Using minicom is a poor way of bringing up pppd. Here I suspect by the
time you noted the connection had been made, exited minicom and started
pppd, the ISP software had decided that something had happened and was in
another mode and about to hang up. It did hangup about 10 seconds after
you started pppd cutting short to 4 the usual 10 initial LCP messages
that pppd sends before timing out.
: Now, I understand that this message essentially means that I was unable
: to get an 8 bit data connection as the provider continued to send me 7
: bit ascii connection information, but don't understand if it's right at
: all. Could anyone perhaps tell me by looking at this if my modem is
: configured properly, because after all I want to be sure that my modem
: is working (in the examples I've shown, i didn't set up the modem with
: isapnptools).
All of this looks reasonable to me. The PPP session failure could be
due to a setserial misconfiguration of the UART or IRQ but not likely.

I am having trouble with ppp.
I am using LT internal modem, which is fine under win98, but linux 5.2 can not find
that.
It's on com3 ( /dev/cua2 ), irq 9, uart 16550.
Statserial shows input/output error. I checked that serial port was using irq 2. but I
cannot change that irq.
How.?
Appreciate any help.

This helped me a ton. Not entirely outdated, but a bit before RH6.0.
You shouldn't really run into to many problems with it though.

If I get this right, you have one Linux box that is filtering and
masquerading
and another that is a workstation (as well as a W95 workstation). If that
is the
picture, and the filter/masquerade box has any fairly recent Pentium (and a
PCI
bus) in it, that box should have no trouble keeping up with normal traffic
coming
in off a cable modem. However, you should make sure that this box doesn't
have to deal with traffic on your internal net (except for packets headed to
or
from the Internet, because you can easily swamp it with a 100Mb/s
connection).

Your clients must use the same ip address and give .2 as the default
gateway. If they dont do this, you can try to use proxy arp on the inside
interface (echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/conf/ethX/proxy_arp). This will
answer each reqest for a hardware address on ethX from foreign hosts with
the address of the firewall IF the network is on the other side of the
firewall (i.e. a route to the destination is pointing NOT to ethX).

I have an NT & solaris network environment. i have heard and read about
linux. One thing that has attracted me to linux is its stability as a
server (no crashing on a weekly basis like nt).
I am currently using NT for the following, what services could i run on
linux?:
DNS
WINS Server
DCHP Server
File/CD-Rom Server
Web Server
Backup Server (Seagate Backup Exec)
Firewall (CheckPoint Firewall-1 4.0)
Master Browser
RAS
Print Server
IMAP Server (exchange)
SMTP Server (exchange)
LDAP (netscape)
Network Monitoring
I am trying to figure out how linux can improve my network environment.

Hallo Everybody,
I'm just started to learn about Linux and LRP. But I've got the problem
that I can get connection with my network. The two NIC (longshine ethernet
ISA cards,
I also tried with 3Com 3C509B)are configurated to different IO addresses and
IRQ's.
I also downloaded a module that is for Ethernet cards.
When I start LRP, the following massage is send to me:
lib/modules/card1/card2 does not exist.
SIOSCIFADDR: operation not supported by device
SIOCSIFNETMASK:operation not supported by device
SIOCSIFBRDADDR:operation not supported by device
etho: unknown interface
eth1: unknown interface
Does anybody know what my problem is and how I can solve it.
Thanks in advance

I use a linux box with windowsNT inside a virtual machine (vmware).

requests going outside the virtual network.
>From winNT I can use all the standard services (like telnet, ftp, ping,

domain fails, because the NT client cannot find the domain controller.
Is this a problem of the NetBIOS protocol and ip_masquerading?
Does anyone knows a solution for that problem?

Curt,
Thanks for the reply.
I tried what you said, but it didn't seem to work (I did one thing at
a time, testing each one in case I hit the "golden key", but no luck).
What is the name of the X network configurator? I use KDE and have
a base RedHat installation (although I have upgraded most of the
s/ware and the kernel from the original RH 5.2 installation). I
can't see a program that seems to do the trick and "man -k" searches
didn't yield anything either.
Thanks once again for your help.

You can only wait or try a second isp instead.

Roger... thanks for your idea(s). It turns out the solution is much
easier:

IPX support IS in the kernel by default...
The SLIST command is broken! Since I always tried SLIST fist (to see my
NetWare servers) I never thought to execute ncpmount.
Of course ncpmount works just fine... Now Redhat needs to fix slist!

Actually the IP address can be always the same. I saw a DHCP server
that uses to associate the IP address with the ID of the Ethernet card
so it remains always the same unless you replace the card. The problem
is with the DDNS (dynamic DNS). Depending on the DHCP client there can
be or cannot be a way of sending the host name that you want to
use. If the network uses a lot of NT machines it's likely that they
convert from Netbios name to host name using WINS. In this scenario I
had a lot of trouble trying to assign a host name from Linux.
