I had the same problem. There was an earlier posting which showed how to
solve this. It involved adding some aliases to conf.modules. Check back to
earlier postings in this NG. Now, if somebody could only tell me why my eth0
died with kernel 2.2.9.
When I compile it as a module and try to activate it, it says something like
"Init_module() device busy" If I don't compile it as a module it still doesn't
work. I wonder if there is a hidden lock file somewhere...

btw: netatalk is not included in the distribution.
I get an error on starting afpd, stating "Segmentation fault (core dumped)"

It should only take about 5 lines in your /etc/printcap and one line in
/etc/hosts, depending on what kind of printer it is (whether it needs
Ghostscript, etc). The Printing-HOWTO has an example of how to print to
an HP printserver (it shouldn't be too much different).
http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/HOWTO/Printing-HOWTO-11.html#ss11.5
Follow their example with your settings. The one line in /etc/hosts would
be your association of your printer to a hostname, such as:
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx printer.hostname.com (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the
print server's IP address).
Also, you might want to read the actual lpd documentation:
http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/printing.html

I am using SuSE 6.0 with 2.2.9, and am having problems with my 3c509 card.
The ethernet card would not initialize on startup, and when I recompiled it as a
module and load it manual I get a message like: "init_module() device or
resource busy" ifconfig shows nothing is there. My PPP connection works
normally. I could downgrade back to 2.2.7 but that is a brain dead thing to do,
and I would really like to try and find what happened. I haven't been able to
solve it yet. Maybe over the (long) weekend...

You should avoid using x=0 and x=255, as those addresses are reserved.
x=0 is used to refer to the network itself (ie, such as the 192.168.0.0/24
class-C network) as a unit, and x=255 is the broadcast address, which is how
to send data to every machine on that network at once.
x=1 is not reserved, but is very commonly used for the local router.

If I get this right, you want to form an unsolicited TCP connection to a
machine that is invisible (on account of masquerading) from the (normal)
routed Internet (whether the packets actually flow on public or private
segments. At first blush, this is doomed, because you cannot form an
address that will reach the AIX machine. Any packet that you send into
the Linux box with address 192.168.1.100 will be dumped unceremoniously
on the trash heap because those addresses are being mapped to and from
sockets on the Linux-box address, and there is no mapping generally in
effect
for the AIX box until it initiates a connection.
However, I think that all is not lost. If you have any spare IP subnets
that
you can burn, you could overlay one on eth1, give the AIX box a secondary
IP address (if it can cope with having 2 IP addresses), and then put in the
necessary filtering stuff so that only your workstation can have access.

Can you force your Sun client to connect using nfs version 2 instead

If your network connection is this critical, you should start looking at
some secondary providers, and use a multi-homed system.

I've managed to finally get my 765L talking to my Auto 16/4 PCMCIA Token
Ring card under RedHat 6.0 by assimilating various of the tips on the net.
Thanks to everyone for their advice.
The odd part of the story is that I needed to use pcmcia 3.0.5 versions of
modules/{i82365.[ch],ricoh.h} in order to make things work. I don't know
enough about pcmcia to explain the source differences or what troubles
this might cause.
Briefly, the installation goes like this:
1. install rh6.0
2. reboot
3. compile and install linux 2.2.9 kernel, w/ Token Ring support and Tropic
chipset as module
4. reboot
5. untar pcmcia-cs-3.0.10
replace pcmcia-cs-3.0.10/modules/{i82365.[ch],ricoh.h} with
pcmcia-cs-3.0.5 counterparts
I didn't use the tr225 or bsm patches floating around, mostly because
I inferred that they'd been rolled into 2.2.9 and 3.0.10 code, but I
might be wrong.
6. make config; make all; make install
7. commend out high memory, like this:
include memory 0xc0000-0xfffff, #, memory 0xa0000000-0xa0ffffff
8. reboot
I'll be happy to provide more info as necessary.

Date: Fri, 21 May 1999 13:09:12 -0800
I am running RedHat 5.2 and I am having some troubles with my network
connection. I can get it to work, but I have to activate it manually. I
would like to get it to work at boot time.
I know that to insert the module for my card the command is:
insmod /lib/modules/2.0.36-0.7/net/rtl8139.o
then, I type:
inetd (I'm not sure what this does, but it works)
Then, from an xterm window I can start netcfg and look at all of my devices
and connections. I have an eth0 set up for DHCP and I have it set to
activate at boot time. If I hit the activate button there, it is activated,
but at reboot it is not.
I presume that I need to put that above two commands in some init files, but
I don't know where to put them to load them at the correct time. I tried
rc.local, but I'm sure that is too late for what I need because rc.local is
the last thing executed I think.
If someone could please help me figure out what commands to put in which
init scripts it would be helpful.
Is there a way from the command line to say "activate a certain network
connection"
Thank you,

Subject: PPP connection from linux to Zyxel router Prestige 153X problem
Date: Fri, 21 May 1999 19:58:43 +0800
Hi,
I can dial in to the Prestige 153X router from windows, but not from
linux box. Does any one ever do this? I am using RedHat 5.2, Linux kernel
2.0.36, pppd 2.3.5.
1. If I use PAP auth, router shows user name at menu 24.1 (WAN 3 status
changes from idle -> ring -> answer -> username -> drop) and linux says "No
response to PAP request".
2. If I disable auth at both ends, router status changes from idle ->
ring -> answer -> LCP Up ->drop and linux says "IPCP: timeout sending
Config-Requests". If I turn on kdebug on linux, I get messages like "ppp:
frame with bad fcs, excess = 6d31".
Can anyone give me some help? Thanks.

Could you please expound on that statement?

I don't use ptys myself at the moment, because I don't yet have a high
enough version of libc. This may be your problem; type 'ls
/lib/libc-*.so', and if the version number is less than 2.0.9x then
you can't use ptys.
Otherwise, /usr/src/linux/Documentation/Changes (assuming your kernel
source tree is stored in /usr/src/linux) contains instructions for
configuring Unix98 pty support.

Of course it can be written in Perl. Now if you'd said nroff,
that would be more challenging... -- Larry Wall
