I don't understand this. I'm using IP masquerading and built in firewalling. It works
for me. There's something about your setup your not telling us. Don't hold back!

I understand. Believe me I had the same problems with netscape 4.5 under linux (RH
5.1). But I gave up 4.5! I saw the light! It's 4.08 and stability for me now! (Tears
stream down my face).

Plugins never installed correctly for me under Linux either. But a wise internet
person
(Thomas Zajic) showed me his .mailcap and .netscape/plugin files. I was moved. I was
moved to vi my own damn files and make them work.
Thomas Zajic said something like:

First of all, why add entries to this file manually? Use Netscapes
Configuration menu for thisSecond, you got the format wrong in your ~/.mailcap file.
This is
what mine looks like (its from Navigator 3.04, though):
TK212017089010:~$ cat ~/.mailcap
#mailcap entry added by Netscape Helper
audio/x-wav;wavplay -q %s
#mailcap entry added by Netscape Helper
audio/x-midi;playmidi %s > /dev/null
#mailcap entry added by Netscape Helper
video/x-msvideo;xanim +q +Ze %s
#mailcap entry added by Netscape Helper
video/quicktime;xanim +q +Ze %s
#mailcap entry added by Netscape Helper
video/mpeg;xanim +q +Ze %s
Note the ";" between MIME type and helper app!
Third, Im using the AcroRead plugin on my system (as opposed to a
helper app):
TK212017089010:~$ cat ~/.netscape/plugin-list

available for that specific user.

Hi! I can't get dhcpd running on my slackware 3.6, linux 2.2.1
When I try to run it, it seems to be OK on the console, but checking the
log files (messages), it said "select: bad file number". I don't see a
"dhcpd" when I do ps after i try starting it, and dhcpcd's can't
connect. I am sure I'm not running bootpd.
My dhcpd.conf:
server-identifier rwu.pudges.net;

option domain-name "rwu.pudges.net";
option routers 192.168.1.1;

This is because you cannot login as root directly.
create a dummy user on the linux machine,
then telnet and login as dummy. You can then
do a su command to switch user to root.

Hi !
I have recently upgraded to 2.2.1 but the IP aliases that I set up in the
old kernel are lost..
While recompiling..I did not find an option to have IP aliasing as a module
like in 2.0.36 compile..
I tried to use insmod /lib/modules/2.0.36/net/ipv4/ip_alias.o but as
expected it says that it is from an old kernel..
I have tried everything I knew..Please Please Please wil someone help me..
Please reply direct to chottabhoot(at)usa.net

Darn.
Do you have any idea what else could have gone wrong?
And one more thing: People told me that .procmailrc practically works
like a normal shell script. Does that mean that a line like

this test.txt be created? If not, is there another way to make sure that
.procmailrc is really invoked?

I used Netscape _Navigator_ 3.04 (from my Caldera 1.1 distro, kernel
2.0.29) for more than a year with nary a problem. About 3 months ago, I
picked up Netscape _Navigator_ (NOT Communicator), and it has worked
fairly well. From time to time, it gets slow and jerky, or as it did
last night, complains of low memory. It has even hung a few times, but
not often.
Considering that I keep my system up 24/7, and keep Netscape up the same
amount, and generally keep open 10-12 programs/xterms running in about 15
windows using pager with 4 virtual 1280x1024 screens, I'm pretty
satisfied.

Yup.

Hmmm, what do you mean by that?
Anyway, you should put the following line in /etc/lilo.conf:
append = "ether=0,0,eth1 ether=0,0,eth2 ether=0,0,eth3"
Note: some old versions of LILO were picky about spaces, so put in two (as
above).
Alternately, you can use the 3c509 driver as a module.

Subject: installing via PLIP
Date: 17 Feb 1999 05:45:13 GMT
has anyone had any luck installing RH 5.2 over PLIP and NFS? I'm trying to
get linux on my 486 66 cyrix laptop, which of course has no cdrom drive.
I found out that the RH install is supposed to be able to install over
PLIP. So I tried it out, but no luck.
I have gotten PLIP to work on the laptop using Toms Boot and Root mini
Linux distro, and I have done an NFS mount over it... but the RH install
chokes.
the error is something like RPC-time out.
now when I tried it with the mini Linux distro, I set it up wrong at
first...but an error at least showed up in the logs of my desktop. Under
the RH install the two computers don't even talk.
I figured I'd try to trick it, and just do the mount manually from another
console...but the install hangs very soon after I insert the second disk.
here is what I have ruled out after much testing:
both the floppies are good.
the disk drive is good.
the cable and paralell ports are good.
My NFS setup is good.
My hard drive on the laptop is too small to just copy the files over (300 MB)
what am I missing??
here is the setup:
the main computer:
IP 192.168.93.1
netmask 255.255.255.0
mount directory /burner
the laptop:
IP 192.168.93.2
netmask 255.255.255.0
directory that is trying to be mounted /burner/RedHat
thanks in advance for any help
Mike
PS I am more than willing to try any other distro that supports this type
of install.

Subject: ppp0 up and running, but can't ping beyond the gateway
Dear group,
I've set up ppp in Linux on a number of machines with a variety of
ISPs, but I've never seen this problem:
I just installed RH 5.2 and set up PPP. The modem connects, the PAP
authentication is successful, an IP address is (dynamically) assigned,
by the server. Ifconfig reports that the ppp0 interface is up and
running. It stays up for as long as I like. I can ping the ppp server
of my ISP.
Netstat -nr (or route -n) shows a host route to the server AND a
default gateway route to the server. (PPP is executed with the
defaultroute option). However, I can't ping anything else besides the
server :(
The FAQs and HOWTOs suggest that my ISP's server may not be
forwarding IP packets, but then the documentation suggests that the test
of this is to connect with a different OS, like windows. But with
windows, everything works fine.
Any suggestions? I will gladly supply the debugging output, and
copies of the scripts, if that would be useful. Also, if I am advised
to contact my ISP ( it is IBM globalnetwork), that is fine, but what do
I ask them (specifically, what do I say to get past the receptionist who
tells me "we don't support linux")?
Thanks,
Rob Thompson
