Can you ping your Linux box from the windows box? If you haven't setup
a DNS server, and you've just added hostnames to /etc/hosts on the Linux
boxes then you'll have to do the same for your windows boxes.
Create/edit c:\Windows\hosts with something like:

192.168.1.1 thelinuxbox

If this isn't your problem, you'll have to supply more information on
you setup if you want better answers.

Greetings,

I'm not sure if this is in the right place but any advice is welcome.
I have a win98 machine with a dial-up adapter, and a D-Link 220
ISA adapter, both with it's own TCP/IP protocols bound to it. The
machine's IP is set, and it's seen by the linux box (ping comes back
good), and I can ftp and telnet to the linux box (through the 5 port
hub). However, which machine is it that I'm to tweak for dns resolving?
My /etc/hosts and /etc/resolv.conf both look good to me and I'm
wondering if I'm missing something. Thanks for any help and if it's
a windows problem, I'm just going to shoot myself for asking this
in a linux domain, hehe...

Subject: NFS machines can't see each other
Date: Sat, 21 Aug 1999 23:39:28 -0700

I have been spending all my time on this problem for over a week now and
still can't get my system working.

I have 2 machines set up for NFS, each connected to a hub. When the
machines are booted up, the link lights for each one is on. When I try to
mount a filesystem from either machine to the other, the "packet" light
flashes, indicating there is something being sent from the querying machine,
but it inevitably times out with a message that simply says "can't connect
to server".

Both machines have their "/etc/exports" files set up to export their root
directories to the world as read/write with root priveliges. I have tried
the following:

Using a domain
using no domain
using hostnames
using no hostnames, only IP addresses for each machine
various combinations of the above

In every case where I used hostnames and/or domains, I set up the /etc/hosts
file to show the appropriate hosts.

I have tried switching to a new hub, with the same results.

I have tried completely re-installing Linux on each box with ONLY NFS on it,
just to make sure there was nothing conflicting or interfering with it.
Same results.

I bought the O'Reilly book "Linux Network Administrator's Guide", and tried
to scrupulously follow the instructions in it (which were about the same as
the NFS How To's instructions, which I also have read numerous times). No
difference.

Can anyone give me any ideas? In case you're wondering, the IP addresses
I'm giving the machines are 10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.3

I never attempted to set up DNS on either machine because I am only setting
up a few machines and I am perfectly happy to use IP addresses, plus I don't
want the complications. I am already frustrated enough just trying to do
something that, from all the documentation I have read, ought to be a walk
in the park.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am desperately in need of getting
this network working, and I have already wasted FAR too much time trying to
figure it out. I am getting close to abandoning Linux altogether. Windows
may suck in a lot of ways, but at least when it works, it works.

Well, it's good that you got the ``mt" in there - that stands for
muiltithreaded. But for the record, all the distributed.net clients are
statically linked. Therefore, it doesn't matter if you download libc5,
glibc2, or glibc2.1. Unfortunately this is a bad distributed.net
policy, and will only serve to confuse newbies. Don't get into the
habit of blindly downloading binaries! It will work from
distributed.net, but that's about it - everywhere else, you should match
the libc versions.

remember if you setup your samba server in Linux PDC, it won't replicate
your password file (SAM), however Linux can do this.

It is better than Microsoft Windows_NT such as fast, stable, no_bs_

I heard about a problem sounding like this a while back.
I think it was on a USR 33.6 Sportster, I can't remember for sure, but
the fix was an init string you had to feed it before using it to prevent
this from happening.

If thats it you hopefully can look up the initialization string by using
a good search engine and the right key words.

My questions:

2) What is this "remote message: ^F" doing there ?
3) Where can I get more info about the different message types used by

Hmmm...I can think of a couple of things to check on....

- Are you sure that both NICs are working? Try pinging out from one to the
other and see if you get a reply that way, i.e.:
            tara # ping 192.168.0.3
            64 bytes from 192.168.0.3: icmp_seq=0 ttl=255 time=0.4 ms
            64 bytes from 192.168.0.3: icmp_seq=1 ttl=255 time=0.3 ms

- If you are trying to connect using hostnames, is /etc/hosts configured
properly to reflect the hostnames in your private network?

- Is nfsd and everything else starting properly?

- What does your /etc/exports file look like? Is it configured properly?

I'm trying to set up Apache to serve html versions of HOWTOs to
the local net. I can't seem to find them with a web browser.

