I am having a lot of problems getting ip forwarding to work with COL
2.2. I am hoping someone can help. :) Okay, I checked three things. Is
support built into the kernel? Yes. Is 1 in ip_forward? Yes. Are there
any chains that would stop access to and from the computer? No. (This
is a security risk. I am using it only on a test network.) Here are the
files that are relavent:

Okay, so I followed the directions in ipmasq-HOWTO for problem
resolution. Here are the results:
1. from masq'd machine, ping another machine:
works
2. ping self and assigned address (ppp):
ping localhost works
ping ppp ip address given by isp works
3. from masq'd machine, ping gateway
works
4. from masq'd machine, ping gateway's ppp assigned address
doesn't work (i deleted the ip address below)

Any clues? Thanks for any help.

Not even the other end of the wire (192.121.1.1 in the log)? If you can
ping that then the problem might be as simple as a missing pppd defaultroute
option.
You should check a couple of other things, but I can't tell you how to make
the changes using xdialppp.
The chat expect/send script needs some tuning and there are more comments
about that below. It's not clear to me whether the login/password was
successful or not even though PPP on both sides started.
The other thing is whether you need to configure for PAP authentication.
You may need this even with the ISP presenting login/password prompts.
If the suggestions regarding the chat scripting don't work then it would
be a good idea to try configuring for PAP, perhaps without the chat
login/password scripting.

: May 26 08:28:31 localhost chat[382]: MindSpring Dialup Service^M
: May 26 08:28:31 localhost chat[382]: ^M
The ^M in the line above is the result of the chat expect/send CONNECT ''
or similar (the send (^M) a few lines up) . It's a carriage return and
sometimes confuses the ISP. This can be avoided by using CONNECT '\d\c'
instead which inserts a second of delay and supresses sending the carriage
return.

Your chat script looks for "netserv" and then sends the login string. What
it should do is to look for "login:", which is the ISP's login prompt.
The PPP session log looked good except you may not have succeeded in
authenticating and so are unable to do anything. If you can add VJ header
compression (pppd rejected it) it would be a good thing, although not
having it isn't fatal.

List "nis" before "files" in your /etc/nsswitch.conf on the passwd and
shadow lines. Putting your root password in the NIS maps makes it
easier to get a hold of your "encrypted" root password and crack it.

details on setting up samba, ipchain(ipmasq).

The "224" line is just a moderately bogus attempt at multicast
forwarding. Windoze always does this. It can be safely ignored.
You're right that the first line is a default route.

There are two parts to the problem -- packets have to get out to the
network and they have to get back. As is often the case with routing
problems, it looks like you've got the first part covered, but the
second part is missing.

Hmm. One thing to check on the Linux box:
cat /proc/net/arp
You should see a.b.65.100 in there. If not, then add "proxyarp" to
the ppp connection.
Next, you'll need to get access to a.b.64.1 and find out why it's not
sending messages back to a.b.65.100. It's possible that the subnet
mask is not actually /20 on that box ...
