Subject: ppp chat script help needed
Date: Thu, 20 May 1999 12:42:07 -0700

new to linux running redhat 5.2 k2.0.36
need help on some aspects of ppp
My ppp connection works from the command line when I type:

# /usr/sbin/pppd /dev/modem 57600 debug connect "/usr/sbin/chat -v ''
ATD<telenumber> CONNECT \r ogin: <username> assword: <password>"

now if I run #/sbin/ifup ppp0 the connect script fails because this command
runs a different chat script. Where is the chat script this command is
using? Is it the one in the /etc/ppp/options file? I'm not sure how to
translate the working command line script into a script to insert into the
file. I've tried quite a few permutations but none have worked. I've found
that the \r can be replaced with '' (2 single quotes) or \d\c and still
connect without any problems. Also I've noticed in my ppp log this line
"last message repeated 23 times" is this normal or does something need to be
edited? I have this command line in my /etc/ppp/options file:
connect "/usr/sbin/chat -v '' ATD<telenumber> CONNECT \d\c ogin <username>
assword <password>"
but editing it doesn't seem to change the errors in the log file when using
/sbin/ifup ppp0

here is a snip of the log when connecting successfully with the command line

It would, but it wouldn't explain how I can mount and share something
like a CD-ROM, which is unwriteable.

I'd just as soon not have to convert about 180 gigabytes of files
from one filesystem to another, so I'm hoping there's some overlooked
config setting or something I don't know about.

Subject: PPP and modem or Sygate/Windows 98 and Linux Help
Date: Thu, 20 May 1999 16:55:29 -0400

Hi all,
I just can't get access to the internet. No matter what I try ( I try
KPPP and modem first. It dials and validates OK, then hang up and told
me that pppd is not loaded or something.), I just can't get an internet
connection. This is with kernel 2.0.36 - SUSE 6.0 distribution. So I
decided to update my kernel to 2.2.8 which I did successfully. Now,
when I try KPPP, it doesn't recognized my modem.

So I decided to try Sygate and Windows 98. I think I have set up the
Windows98 side right but how does anybody know how to set the Linux
side? My Windows98 IP address is 200.200.200.10 and my Linux IP is
200.200.200.5 with submask 255.255.255.0

Thanks

In general if you want things to rerun everytime you reboot, add them to
/etc/rc.d/rc.local

Although, if you have been able to get Xwindows going, run the network
configurator.
netcfg

Subject: RoadRunner and hostname
From: Roger Vaughn <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I have a minor problem with my RH 5.2 system. It seems that when I login
to RoadRunner, my hostname gets reset to what RoadRunner thinks it should be,
rather than what I configured it as. Since the box is a server for a small
net, this causes me some headaches.

Any hints on why this is happening and how I can prevent it?

Thanks!

I've never had a problem with PnP setup. I just run pnpdump, uncomment
the configuration I want, copy it to /etc/isapnp.conf and then reboot.
Works every time for me. :)

Of course, in the BUGS section of pnpdump manpage:
BUGS
Doesn't seem to work with newer computers, particularly
       with network cards. Cause unknown.

I got similar results. It seems RedHat replaced nfsd-2.2 with knfsd-1.2.
While both programs showed Version 2 under rpcinfo it seems a version 3
client cannot negotiate down to ver 2 with the knfsd problem.

I have removed knfsd from my system and put back nfsd-2.2 and things seem to
be working again. I am still hunting down more info on both packages, but
am not having much sucess. If you learn anything, please pass it along and
I will do the same

Subject: PPP Compression
Date: Fri, 21 May 1999 09:22:37 +0000

Hi,

Is it somehow possible to activate a PPP compression under
Linux? For example when I use Windoze 98 and download a file
via 28.8 kbps modem containing random characters

  ftp://ftp.dolphins.ch/pub/Dolphins/10Mb.random

and another with zero characters

  ftp://ftp.dolphins.ch/pub/Dolphins/10Mb.zeros

The transfer speed of the latter is about tree times higher
(90.2 kbps instead of 26.2 kbps) which indicates on the fly
compression. The same procedure with the same modem but under
Linux (pppd 2.3.8) gives me two almost same download times.

That's not good. What can be done to fix this problem?

Regards,
Bernd

That's definitely not true. I'm using it with a nullmodem. You might want to

Hi, there

I hope, someone can help me. Thank you in advance.

After months of making first and further steps in
Linux (starting as an absolute Newbie in Unix and
still feeling as one) I got the permission from my
bosses to build a file-server for win9x-, winNT-
and Mac-Clients. Our primary Server runs NT 4.0.
Samba does already work fine. But with netatalk I
am having problems.

The Linux-machine runs SuSE 6.1 Ger. Netatalk
version is 1.4b2+asun2.0a18.2

This is my afpd.conf:
- -transall -noguest -cleartxt -setpassword
-savepassword

And now my problems:

1) The users cant change their passwords. How can
I fix this? Is there perhaps a detailed
description of the options in afpd.conf available
(the one delivered with netatalk -obviously- was
not enough ...)

2) As already done with Samba, I would like to
route login-requests for the mac-shares on the
Linux-machine over to the NT-Server (which has
still to be our "first" Server). Is this possible?
How?

3) AppleShare over TCP / IP does not work. Why?
How will it?

My modem is a Diamond SupraExpress 336i Voice PnP modem (same as yours I
think). I've had similar problems. Does your modem work without using
isapnptools or setserial? Mine appears to, but it runs too slowly due to
misconfiguration, too slowly in fact to establish a PPP connection. I
managed to copy my settings from Windows 95 and try to set them with
Isapnptools and Setserial, but have not been successful so far. Could we
keep in touch perhaps? I'm sure I could use whatever information you find
and vice-versa.
Here is Diamond's word on our problem:

Look at :

        http://www.erdw.ethz.ch/~bonk/hp850/hp850.html

there is a driver that is supposed to work with hp890, maybe it will
do for HP895 ? I use it for my HP870cxi Printer. Although its painful
to compile ghostscript and then the driver, it works (with a gamma
of 3.0, see documentation of the driver).

good luck

What a strange isp who won't give you their nameservers?

anyway i looked them up

Server: localhost
Address: 127.0.0.1

Non-authoritative answer:
plus.net.uk nameserver = ns1.force9.net
plus.net.uk nameserver = ns2.force9.net

Authoritative answers can be found from:
plus.net.uk nameserver = ns1.force9.net
plus.net.uk nameserver = ns2.force9.net
ns1.force9.net internet address = 195.166.128.16
ns2.force9.net internet address = 195.166.128.17

(force9.co.uk is the same)

I really hate this damned machine
I wish that they would sell it.
It never does quite what I want
But only what I tell it.
