Hello,
I am trying for several days now, still I am not succeeding:
An iMac is linked to my Linux box with attached printer (Canon BJ
200e)at lp1 and I tried to make it execute print orders made from the
iMac.
I am using the following:
Kernel 2.0.36
netatalk 1.4.2b
ghostscript 3.33
MacOS 8.1
Since my printer is not a PostScript printer I tried to set it up with
help of the information given by Mike Pearson:
<http://artoo.hitchcock.org/~flowerpt/projects/linux-netatalk/ghostscript.html>
This is what I receive:
Feb 9 06:15:48 plum xntpd[398]: kernel pll status change 89
Feb 9 06:15:48 plum syslog: ROOT LOGIN ON tty1
Feb 9 06:16:19 plum papd[478]: child 619 done
Feb 9 06:16:40 plum papd[478]: child 633 for "gs10e" from 41201.173
Feb 9 06:16:41 plum papd[633]: lp_init: lock: No such file or directory
Feb 9 06:16:41 plum papd[633]: lp_open failed
Feb 9 06:16:42 plum papd[478]: child 633 done
Feb 9 06:17:30 plum afpd[617]: done
Feb 9 06:17:30 plum afpd[480]: asp_chld 617 done
My Mac tells me that the document could not be printed due to a
PostScript error (I like those "precise" error msgs!)
This is all of the information I receive.
I have to say that printing directly from Linux is possible.
My papd.conf should be set up properly.
#
# Attributes are:
#
# Name Type Default Description
# pd str ".ppd" Pathname to ppd file.
# pr str "lp" LPD printer name.
# op str "operator" Operator name, for LPD spooling.
#
gs10e:\
:pr=lpr -Plp:op=apple:pd=/usr/local/atalk/etc/PPD/APLWNTR1.PPD:
(I set it to pr=lp and pr=ps, too)
My paths.h starts with:
/*
* papd paths
*/
#define _PATH_PAPDPRINTCAP "/etc/printcap"
#ifdef ultrix
#define _PATH_PAPDSPOOLDIR "/usr/spool/lpd"
#else ultrix
#define _PATH_PAPDSPOOLDIR "/var/spool/lpd"
#endif ultrix
#ifdef BSD4_4
#define _PATH_DEVPRINTER "/var/run/printer"
#else BSD4_4
#define _PATH_DEVPRINTER "/dev/lp1"
#endif BSD4_4
I already found some more information in formerly posted messages,
means:
1.Instead of using e.g. 'lp' directly I tried to pipe it with 'lpr -Plp'
in papd.conf
2. I tried to install the LaserWriter driver version 8.4.1 instead of
8.5.1 but unfortunately my system hangs when trying this, so I had to
reinstall ver 8.5.1
Is netatalk ver 1.42b compatible with MacOS 8.1?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance, Martin.

Hi,
Has anybody had success with installing NFR on an RedHat 5.2? The fixmake
returns:
missing sys-redhatHat.h
Although is file is there and I've done what the NFR docs have asked I'm
thinking the enviroment is wrong. I'll be "checking/tweaking" with the files,
but if anybody has already got NFR working, I'd appreciate the help.
The system is a Dell with no major changes to the kernel.
Thanks,
Tom

i think all this ppp stuff is much easier if u don't use the provided
scripts, and just make ur own - that's what i did, and it only took a little
tweaking and now any user can dial in and hang up - which is just what i
wanted :)

Subject: NIC Works Part Time ??
Date: Wed, 10 Feb 1999 23:22:32 -0600
Particulars:
D-Link DE-220PCT cards
PnP has been disabled
Works fine in Win95
Card in 486 computer works just fine Linux OS Debian 2.0.29
NE2000 driver ne.o loaded as module
Card in Pentium works part time Linux OS RedHat 2.0.31
NE2000 driver ne.o loaded as module
486 is Linux only. Pentium is dual boot Win95 and Linux
Problem:
When I boot Linux on the Pentium machine the NIC works only part of the
time. I initialize on boot up but have to take the NIC down and then back up
several times before it will work at all.
I have checked the interrupts and I/O address and they are OK.
IRQ 10, I/O 0x300 and when the card works it does so very well. I have run
out of ideas as to what the problem is and how to fix it.
I have read and reread the HOWTO's and have searched Deja News for a
description of the problem and a solution all to no avail.
Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.....
Thanx

