernet side of the cisco I have a firewall on NT (running
Checkpoint FW-1).
This NT server has three NICs: one external (to the cisco), two internals
(192.168.4.x) and 192.168.2.x.
The hosts in the segment 192.168.4.x are our internet servers (email, ftp,
www, etc)
And the NIC in the segmenet 192.168.2.x goes to my intranet.
If I'm in a host in the intranet, let's say 192.168.2.194 I can ping the
hosts in the segment 192.168.4.x. with no problem at all. It also works when
pinging from the firewall itself.
Poblem is when any of the hosts (no matter what segment 4 or 2) try to ping
the cisco router, no response from it.
>From the firewall you can ping the cisco, but no from other hosts inside any
of the subnets.
I tried this same configuration replacing the cisco router by a computer (in
Linux) as a test of the routing table of the firewall, but it worked great.
The weirdest thing comes now:
The NT server I am talking about is a new server I am creating as a
backup of another with the exact hardware and software configuration that
works with no problem at all.
I put a sniffer in the segment where the cisco is and when the new NT is
installed (of course using same IP addresses than the old one -the working
one ) the sniffer gets the Echo Request but it never gets a Echo Reply from
the cisco.
I've been thinking that may be it has to do with the Arp table in the cisco
router, so I turned it off and on again the clear the table but it didn't
solve the problem.
Any ideas,
I'm sorry for the length of the message, I don't know how to use less words
when trying to explain this thing.
Thanks, Andres

You could use your ISP as the Name Server (ns) address you
supply. Best bet IMHO is to configure your own simple DNS
daemon and supply that address to the NIC. Then use your ISP as
the secondary name server were you will do zone transfers as
needed to keep them up to date. Good Luck... --miked348

AFAIK the 192.168.*.* are unrouteable addresses, so there are no other ones
out there from the perspective of the app being delivered to the wrong
machine somewhere else on the 'Net. Also, the IP Masq. stuff should
basically tell the remote host that your ipmasq server w.x.y.z is the host
requesting the service. The service will be delivered from a.b.c.d to
w.x.y.z, and from there it will be forwarded to 192.168.0.2. That is a
technical as I can get at this point, since I am a relative newbie to linux
and ip masq

Subject: Samba and NT 4.0

I am running Linux 6.0 with Samba 2.0.3. I have succesfully setup a Samba
share that I can access with my Windows NT 4.0 Workstation machine with no
problems. Samba is setup to authenticate with my NT Domain Controller and
encryption is set to "yes". Here's the weird thing: If I change anything
at all in the Samba share (not smb.conf) then try to reconnect to the share
with my Windows NT 4.0 box, it prompts me for a password as if encryption
was not set to "yes". I've tried logging out and back in with my WinNT
machine, but to no avail.
The only thing that seems to work is to reintall Samba. This is not a good
option. Any ideas?

Subject: Corporate Site Access

Hi,
I would like to call into my company's corporate network using Netscape
4.51 (under Mandrake Linux 5.3). When I sign on to Worldnet using IE5 on
Windoze and access the page (ie https://www2.company.com), I get
prompted for the User Name, Password, and Domain) and can log in. When I
access the page in netscape, I get a box that says
"Enter username for unknown at www2.company.com" and requests the user
name and password (but not the domain). When I enter my login info, I
get the message:
401.2 Unauthorized: Logon Failed due to server configuration
How (or can I) get logged in thru Netscape?
TIA,
Mike

Thanks a mil. I spend most of yesterday struggling
with the HOW-TO's, but for some reason they aren't
as accessible as most of the others that I've read.
This will save me weeks of trial and error. :-)
