Any hints ?

Hi

I want to connect a Windows PC to a Novell File Server. I configured a
Linux-PC as a =

Dialin-Server and with TCP/IP everything works fine (PPP over ISDN with
ipppd). Then
I gave the ipppd parameters for IPX and switched the TCP/IP off. But now
when
the Win95 Client tries to connect they stop. If you look in the log
files you see
that it received the node-numbers and the network-number and then it
loops forever
: It receives the node-numbers and the network-number again and again.

The Linux System is a SuSE 6.0.

Run portmap before mounting remote fs.

Subject: SAMBA & Win95 Logon authentication
Date: Thu, 27 May 1999 20:22:26 GMT

Hi,
I'm trying to set samba up to authenticate win 95 client logons. I'm
having troubles since I don't know on which side things are set up
properly. At the moment I can get my 95 clients to bring up a message
from the logon which says "No Domain Controller was available to
authenticate the password, some net services may be unavailable" (or
similar) I'm sure that I've got samba set up properly and I've tinkered
with the 95 network settings (wins enabled, NT domain logon enabled).
Just in case it helps I've included the global section of my smb.conf.
(Other possibility is I need new samba & PDC but I thought that was for NT
clients)

Many Thanks,

James

Being a newbie to Linux, I just following the mini-howto for IP
Masque, and Unreal piped through it instantly. Are you connected via
dial-up or a LAN? You can try tweaking your firewall setup to see if
it ain't stopping your gaming. Many new tools have popped up to
replace the IP Masque modules that are needed for some things, i.e.
Quake. IPPORTFW, IPMASQADM, IPAUTOFW, REDIR, UDPRED, and other Port
Forwarding tools can be read about at:
http://members.home.net/ipmasq/ipmasq-HOWTO-1.65-6.html#ss6.8

Unreal is the only game I tried, and it worked flawlessly. I'm sure I
won't be so lucky with my other games. I got a load of games and I'll
let you know which ones work and don't.

A little clarification is in order:
the protocol 'NetBeui' is not routable. 'Netbeui' and 'NetBIOS' are not the
same thing. SMB over TCP/IP routinely encapsulates NetBIOS within the IP packet
and is therefore routed.

It would be interesting to know if the SAMBA server works when attached to the
same subnet as the Win95 client.

Hi!

1. Can I ,logged in as a standard user, do a smbmount?

2. I was never able to do a smbmount, not even as root. Each server
tells me that it couldn't identify me. This is so frustrating, because
with Win98 you're able to click into these shares like nothing!!

Many thanks, Heiko Senner (Germany)

If you want to know a bit more about smbmount, look at section 4.14 on
my web-page. It does not matter what filesystem NT uses - all exports
are the same.

Try mount -t vfat /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy

With the -t vfat option, you define the filesystem you want to use,
in this case vfat (win95/98 filesystem).

I have some spare RJ45 network cards and was wondering whether I could
use these in any way to avoid having to buy a hub for a small hobby
beowulf system. Basically, can I have two network cards per system and
set up a daisy chain affair with crossover cables? I know this isn't
the easiest way of going about it but I'm just curious about a use for
presently unused equipment. If this crazy idea could work then what
performance issues will I face?

Using Kernel: 2.0.33 or better:

Put this in your ipfw script:

ipautofw -A -r udp 1410 1450 -h www.xxx.yyy.zzz
ipautofw -A -r tcp 1410 1450 -h www.xxx.yyy.zzz

www.xxx.yyy.zzz is the ip of the computer playing the game.

The Game actually opens a variety of ports depending number of players. I'm
not sure if this works for the ZONE AOE players for for (IRC - EFNET) #AOE
players this works fine if you have your Linux box as headend and your
Window boxes are behind it.

Happy gaming!

Subject: RedHat 5.2 install. SMB and FTP options dont work.
Date: Fri, 28 May 1999 17:51:25 +0530

I am trying to install Red Hat Linux 5.2 using the following options:

SMB option:

I have shared the cdrom on a WIN98 machine giving read only access to
everyone. The IP address of this machine is 192.168.103.50. and the name is
xyz. After using supplemental disk and partitioning i configured my network
adapter. For network configuration i chose the following options:

IP Address: 192.168.103.144
Netmask: 255.255.255.0 (same as that of WIN98 machine)
Default Gateway: 192.168.103.144
Primary Nameserver: 192.168.103.144

Domain Name: pqr
Host Name: abc.pqr
Secondary Name Server: None
Tertiary Name Server: None

SMB Server Name: xyz
Share Volume: cdrom
Account Name: None
Password: None

After this configuration i get the message "I could not mount that directory
from the server". The only way to come out of this is Ctrl+Alt+Del.

Ping to Linux machine gives the following output:

Pinging 192.168.103.144 with 32 bytes of data:

What could be wrong?

FTP option:

I have a WINNT 4.0 machine (Name: def, IP address 192.168.103.254, Subnet
Mask 255.255.255.0) which is a FTP server. Its cdrom is made a Virtual
Directory with name /cdrom. I have allowed read only anonymous access to
this.

After using supplemental disk and partitioning i configured my network
adapter. For network configuration i chose the following options this time:

IP Address: 192.168.103.135
Netmask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.103.135
Primary Nameserver: 192.168.103.135

Domain Name: pqr
Host Name: abc.pqr
Secondary Name Server: None
Tertiary Name Server: None

FTP Site Name: 192.168.103.254
Red Hat Directory: cdrom
i didnt choose the option "use non-anonymous FTP or a Proxy Server"

After this i was prompted for the list of packages to install and i chose
everything.

I got the message "I cannot get file
cdrom/RedHat/RPMS/setup-1.9.2-1.noarch.rpm: File not found on Server". When
i clicked OK i got the message "I m having trouble getting %s. Should i keep
trying?" I selected No. This time i got the message "I cannot get file
cdrom/RedHat/RPMS/filesystem-1.3.2-3.noarch.rpm: File not found on Server".
And so on. The only way to come out of this is Ctrl+Alt+Del.

When i used the follwing command "dir setup*.*" on my cdrom using my WINNT
4.0 machine i got the following list of files:
setup-1.9
setuptool-1.0-1

and the command "dir file*.*" gave me the following results:
file-3.25-2
filesystem-1.3
fileutils-3.16-10

When i use "ftp 192.168.103.254" from my WIN98 machine which i mentioned in
the SMB option i can login using the following information:
User: anonymous
Password: none
Here i can browse all my directories. I used the following command "cd
/cdrom/redhat/rpms" and it worked well. It also displays the list of rpm
packages using the command ls. But here also the same names are displayed
which i saw using the command "dir *.*" on my WINNT machine.

Pinging my Linux machine from my WINNT machine gives the following result:

Pinging 192.168.103.135 with 32 bytes of data:

If you have a static IP (as most @Home users do) hard code yer IP numbers
instead of using DHCPCD. You can get all your settings from your Windows box
