Any clues where to look?

I've done a 'workstation' load of RHL and added SAMBA using RPM. I've
tried everythiing under the sun and can't seem to get the danged thing
working!
The smbclient util seems to work OK, but I can't use smbmount worth a
darn. Taking the opposite approach, setting up the smb.conf doesn't get
me any MS98 readable shares - they don't even show up in the browsw
list.
This is my first REAL try at using SAMBA. Any pointers? Suggestions? is
this 'broken' under RHL6? I'm using the following books as my
references:
1) Teach Yourself SAMBA in 24 Hours (Sams)
2) Samba (SSC)
3) Linux Network Toolkit (IDG)
It all seem very straightforward - but 'no go'

Subject: Firewall question (strong ruleset)
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Francois Magnan)
Date: Tue, 18 May 1999 15:31:55 GMT
Hi,
I have been looking at a sample strong firewall ruleset and I
wonder why it blocks incoming packets for which the remote tcp port is
a privileged port like in the following rule:
ipchains -A input -p tcp -i $EXTERNAL_INTERFACE \
-s $ANYWHERE $PRIVPORTS -d $IPADDR -l -j DENY
where PRIVPORTS="0:1023".
I understand why I should block incoming packets going to the
privileged ports on my firewall but why should I be concerned about
the above??? How insecure would my system be if I omit this?
Thank you,
Francois Magnan

You should use the tags never_direct and always_direct.
ex:
# acl local-servers dstdomain foo.net
# acl all src 0.0.0.0/0.0.0.0
# never_direct deny local-servers
# never_direct allow all

I think your squid2 is not configured to forward the requests to your
parent instead of
making direct connections (always_direct and never_direct).
If you have no neighbour and only one parent you do not need to use ICP.
I suggest you to use the squid mailing-list (which is searcheable BTW)
for squid-related topics.

Hi,
I know it's a pretty new card, but it's worth asking:
does anyone have a working driver for this model ?

tried the new pcmcia-cs-3.0.10.. the closest was the

recognized the interface and couldn't get it up :)

If you are using RedHat 5.2, there is a IP masquerading software that need to
loaded into your Linux kernel. For more information about How-to setup IP
masq check the web site www.linux-howto.com and search for that topic.

You can use Secure Shell (ssh) to forward X through the firewall, provided
the ports (23 I think) is not blocked in the firewall.

I am trying to get the 'pppd' to work after I recompiled my 2.2.5 (SuSE
6.1) kernel to support SMP (and yes I made sure it included PPP support
:-) ). When I try and start pppd it comes back right away with a message
saying
pppd[262]: ioctl(PPPIOCGUNIT) : Operation not permitted(1)
pppd[262]: Hangup(SIGHUP)
pppd[262]: Exit.
(as taken from /var/log/messages)
However if I take the same makefile and just turn of SMP it works like a
charm (like now). Does anyone have ANY idea what this might be caused
by, and more importantly how to fix it. I would REALLY like to use BOTH
of my processors :-)
THANKS.

I suppose that the best place to start with using mod_perl is
www.apache.org's documentation. But can anybody recommend another source?
I'm having trouble writing CGI scripts in perl using Apache 1.3.4 with
mod_perl and (believe it or not) no trouble using perl scripts with Apache
1.3.6 on Win98 (mod_perl not included).
My Linux system is SuSE 6.0; if that creates special issues (installed as
per default), I'd like to know about it.
Having RTFMd, and still feeling no closer to my goal, I just wanted to see
if there are other FMs I should be Ring.
This is *wrong*, I feel it in my bones.

It is actually not that hard. There are many good websites describing
similiar setups.
<<--some peices sniped-->>
The server does not provide Internet access to the clients.
Perhaps it should. As was pointed out you do want to firewall your
internal lan.
I have the same deal (cable modem, linux box, NT workstation clients)
The linux box provides internet access to the clients (linux box is
running a caching name server, I point NT's DNS and default gateway to
the linux box. bam, I am on the net)

>I do not intend to run any additional local services (mail, Web, news, etc.)

you might want to disable them from the /etc/inetd.conf to prevent
them from being exploited.
>0. My ISP will provide a dynamically-allocated IP address. Does that mean I

(lets not have the arguement here about this OK??)
It appears that @home's preferred method is DHCP, however, some cable
companies (down to the district level) have some flexibility.
You should be prepaired to use DHCP (either now or in the future) but
it is possible you will get a static IP.
You need to be careful about what version of DHCPCD you use. I think
(correct me if I am wrong) 0.7 was for 2.0.x kernels.

Your "linux server" with two NIC's can do both.
Again, I can't remember the URL's but there are some good websites
which describe how to build the rc.firewall file.

My ISP has nothing to do with Sprint. This downed router is screwing me
over and I have no options!
It's extremely frustrating. I do belive the purpose of having routers is to
avoid downed connections right? I cannot believe that there is only one way
for me to get from point A to point B. There must be
other routes. I should be able to access these routes especially since I'm
paying for it. Other people's machines should not be allowed to grab my
packets and throw them into the bit bucket!!! That is unacceptable.
Who at Sprint is responsible for this router? How do I contact them?

1st, hda2 is NOT a (logical)partition in the extended partition,
they begin with hda6 ( 1-4 are primary )
do a dmesg|grep hda , should tell you sth like hda: hda1 hda5(hda6....)
whre the hdax in () are the logical drives in extended partition.
2nd: i THINK the fstype from dos is vfat ( if you are using win9x)
so i think mount -t vfat /dev/hda6 /mnt/DDrive should do the trick
man mount
( don't have a linux-box available right now)

I tried recompiling the kernel without IP:multicasting support, but that
has made no difference. The card used to work under windows so I'd be
surprised if it is a faulty card, since eepros are supported under

Are you running straight between the two systems via cross-over cable or
through a hub???
The first thing I would try is resetting the cards to half-duplex.. Most TX
cards don't do a good job of full duplexing.. And further, practically no
hubs or routers will do it unless they are way higher end than the stuff the
average "joe home-user" can afford.
I used to have significant troubles of the same nature, before I realized
our 3com hubs were only half-duplex, as was our Cisco... Once the NIC's
were set to half-duplex all the problems went away...

It looks like snmpd is not running or not enabled on the system you are
trying to get info from.
Is is a router? Another linux system? Something else?

Hi what kind of problems are you experiencing? (Text errors would be the
most helpful.) Thanks

I always refuse root telnet, but there were no reboots for failed
attempts. (Login incorrect is the only message on RH. Something like
Login refused would be displayed on Slackware.)
Can you log in as root from the console, or su to root, at all?
