I have 4 PC's at home and I want to run a network between them.
I have Win98 installed on 3 of those PC's and Red Hat 6 on the last one.
The only problem is that I cant get the Linux box to get access to the
network. I can't ping any of the other machines but I'm able to ping my
network card which has ip : 192.168.1.2
The other machines has 192.168.1.1, .3 and .4 and they haven't got any
problem communicating with each other.
Netmask is 255.255.255.0
Network is 192.168.1.0 (-duh :)
By the way... I have a Compaq Netflex card and the driver/module for it is
called ThunderLan or TLAN... I think maybe there is some problem there but I
did use that card on another pc with Red Hat 5.2
I get an message saying : " trying TLAN : eth0 : autonegotiation" -I got
pissed off from this msg and commented it out from the source and recompiled
the module.
It shouldn't be so hard setting up a local network but this time I'm
lost.... -help!!

I just installed Caldera 2.2 with samba. I have an application made with
Microsoft Cobol 4.0 that`s worked fine in the past using Novell Netware as
the server. But, this same application running on Linux with Samba dont't
work correct when open a file using the cobol command for this with the
option for manual lock. When an user use the aplicattion the others are not
alowed to open the same data file due the locking from the first user.
Someone have a solution for this

I'd like to connect one computer using Linux with my Novell LAN. I
configured the LAN card (it's a NetGear FA310TX) that is working well
when the computer is running Windows 95 (I have the 2 OS installed) and
the IPX protocol is set to auto configuration. The Tulip.c module is
working, but I do not know how to do to get access to my Netware Server.
I'm just beginning in Linux world and any response will be appreciated,

I have a constant PPP connection to the net and am interested in
dynamically bringing up the 2nd line as the demand for network resouces
increases (kind-of like bandwidth on demand, DBA or BACP with ISDN).
Any leads or resoures would be appreciated..

I have the same machine. I only got the interface to work after i upgarded
the kernel to 2.2.9 from 2.0.36. On the 2.0 kernel it always told me the
interface was busy when i tried to load it with modprobe.
The only problem on my system: it crashes afterwards. Looks like the
interface in my system is broken.
You do need the pcnet32 driver. You can load it dynamically with "modprobe
pcnet32", then you can activate it using the ifconfig and route commands
I know you can find specific information on installing Linux on a Compaq
Deskpro XL on the internet, but i don't know exactly where.
Good luck.

How many IP addresses does your cable company give you? AFAIK, most cable
modem setups only give you one IP address. If that's the case, IP
masquerading is your only choice, since to use a bridge or conventional
router, you need to have valid IP addresses for all your computers. IP
masquerading will also improve your network's security substantially,
since the only machine visible to the outside world will be the IP
masquerading box.

It could email the IP address to your office email address.
In any case, ringconnectd ought to do it. But it needed some tweaking.

Subject: Problem with direct ethernet connection
Dear Linux friends,
I use twisted-pair cable (crossed over, not normal twisted-pair) to
connect 2 computers directly.
It works perfect under Win98, if I set 2 computers' IP-addresses as
follows:
129.130.93.222
129.130.93.223
Under Linux it doesn't work, ping to another computer seesm just be
impossible. Although, if I change the cable back to normal TwistedPair
(TP) and then connected to our hub, it can problemlessly connect to
internet.
/var/log/messages tells me
kernel: eth0: Setting full-duplex based on MII #0 link partner
capability of 41e1.
and ifconfig command tells me
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:60:08:B5:73:E2
inet addr:129.130.93.222 Bcast:130.60.93.255
Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:99 errors:2 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:2
TX packets:44 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:44
collisions:0 txqueuelen:100
Interrupt:10 Base address:0x100
BTW, the two computers are laptops with 3Com PCMCIA Ethernet cards
(auto-dedecting 10/100TX)
Can anyone help me solving this problem?
I feel something special must be set under linux, not only IP-addresses,
right?
Thanks a lot in advance!

We have a linux machine that acts as a gateway with a DSL and an FTP
server. There is ne specific account that only some folks have access
to. This account is obviously a generic account but in order to have
ftp access the shell has to be something such as bash. Due to the
generic nature of the account and the fact that it has a shell, I would
like to disable telnet access for just that one account without
disabling telnet. Does anyone know how or if this is possible?

This sounds about right. I was initially trying it in slot 5 and that
obviously didn't work. I believe it's working now in slot 4, so this
would pretty much match what I'm seeing.
You wouldn't happen to know anything about the busmastering
capabilities of the slots would you? I heard the BX6 only allowed
busmastering on the first three PCIs and a lot of assumptions that
this carried over to the BP6. Nothing concrete and nothing documented
of course...
Regardless, it seems to be working.. I just hope I don't need any more
PCI cards anytime in the near future. :-)

Unless you want a REAL network, not one where you'll have to pray the
package gets sent and that it won't crash the box. Some ISA 3Com cards can
be had for $40 or less ($15 secondhand...) I recommend 3Com 3c509 ISA cards
to everyone who is looking for simple-to-install, rock stable and very fast
networkcards without a big pricetag. These cards will be more than
sufficient for most users and you'll never have trouble breaking it or with
OS support.

I've found a possible bug in the iproute2-2.2.4-now-ss990530.tar.gz package.
README file tell to make some changes to the Makefile file, but I thoughht
my system was OK with the predefined parameters:
Contents of Makefile:

Than I typed "make", but during linking this message apperared:

I noticed an SIOCSIFNAME occurrence, but it seems not predefined.
I found this declaration in /usr/src/linux/include/linux/socksio.h, so I
included this line in iplink.c (in the include section):
#include <linux/socksio.h>
Retyping "make" from the source dir now it seems to work fine.
I still am not able to compile documentation (cd doc , make generates some
error), but I think this is not very important.
I hoep this could help you and please fell free to send me all your
suggestion, corrections and so on.
Thanks.

First of all: I hope you mean dhcpcd, or else I thouroughly misunderstand
dhcp :-). Pump works fine for me, but I'm currently switching back to dhcpcd,
because it is much more functional. (Running scripts on ip change etc).
Having a bit of trouble with it actually, so maybe somebody here can help. I'm
using a changed mac address (with ifconfig). I know the dhcp server only
replies to requests from that mac. Does anybody know if dhcpcd ignores that
info and gets the mac from the card or something?
