Date: Fri, 28 May 1999 23:12:13 +0200
Hello,
Today I discovered that a setting named PROMISC(ious?) is activated on one
of my ethernet cards. Since then there seems to be a continueous flow of
packets over this card (I check that with wmifs) and my system *seems* to
be slower. I don't know but could that setting slow down performance? How
do I deactivate it? (I already tried: ifconfig eth down/up; ifconfig
-allmulti; ./init.d/network restart.)
Other thing: when I shutdown the network 'stuff'
(/etc/rc.d/init.d/network stop) and restart it again I get the error
SIOCADDRT: Invalid argument. What is the a problem here? If so, how to
fix it?
(Brings me to another (off-topic) question: I tried to use the (bash) cmd
'set -v' and 'set -x' to output the read lines and exec cmd's in the hope
it would 'debug' the network script, but that didn't work. Is there a
(simple) way to 'debug' a script?)

I was wondering if there was a better way to accomplish the following.
I need to reconfigure my laptop's network configuration (preferably
without re-booting) depending on which location I am at. Here is what I
am currently doing...
ifconfig eth0 down
echo myhost > /etc/HOSTNAME
echo 127.0.0.1 localhost > /etc/hosts
echo 10.15.22.23 myhost.mydomain myhost >> /etc/hosts
echo domain mydomain > /etc/resolv.conf
echo search mydomain >> /etc/resolv.conf
echo nameserver 10.15.1.99 >> /etc/resolv.conf
echo nameserver 10.15.1.98 >> /etc/resolv.conf
ifconfig eth0 10.15.22.25 netmask 255.255.0.0 up
route add default gw 10.15.1.1 eth0
This seems to be pretty straight forward and does allow me to quickly
switch from one network to another with my laptop. But sometimes i have
to re-boot for the edits to the /etc files to 'stick'.
Is there a better way???

Subject: DNS caching
Date: Fri, 28 May 1999 21:23:01 GMT
I was wondering if it's possible to have a nameserver not cache an IP
address. I have a dynamic IP from my ISP and am having a problem
dynamically mapping a hostname from my friends domain to it.
It works.. but all the other nameservers on the net are caching the IP
address... and when I log on again with a different IP, nameservers are
using the cached one instead.
Is there a flag I can set in named to stop other servers from caching?
Any ideas?
Thanks,
-Gut

Well, too all who answered:
The problem wasn't with Linux, it was related to the fact that I did not RESET
my cable-modem between my last boot with NT and my Linux installation/reboots.
It seems, for some reason, that when one DHCP request has been made (by NT or
Linux), all other requests must ask for the same address or else the modem
need to be reset (this is only true for LINUX, NT works fine anyway).
For me, it means that after booting NT, I have to reset the cable-modem in
order for it to work with Linux. Once booted in Linux, I can reboot Linux as
many times as I want without having to reset the modem. If I reboot to NT, I
have to reset the modem before booting back in Linux...
It seems like the change of IP address is not fully handled by Linux. Let's
say you boot in NT and get address 1.2.3.4, when you boot in Linux, PUMP
or dhcpcd request the address that it last requested by looking in its cache,
if this address is 5.6.7.8 then I get the address (eth0 is configured OK) but
it looks like the modem was not informed and the routing doesn't work (my
packets do not come back to me nor can my ISP ping me with 5.6.7.8). If I
reset the modem then ifdown/ifup everything works fine! After that, rebooting
in Linux works OK because 5.6.7.8 is always requested by dhcpcd (unless you
clear the cache).
The weird thing is that NT seems to "update" the modem properly because
booting back in NT works without resetting the modem...
There's a good chance I'm missing something here but this is what I found so
far... Any comments would be appreciated.
BTW, this is true for both PUMP and dhcpcd. I was running PUMP (base RH 6.0
install) and it was working. Since there is an update avail. for PUMP I
installed it but after that PUMP would not work!!! I couldn't get an IP from
my ISP anymore (duh!). So in light of what you guys suggested, I installed
dhcpcd and modified the ifup/ifdown scripts. Now it works.
Because I want my hostname and the "search" field in resolv.conf to be
dynamically set depending on my IP, I also changed ifup-post and
network-functions.
Thanks to all who answered!

Subject: Name Resolution Problem

I've been trying to link up my Linux box to the school LAN via ethernet
and I can't get my Linux box to access resources by domain name (ie. ping
computer.school.edu). I can access anything via IP number, and nslookup
works fine. I'm running through a gateway, and a traceroute has the first
packet stall at the gateway for 1200 ms, after which it turns around all
packets in 4 ms time. Furthermore, I noticed that I'm getting a really
high packet error rate when I run ifconfig.
I don't know if any of these are related, but I can't seem to figure out
what's wrong after reading all of the HOWTO's I can think of.
Details on my box:
Pentium 120 laptop running 2.2.9
PCMCIA 10/100 ethernet card
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Chad

Try to disable PUMP and install dhcpcd. On my system the base version of PUMP
worked, the update didn't and dhcpcd is working just fine. I don't know much
about ADSL modems but if you dual-boot, you might want to reset your modem
before booting back in Linux...
I suggest you read the "RH 6.0 + Cable Modem using DHCP..." thread... A few
things where pointed out that might help you.
Good luck!

Thanks, although it didn't come in time to prevent a waste of brainwidth
(I like that) but did come in time so I didn't have to admit that I
didn't know quite how the errors came to be generated but that it looked
like a really nasty problem.
There should be more pppd messages somewhere, here it's /var/log/debug.
The /etc/syslog.conf directs the messages to various files so if
you can't find them then look in there to see where various things
are going. Should there be no other pppd messages in any of the files,
then configure /etc/syslog.conf along the lines suggested by Bill Unruh.
I'd still like to see them with kdebug 7 so we'll know whether there
are fcs errors present. Once that is established one way or the other
the kdebug 7 can be removed since it does make things harder to read.
I am inclined to agree with Bill since you solved the case of the
strange errors, the next step should be configuring for PAP or CHAP
or both. Once you've done it for PAP then CHAP is easy, you just copy
the /etc/ppp/pap-secrets file to /etc/ppp/chap-secrets.

I have the same problem with a ISA MT5634ZPX MultiTech card that appears
well in pnpdump. But I have no idea how to setup it there: which IRQ, I/O,
port to chose? Should I use the same as in Windows?

Remote logins (meaning that you are not sitting at the console), are
disabled for user ids under 10. Since the root user id is 0, remote
access for the root user is not allowed. I don't believe there is anyway
to change this. You can, if you know the root password, do the
following:
1)Login in using a normal userid
2)type the command : 'su root'
3)you will be prompted for the root password. Enter the password and you
are given root permissions. This means you can install, uninstall, start
/sbin programs, do everything the root can do, except check the root
email. You have to be sitting at the console logged in as root to read
and check root email.
I hope this helps!!

I have a somewhat similer prob. Linux server w/3com509b in it and
winbox with a Linksys card. In order to connect the 3com HAS to be
first online. If the win boots first, no net. Don't know if this
helps or is your prob, but you might try firing up the server and
getting it started, at leat to login point, before turning on
workstations.
Solution live with it, or get a new card to replace 3com heheh I am
