Subject: Kernel 2.2 TCP incompatible with certain Unices?

I would be grateful to hear from any TCP/IP gurus regarding this
puzzling problem.
I have an SMP Pentium Pro box that runs kernel 2.2.9. While the other
machines on the LAN (Windows and Linux) have no problems, this single
machine cannot fetch data from certain sites -- not all sites, just a
few. It seems to stall, even while the 2.0.36 machine next to it
happily downloads the site.
The two sites I've noticed this stall on are:
http://www.werbach.com
http://www.winfiles.com (sorry :)
It's interesting to note that queso reports that both these sites run
"BSDi or IRIX."
I've booted the SMP box back to a 2.0.36 kernel (the stock RH 5.2 one)
and it then works fine! Am I finding evidence that the 2.2 kernel (or
at least, the 2.2 kernel as I've configured it) has a TCP
incompatibility with a BSDi/IRIX TCP stack? For what it's worth, I've
not only tried recompiling the kernel as minimally as possible
(including non-SMP), I've also swapped NICs to see if it made a
difference; nothing changed the stalling. I've also ruled out the
firewall by deactivating it. I've been using GNU 'wget' in runlevel 3
to do this testing.
I'm happy to hear any and all suggestions! Thanks.
Regards,
Chris Powell

Thank you!
That's very clearly my problem!
IP forwarding is on, but not masquerading. Will correct this!

Subject: Unable to ping sites by names after PPP connection
Date: 21 May 1999 13:31:01 GMT
Hi, I'm a newbie in linux and currenly trying to get my PPP connection to
work properly. Hope that someone can help me out.
I'm able to get my PPP connection to connect to my ISP. After connected,
I'm able to ping the nameserver IP addresses and other IP addresses of
other sites. However, I'm not able to ping any sites by their names, and
not able to open any page or websites with Netscape.
The following is the information of the related files:
(1) /etc/resolv.conf
search bellsouth.net
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xx
nameserver xxx.xxx.x.x
(2) /etc/host.conf
order hosts, bind
multi on
(3) /etc/ppp/options
lock
crtscts
defaultroute
noauth
The following is the output messages of my log file upon connection:

I have no idea of what the line
modprobe: no dependancy information for module: "/dev/ttyS1"
really means.
When I run /sbin/route -n I get the following output:
Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface
xxx.xxx.xxx.xx 0 . 0 . 0 . 0 255.255.255.255 UH 0 0 1 ppp0

0 . 0 . 0 . 0 xxx.xxx.xxx.xx 0 . 0 . 0 . 0 UG 0 0 0 pppo
Would it be possible that the route is the source of the problem? It seems
correct to me though.
By the way, I'm running Red Hat 5.2 kernel 2.0.36 pppd 2.3.5
Help would be greatly appreciated.

it work well here with a NIS map auto.master
I also use AMD in order to have a /net/<host>/<mount> automounter
you can find it on Suse 5.3, but not on 6.0. maybe on suse 6.1, but tell me please,
I'm interested...
what is better in 6.1 compared to 6.0 ?

They were carefully chosen addresses that were legal for intranets but
are guaranteed to not be used on the 'net! Yes! I see the problem!
Thanks you very much for you help!
Where would we be without the 'net?

If you start dhcpd with -d -f parameters, and when W95 is requesting an IP
address, if you see something like "can't reach network..." then you probably
don't have a static route to 255.255.255.255. Read the DHCP HOWTO.

As little as a P133, 16M, 250M + data space, CD ROM will do it under RedHat
5. I used that for ADSL at 1.1 meg download rate! (I need much more
resources to run console xwindows than serving tcp/ip packets.) You might
want to get two NIC's that you know will run under the drivers in your
distribution, rather than the cheapest generic cards. Otherwise plan on
spending some time finding the right drivers.

You might have to add a static route to 255.255.255.255. Read through the
DHCPD HOWTO because it covers this specific issue with W95.

: It's in section vcache. minfilecache=x, maxfilecache=x. At least on
: Win98.
: However you should also be able to disable write-behind-caching through
: Control Panel-System-(right most card)-problem solving (translated from
: german, sorry).
: I certrainly don't hope that Win caches remote drives. Smartdrv always
: refused that, and I thought that was pretty smart of him ;).
I determined that the problem has nothing to do with NFS. In my first
post, I said that editing files directly on the server made the
problem go away. That isn't true after all.
I tried playing with the minfilecache and maxfilecache values - what
do you think they should be set to? Also, could this be a Samba
config problem? I can't seem to find anything in the docs related to
this...
I will certainly post my solution to this problem. Thanks for the
suggestions,
Charles Wright

Subject: Looking for UNIX RADIUS test client

I'm looking for some way to test a Livingston 1.16 RADIUS server from a
UNIX (Linux) machine. I'd like something that I can request via username
and password, and then see all the values that are sent back in response.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Dave

Subject: Re: help needed w. Diamond 336i modem installation

My modem is a Diamond SupraExpress 336i Voice PnP modem (same as yours I
think). I've had similar problems. Does your modem work without using
isapnptools or setserial? Mine appears to, but it runs too slowly due to
misconfiguration, too slowly in fact to establish a PPP connection. I
managed to copy my settings from Windows 95 and try to set them with
Isapnptools and Setserial, but have not been successful so far. Could we
keep in touch perhaps? I'm sure I could use whatever information you find
and vice-versa.
Here is Diamond's word on our problem:

Net-pf-6 is the NETROM packet protocol. If you don't use it, put 'alias
net-pf-6 off' in /etc/conf.modules.

Subject: how to speed up connection-establishement with pppd?
Date: Fri, 21 May 1999 10:21:04 GMT
Hi!!
I have a Linux-Box (YEAHH I just love it!!) as Proxy (Squid +
Masquerade) for a small LAN using a 56K-Modem for Dial-up. The LAN
formerly used A NT-Box with WinGate.
I noticed, that Wingate definitively dialed faster (shorter delay)
than pppd 2.3.8 (setup to dial on demand) does. It is annying for
example using Eudora to fetch mail. The time pppd needs to establish
the connection is too long for Eudora. You always have to reinitiate a
'fetch new mail' (it runs into a timeout on first try). On Wingate
this worked fine.
Has anyone any idea how to speed up that stuff??
