Andry,

I did set up the 192.168.1.in-addr.arpa zone.

Without that zone, the whole thing is dead. With it, I can use
127.0.0.1 as a nameserver, but not 192.168.1.254.

        Another bunch of weirdnesses:

I can make it "work" if I user 127.0.0.1 as the name server. When I
do, other computers on the (192.168.1.0) net can use it on
192.168.1.254. But the server can't.

The first line in /etc/host.conf is "order hosts bind". But the name
server completely ignores /etc/hosts. I put some names in there for it
to go look for, and it never finds them. I get a "host failed"
message. I have to put address records in '/var/named/named.local' if I
want to resolve local addresses.

I added my ISP's DNS servers to the end of the search.
/etc/resolv.conf has "nameserver 127.0.0.1" followed by my ISP's two
servers. But I can't resolve _some_ addresses. For example, it can
resolve 'www.microsoft.com', but it CAN'T resolve 'home.microsoft.com'.
Once again, the 'host failed' message

I think I'm missing something REAL basic here. Either that, or the
darn thing's broke.

Gary.

PS for Alex: Yes, I do have the entry in /etc/hosts. Perhaps the
problem is with the resolver ignoring /etc/hosts?

PPS: In /var/log/messages, I see lines: named[330]: ns_forw:
sendto([128.9.0.107].53): Operation not permitted
Four different IP addresses seem to be popular.

PPPS: 192.168.1.254 is on eth0. eth1 has the IP my ISP assigned me.
The proxy seems pretty transparent so far, except for this name problem.

Hello!

I order to get rid of the machine name in sent messages you need to add your
domain name to the DM variable in /etc/sendmail.cf file.

It's called mail domain masquerading.

Just search for caps DM (Example: DMmydom.com)

Good luck!

Start by checking your netmask.

A 1 in the netmask says that this bit of the IP address is the same as the rest of the
IP addresses on the local
network.

For example, the the two machines are 192.168.3.16 and 192.168.3.25, the netmask would
be 255.255.255.0

If the two machines are 10.0.5.15 and 10.0.128.12, the netmask would be 255.255.0.0

The numbers between the dots are 8-bit numbers, 0-255.

I had a similar problem with a RH 5.2 with Intel EE Pro. Look on the
following site:
http://cesdis1.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/
There you will find both code ofr drivers and code to diagnose the
card, in case something goes wrong. Actually, I myself had to give the
idea of Intel card up and go with 3Com 950x series, but maybe you'll
have more luck. All you should have to do after compiling the module
and putting it in the appropriate directory (if you wish) is change the
alias in the file /etc/conf.modules, something like

alias eth0 eep10pci

or something to that effect, assumin that Caldera uses the same module
configuration files as RH

Hello all,

Since I upgraded my Caldera OpenLinux version to 1.2, and converted my
passwordfile to a shadowed passwordfile, I can't backup my server
through Arcserve (running on a Netware server) anymore.
The uagent keeps on refusing the password. I guess this has something to
do with uagent not recognizing the shadowed password.
Does anybody know how I can solve this problem, or where to get more
information about this subject......

Tanx!

Nope, nothing. I was using only ATZ ATDTxxxxxxx until just a couple of
days ago, now I'm using ATZ AT L1 DTxxxxxxx so my modem isn't so loud.

My belief is that my phone lines just have really, really crappy
quality. When I had the second line put in they had to come back twice,
muttering something about "being at the end of the line" and "not having
enough circuits available" or some such thing. Sigh. Doesn't work any
better with my original phone line, though.

I do get some strange error at boot time that _seems_ to indicate some
IRQ conflict, although I don't think there is one based on what I know
about my cards. I have an internal Zoom V90, and I'm using isapnp to
set it up. The error doesn't appear in my /var/log/messages log or from
dmesg, though, and it scrolls off the screen so I'm not quite sure how
to capture it :-/.

It runs OK, but _never_ connects above 28.8 and rarely even that high.

Did you read the IP-Masquerade mini HOWTO? It is all in there and very
easy. It came with your redhat distribution and should be on the CD. If you
installed it, it is in /usr/doc somewhere.

If you dont have it it is here:

Ok, correct me if I am wrong:

When I have one IP and want to still have multiple hosts on that IP I
have to set up name based virtual hosts. And server software (Apache or
smthn) decides which web pages to show according the name by which they
were requested. Right? But I still have to register www2.somedom.com. I
just can't go around making up my own hostnames, putting them all on the
same IP and hope the world will see them. They won't, unless they are
registered names. I assumed that this is not the case. If not - my
mistake.

Subject: setting up Linux as a router
Date: 27 May 1999 02:31:36 GMT

Hello,

I need your assistance in finding a way to configure Linux as a router. The
following is what I am trying to do...

I have an embedded system running an RTOS (pSOS) PPP daemon. The RTOS PPP
daemon communicates with a Linux PC through a direct serial connection. On the
Linux side, the Linux PPP daemon processes PPP communiciations. I can perform
PPP communications between the Linux PC and the embedded system without
problems. Each side of the link have their respective IP addresses (for TCP/IP
networking).

Now I want to configure the Linux PC as a router to allow other PCs on the
network to access the embedded system using TCP/IP (through the Linux PC).
Likewise, I want to configure the Linux PC as a router to allow the embedded
system to access other PCs on the network (through the Linux PC). Thus, the
setup would allow routing TCP/IP packets between an Ethernet data link layer
interface and a PPP data link layer interface in the Linux PC.

Your assistance will be most appreciated.

Would prefer to run SunOS-4.1.1 +U1 on a ext2 filesystem on

Would also like to run NetBSD 1.4 as well (I have the space)

Need hints, links, guess's or what have you.
