Upgrading a kernel is a bit more complicated than upgrading
other packages. RedHat has a web page which describes in detail
what should be done

Subject: [Q] Wvdial + /etc/ppp/ip-up
Date: Sat, 14 Aug 1999 11:00:13 -0400
I am using wvdial-1.40-1 as my primary dialup connection to the
Internet. My computer is installed with SuSE-6.1 Linux distro. The
questions that I would like to ask are:
1. Does wvdial call /etc/ppp/ip-up once it makes a dialup connection?
2. If wvdial does not call /etc/ppp/ip-up once the connection is made,
how can one make wvdial to execute a local script or program once a
connection is established?
The reason I am asking these questions is that I would like to be able
to use wvdial or any other PPP dialer to update to a dyn DNS server with
the newly established IP. Currently, I am using both the dyndns.org and
penguinpowered.com.
An e-mail response is certainly most welcome. TIA

The easiest way to do this is during installation of Linux. Mandrake even
autodetected my ne2000 compatible but other disto's will let you select
ne2000 compat from a list during setup.

>/sbin/ipchains -A input -p TCP -i ppp0 -d 0/0 119 -j DENY
>/sbin/ipchains -A input -p TCP -i ppp0 -d 0/0 515 -j DENY
You may want to try some variation of the rule below to block
initiation
of all incomming tcp sessions (note the -y). After all unless you're
running
some sort of service such as a web server or whatever, then
nobody has any reason to connect to your machine. Try it.
/sbin/ipchains -A input -p tcp -i ppp0 -y -j DENY
># Explicitly deny traffic aimed at the following UDP services:
>/sbin/ipchains -A input -p UDP -i ppp0 -d 0/0 111 -j DENY
>
># Deny traffic aimed at the X server.
>/sbin/ipchains -A input -p TCP -i ppp0 -d 0/0 5999:6100 -j DENY
I think the ranges for XWindows is 6000-60nn where nn is the max
# of concurrent X sessions you expect to ever have, but this is not
your problem.
># Deny all spoofing.
>#/sbin/ipchains -A input -p all -i ppp0 -s 0/0 -d 0/0 -j DENY
You need to know your IP address to prevent spoofing of
your assigned IP address (on the internet side). -s 0/0 means
"from anywhere" and -d 0/0 means "to anywhere". This rule
alone will close you down -- it's denying everything. I suggest
getting your PPP address within the firewall script by grepping
the output of ifconfig ppp0 and setting an environment variable
called MYIP. Then use a rule like this:
/sbin/ipchains -A input -p all -i ppp0 -s $(MYIP) -d 0/0 -j DENY
># Deny traffic from impossible/private/reserved addresses.
>#/sbin/ipchains -A input -p all -i ppp0 -s 10.0.0.0/0 -d 0/0 -j DENY
>#/sbin/ipchains -A input -p all -i ppp0 -s 172.16.0.0/0 -d 0/0 -j
DENY
>#/sbin/ipchains -A input -p all -i ppp0 -s 192.168.0.0/0 -d 0/0 -j
DENY
Your ISP may use a router that is in one of these classes. I would
just leave these commented out, but be sure to block traffic that
claims to be bound for any private network you might have.
Also, I guess you should block traffic that claims to be to or from
your loopback device, but isn't. Like this:
# this rule should come very early in your input rules. before you
might accept
# a bogus packet
/sbin/ipchains -A input -i lo -j ACCEPT
# at this point no traffic can be from or to loopback, because we just
accepted it all above
/sbin/ipchains -A input -i ppp0 -s 127.0.0.0/8 -b -j DENY

I'm fairly sure that the spoofing rule was at fault here.
One final tip: Check out the ipchains -l (dash little L) option for
logging. See the man page.
One more final tip: Use 'ipchains -vL input' to see your rule-match
counters!
One more final tip (I promise): tcpdump is cool!
Good luck and don't fear the Penguin!

Hi there folks,
I need help ! I have a network with 2 Win98 machines, 2 RedHat Linux

My modem works fine in minicom.
I have a symbolic link from /dev/modem to /dev/ttyS1

The other rmachine has a USR 33.6 with jumpers.

Actyally, I've seen the kermit script and a bunch of pager daemons,
but I don't need anything like that. I can send the page from minicom
just fine, so all I need o figure out is how to send the command to
the serial port from a script.
I have tried echo "atdt1234567" ? /dev/modem
and it doesn't do anything. Has anybody verified that this does in
fact work?
If somebody could try dialing their other phone from the command line
and let me know if it works, I would appreciate it.

I have little development experience with C and have acquired a copy of

Having unpacked the download and read the docs included I find I am required
to compile diald by typeing "make depend" then "make" then "make install"
Each of these fails - primarily with thousands of warnings and eventually

The warnings are of the type "/usr/include/linux/in.h 169: warning
"INADDR_MAX_LOCAL_GROUP redefined"
I have red-hat V6.0 with glibc-devel 2.1.1 libraries.
Can someone point me in the right direction to sort this out please ??

Subject: Send a command to the modem

How do I send a command to the modem from a script?
I have two systems, both running Redhat 6.0.
One has a USR v.90 Pnp (running ISAPNP)
One has a USR 33.6 with jumpers.
Both modems are COM2 IRQ3
I have setup links on both machines as follows:
ln -s /dev/ttyS1 /dev/modem
(I have also tried it on /dev/cua1 as well as echoing characters
directly to /dev/ttyS1)
Both modems work fine from minicom and dialup using PPP.
I'm trying to write a script that will send an ATDT command to the
modem. I have tried....
echo ATDT1234567 > /dev/modem
echo "ATDT1234567" > /dev/modem
echo ATDT1234567\r > /dev/modem
echo "ATDT1234567"\r > /dev/modem
cat pagedave > /dev/modem ....where pagedave contains the line:
ATDT1234567
chat -v -- "" ATDT1234567
chat '' ATDT1234567
chat "" ATDT1234567
chat "" "ATDT1234567"
Nothing works! Again, everything works fine in MINCOM and with my PPP
connection. Can somebody please try this out on their system and let
me know. I'm getting very frustrated because this should be SO easy.
Thanks..

Oops, this was a typo. I meant that I have tried
echo "atdt1234567" > /dev/modem

Hello,
When I visit some websites netscape just die's and "Bus Error" is
printed on the teriminal from where it was started.
This always happens on the same websites, example: www.mico.org
I've tested both netscape 4.51 and 4.6 and the same thing.
The pages work in lynx.
I am using RedHat 6.0
I would be greatful for any tips on how to fix it.

I have done that and it works, but the problem: when I point 1 virtual
domain to that web server, The web server becomes the server for that
domain. I cannot assign all of my Virtuals to the one IP address of the web
server. They would all point to the same address.. Somehow I need to be able
to have my web server pick up the IP's I have assigned to each domain..

If you replace your 'root.hints' file with an empty file while you are
offline and restart the nameserver then it will return an 'Unknown host'
error immediately (instead of the lengthy timeout you mentioned),
solving your problem.
The most practical way to achieve this is keep your working root.hints
as root.hints.online. Then in your 'ppp-up' script (or equivalent - I
use SuSE linux) add:
cp /named/path/here/root.hints.online /named/path/here/root.hints
ndc restart
And in your 'ppp-down' script put:
echo > /named/path/here/root.hints
ndc restart
Unfortunately, every time you restart the nameserver the cache is
'cleaned', but if you only started using the nameserver to minimise
timeouts then this doesn't really matter.
