You didn't mention the eth0 device which would be your physical ethernet
card. Does this exist?
Taking out the lo interface will prevent pinging yourself - looking at
the route table may help

Hi,
Try the command nslookup. It can be used to query nameservers.

Oops, that's not right. Those are CCP messages not LCP and the

Nice error message, eh?
I had a similar problem, similar setup (RH5.2). Aparently there was a
change in smbmount when it moved with respect to the kernel. I have an
old e-mail somewhere that addresses it. This is what I do in a script,
(adapted to what you wrote above) which you can play with:
export PATH=$PATH:/usr/sbin
sudo smbmount //bubba/d <password> -c 'mount /mnt -u <uid.for.files> -g
<gid.for.files>'
It works great for me, but YMMV.

Hm... I've been giving the name "titanic" to the last bigger server, I
had to set up. /etc/motd says "the unsinkable server"...
Just guess what, the thing was crashing hard the first time it was put

Sometimes this goes on for hours, about every minute or so. It seems to
increase dramatically if I have netscape running, although that is only
an observation and I haven't been able to verify that netscape is
actually involved. Other than filling up my logs this wouldn't really
be that much of a bother, except I can't connect to my ISP about 8 times
out of 10; I see a "protocol rejected" message while I'm waiting for an
IP and then nothing. If I keep dialing in, I eventually connect and get
an IP. So, any idea what is causing this many unsupported protocols and
what can I do about it? And is there any listing of some sort of what
these protocols (0x31, 0x5a22, etc...) are?
Thanks

Hi,
I'm trying to set up a linux Proxy server. It's a relatively old
Digital 486 DX2 66 w/ 16mb ram, and a 6.4GB Quantum Fireball EIDE HD.
The machine is set up fine with Redhat 5.2 and a 3com 3c509 NIC. My
trouble comes when I try to get the second card working. The second
card is an Intel EtherExpress PRO/10+. I've turned off the plug'n'pray,
and I've try various IRQ/IO combinations. I've also tried the eexpress,
eepro, and eepro100 drivers. None of them can get this card to work.
I'm flat out of ideas. So, here's where you all come in. First, does
anyone know outright what I can do to get this card working, and second,
if not, does anyone know the full compiler command to compile a new
driver without rebuilding all the modules? For some reason, when I put
the new driver in the drivers/net directory and do a make clean dep
modules install_modules, the 3com card no longer works, and the Intel
card still doesn't work. Please help.

some distros (like redhat) disable remote root login by default, since
it may be a security threat. You can change that default (I don't
recommend it) by editing the /etc/security/access.conf (correct me if
I'm wrong on this) file.

if at all possable, the easy way to do this would be to compile the
kernel without modules. If not, you would have to install the modules
manually, AFAIK.

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
=========================================================================
DosLinux is a relatively small distribution of the linux operating
system.
DosLinux is a LOOP version of Linux and will use the standard linux
ext2 filesystem.
It can be installed on an existing dos system i.e. msdos, pcdos,
drdos, and win95/98 in dos mode.
There's no need to create a partition or repartition to install
doslinux, because it will just be a file i.e. C:\doslinux\system\-
doslinux.img on your existing dos system.
Read DosLinux.README for further info at the site below.
You'll need about 40 megabytes of free space on your dos system
to unpack doslinux.
DosLinux doesn't include X windows or the gcc compiler, but these
are easy to install on doslinux, just read /usr/doc/guides/
install.X.guide and gcc-doslinux after you install doslinux.
DosLinux has support for IDE, SCSI, & PS/2 hard drives, Ethernet cards,
IDE & SCSI cdrom drives, Tcp/ip networking i.e. SLIP/PPP, Floppy drives,
Serial & Non serial mice, Parallel printers, PNP, PCMCIA, Firewall & IP
Masquerading, Token Ring.
If you're not sure if DosLinux will boot on your system get 'setup.exe'
and 'zimage.exe', try to boot the small linux system if it boots then
get doslnx78.exe.
If you can't boot the small linux system there's no point getting
doslnx78.exe.
You need 'setup.exe' anyway to setup DosLinux, you don't have to get it
again any future versions of DosLinux will use the same 'setup.exe'.
Read HowTo.Install.DosLinux at the site below.
The DosLinux kernel is version: 2.2.1
DosLinux is a 100% libc6 system.
You need at least a 386 CPU and 8MB of RAM = Memory to use DosLinux.

Which user should own the /Maildir and subdirectories in /etc/skel?

I did create it as wolber with the maildirmake.

I am not absolutley sure because today I tried to change the following line in the
qmail-pop3d.init from
CHKPASS="/usr/local/bin/checkpassword" # how to authenticate users
# wb 22.2 von checkpassword auf /usr/local/bin/qmail/checkpassword geaendert.
to something where I crippled the checkpassword to check so that it couldnt be found
and got the same message.

Apart from the apparant lack of firewall capabilities and the facts
that it is probably not extensively tested for security issues and
that it is still in beta (thanks go to the author nat32 for a useful
product for home use, but it is not ready for mission critical
business use).
Additionally, the NT TCP/IP stack is not the most stable or reliable
against attack. Linux will do more for less money and run on low grade
equipment that cause NT to run very slow, whilst offering greater
security.
The main reason not to use Linux would be if it is hard to support.
for example if there is no Unix skills base in the company. Even if
this the case, a dedicated hardware based firewall would be a better
solution than NT. Alternatively, look at a software based product
which provides it own operating system (e.g. http://www.gnatbox.com).

There is a file /etc/securegettys, here you would have to add the
terminals for in-telneting (AFAIK ttyp0,ttyp1,...), but you should not
do that for security reasons if your linux box is connected to the world
outside.
Log in as normal user and 'su' instead.

Subject: Samba limits
Date: Mon, 22 Feb 1999 21:13:37 GMT
I was just wondering, is there any web sites, faqs, etc with advice on
setting up large Samba servers? I'm looking for things like, just how many
users to put onto certain machines. Perhaps if there's experience out there
like, "I have a P2/400 with 256MB ram, blah blah that handles X concurrent
number of users just fine/needs more power."
Thanks