Hello,
When I start Netscape, another process starts as well with a PID equal
to nestcape PID + 1 and a name of (dns helper). Occasionally, there
are several of these named processes. When Netscape crashes, sometimes
the (dns helper) process is still running and I have to kill it before I
can use Netscape again.
Does anyone know what this process is for? Is it needed?
I'm using pppd dialed into an ISP.
Thank you

I just had the EXACT same problem with my 3C509B.
1. Get the DOS installation disk or a bootable disk with the 3C5X9CFG.EXE
2. Disable the Plug-and-Pray (very important!)
3. Reboot if necessary and go back into 3C5X9CFG.EXE
4. Use the autoconfig option or manually change the IRQ
As soon as the autoconfig changed the IRQ from 10 to 11, every worked
great - telnet, ping, http, ftp, and so forth.

Interesting thread. However Exchange Server is not just an email
system. If the management want to go to Exchange for the
Groupware functionality, there is no advantage in attacking it
just on the email front. (I know he says "email" in the original
message)
Exchange Server is reputed to be a bucket of bugs, but the same
functionality is not available as a *single* package under Linux,
is it?

Hi all
can anyone please explain this .....
I have apache 1.3 running on port 8080. When i ask it from remote to serv
an external site, it does so very well. However when i ask it to serv pages
local to the machine's own hd eg the "its worked" page and the docs, the
error log reports that "connection refused on xx.xx.xx.xx port 80". I also
get the connection refused proxy page.
Is there a reason why local content is trying to be served through port 80?
I am doing all the admin and testing from remote.

Looks like you don't have a proper route added to your route table...please post
>route -n< as well as your >ifconfig -a< and the network adress you are trying
to ping. Maybe you are in a different subnet?
You should also try monitoring the network traffic with >tcpdump -i eth0(or
whatever your NIC is)< while you are trying to ping other machines.
Cheers,
Stefan

Have you looked at the source? I had this problem, but my notebooks
don't say how I got rid of it. I have a vague recollection that it
was a simple config problem, so check for leading hashes in your
rc. files! Do you use modules, and is the correct module activated
at boot time? Are you sure the card still works?

Well I know no-one answered this but I have had lots
of help in the past for other things.
So I thought I would let you all know I got diald working
in case anyone else has a similar problem
It turned out there were 2 problems with the /etc/connect script.
There was no space between chat and -v in one section
( the bit which should initialise the modem ). Fixing that got it
dialing.
Stiil getting errors when I watched /var/log/messages.
lots of wrong responses although the variables seemed to be set
correctly.
when through the script and replaced each $VARIABLE_NAME with the
values they contained.
Now it works.
All I have to do now is tune the timeouts.

Subject: Yet another IP Masquerading question to throw in the pile..
Date: Fri, 12 Feb 1999 09:05:41 -0000
OK, first off, I got IP Masquerading to work without a hitch, very easy to
do.. I even got diald to connect reliably (that one took a LONG time!)
Anyway, when I have the connection open, I always have a tail -f
/var/log/messages going to see what is going on. Once in a while, I get a
lot of messages saying something like what I have right now:
Feb 12 08:46:39 flaming kernel: MASQ: failed TCP/UDP checksum from
209.38.216.19
3!
Feb 12 08:46:42 flaming kernel: MASQ: failed TCP/UDP checksum from
204.221.176.2
30!
Feb 12 08:46:51 flaming last message repeated 5 times
And I have a lot of these messages. Could I have done something wrong? It
is set up exactly like the IP-Masquerade mini-howto, with different IPs, of
course. It is very annoying because it really makes a loss in bandwidth. I
can look at the throughput chart and see the KB die down for a while, and
then work it's way back up, coinciding with the errors.
I also have another, minor problem, more of an annoyance. Every 10 minutes,
diald dials up the internet connection, fails to get it's first packet
within 2 minutes, and then hangs up. It does this with every other machine
on the network turned off, so it has to be something in Linux. Right now I
am running SuSE 5.3 with most of the networking options I need enabled. I
just set up sendmail, but I don't think that would try to go through an
outside machine. It is very annoying, because it is not a dedicated line
(like I wish for).
Well, that is all I can think of, have been up for two days now, so the
brain isn't functioning fully.
Thanks,
R.C.