The default setup for Apache puts the "DocumentRoot" in
/var/lib/httpd/htdocs. So I've created a directory in that
directory called html. I'd think that I could access that
with: http://<server>/howto/ ... But, Nooo...

In fact, I put the index to the htmls in INDEX.html (well, that
was already there), and included in srm.conf:
   DirectoryIndex index.html INDEX.html

But that doesn't help (nor can I get there with
   http://<server>/howto/INDEX.html

I also tried :
   Alias /howto/ /var/lib/httpd/htdocs/howto/

Still no joy...

The server does work, and I can access pages in a user home
directory within public_html. And I can see the test page in
  /var/lib/httpd/htdocs

Any suggestions?

Your makedbm is missing some shared libraries (files ending in .so) -
perhaps the version of it doesn't match the rest of your install?

You can configure the default list of shared libraries using ldconfig,
or configure additional library directories for a given environment by
setting LD_LIBRARY_PATH.

Try "ldd /usr/libexec/yp/makedbm" which will tell you what library is
missing.

If you installed this setup from a standard packaged distribution (Red
Hat, SuSe, etc.) try reinstalling the NIS server package from the
distribution.

One recourse if this doesn't work is to get the makedbm sources and
recompile on your system.

As far as I'm concerned, you can't do much better than the "Linux LAN &
Internet Firewall Security Site" at http://rlz.ne.mediaone.net/linux/
There's an automated tool there to build your rc.firewall script to set up
your system.

Thanks for your idea! Actually I didn't change anything, 'cause I'm very sure
that the IP-FORWARD is enabled when I rebuilt the kernel.

Now I update the /etc/resolv.conf in my linux workstation, and it works well!

I really don't know why there is NO /etc/resolv.conf in RH6.0? Do u know the
reason?

Thanks again!

It depends on what RR location you have. If you are in the San Diego area,
try http://people.qualcomm.com/karn/rr/ .

http://smaug.fammed.ohio-state.edu/shane/rr/c2c/ used to be a good site, but
it looks like most of the links are broken now....... =(

Subject: Mgetty isnt playing nice...
Date: Sun, 22 Aug 1999 16:54:58 +1000

Hi,

I'm having a few mgetty problems, and although I've done extensive
searching for a fix I can't seem to find where my problem is...

Here's the situation:

I've got a box setup with a RocketPort 16-port serial card running,
devices are ttyR0-ttyR15.

Currently I've only got one device being used with mgetty - ttyR0.

I'm trying to setup autoppp, to answer calls and establish a ppp
session.... this I HAVE done. Here is an excerpt from my logfiles:

Aug 22 13:42:21 asterisk mgetty[982]: data dev=ttyR0, pid=982,
caller='none', conn='57600', name='', cmd='/usr/sbin/pppd', user='/AutoPPP/'
Aug 22 13:42:21 asterisk pppd[982]: pppd 2.3.7 started by a_ppp, uid 0
Aug 22 13:42:21 asterisk pppd[982]: Using interface ppp0
Aug 22 13:42:21 asterisk pppd[982]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyR0
Aug 22 13:42:25 asterisk PAM_pwdb[982]: (ppp) session opened for user obr by
(uid=0)
Aug 22 13:42:25 asterisk pppd[982]: user obr logged in
Aug 22 13:42:25 asterisk kernel: PPP BSD Compression module registered
Aug 22 13:42:25 asterisk kernel: PPP Deflate Compression module registered
Aug 22 13:42:25 asterisk pppd[982]: local IP address 111.111.111.111
Aug 22 13:42:25 asterisk pppd[982]: remote IP address 111.111.111.111
Aug 22 13:42:28 asterisk pppd[982]: CCP terminated by peer
Aug 22 13:42:28 asterisk pppd[982]: Compression disabled by peer.
Aug 22 13:42:34 asterisk mgetty[995]: init chat failed, exiting...: Invalid
argument
Aug 22 13:42:34 asterisk mgetty[995]: failed in mg_init_data, dev=ttyR0,
pid=995

As you can see, 4 seconds after the ppp connection is established mgetty
disconnects the modem...

Here is my setup for mgetty.config:

port ttyR0
  debug 4
  init-chat "" \d\d\d+++\d\d\dAT&FL0M0 OK
# statistics-chat "" AT OK ATI2 OK
  statistics-file /tmp/statistics.2864
  modem-type data

I've got no idea why the connection is dropping, has anyone seen this error
before?

Thanks,

Owen B-R
