I don't know what type of card you have but if you do ifconfig -a at a
terminal screen,
you should see the information in the nic. If all that info is correct (as
supplied by your ISP)
then you should try a ping to your DNS or your gateway(closer). The numbers
are supplied
by your ISP. If you can ping them, you are on the net.

I'm working on installing a linux based network at my son's elementary
school. Our ISP has supplied a Cisco 2610 router for the T1 line. The
connection between the ISP NOC and our side of the T1 is in place and
the ISP has setup the router to use HDLC.
I can ping a domain name (ie. ping yahoo.com returns the ip address and
sequential pings)...However, I can not browse via lynx or NS for that
matter. Telnet does not work either. Is using HDLC for the WAN
protocol a problem with Linux? From the router to my test linux box is
just a straight 10BaseT ethernet connection. This ISP claims that HDLC
is not the problem...something in the Linux setup wrong (though if I can
ping out to a domain name on the net, I at least know TCP/IP and DNS is
working). I can even ping the linux test box from another independent
dial-up connection. I'm at a loss right now on solutions.
The ISP tech support won't help me because it's a hi-cap line and
unfortunately, the school does not have the money budgeted for extra ISP
consulting services. I'm not very experienced with Cisco/T1 technology,
just Linux and ISDN so any help you guys can provide would be
appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Default gateway should be a.b.64.1 This the default on thorn. You can
add the default to Winbox by the following steps:
" route delete 0.0.0.0"
Note: Winbox will use only the first default 0.0.0.0 it finds in the route
table.
Type route print and route delete until there are no more 0.0.0.0 entries.
Then insert the default as the router I.P. address:
"route add a.b.64.1 mask 255.255.254.0 <your ppp I.P address>
Run winipcfg to see that it agrees.
Alternatively, and simpler, is to set DUN to "use default gateway on remote
host"
because the default gateway is correct on thorn below.

One other thing needed on thorn is a permanent published proxyarp arp table
entry.
Type arp -a on thorn: You need to see a line that has your remote ppp I.P
address and the Hardware address of thorns Ethernet Network Network adapter.
You can acheive this by using the proxyarp command in the ppp options or
command line.
Note: On redhat 5.2 this did not seem to work so a script ip-up.local was
used to insert the proxyarp entry and ip-down.local used to remove it.
/etc/ppp/ip-up.local

# add published proxy arp entry
exec /sbin/arp -s $5 -D eth0 pub

My ISP gives me a block of IP addresses to use. I have to divide them
into sub-nets and set up routing to 192.168.1.64/255.255.255.248 through
gateway 192.168.1.72 (a PPP connection to a router). When I put following
entry in /etc/gateways:
net 192.168.1.64 gateway 192.168.1.72 metric 2 active
routed then adds entry to routing-table:
Destination Gateway Mask
192.168.1.64 192.168.1.72 255.255.255.255
It is a host instead of net. It seems the remote router is not supplying
the correct netmask or I have to manually specify it somewhere. Does anyone
know how to solve this? Thanks.

When trying on a Solaris 2.6 machine to mount a volume exported by a PC
running RedHat 6.0, I get
Permission denied.
But I can mount that same volume all day long on a NeXT machine.
Further, when trying on a Windows NT machine to mount an SMB share exported
by the same PC, I get

I am running RH5.2 and apache server. I created a folder link in the
default web directory(/home/httpd/html). However, I can't access the
files in it. It's driving me insane. I keep on getting the forbidden
error. This folder link is to a directory in the /usr hierarchy. I gave
this /usr... folder directory permissions in access.conf. I also used
chmod on the files in the /usr..hierarchy. Is there anything else I can
do, please help.
How do I change the default document root without getting the
forbidden error whenever I try to access it? What is the full procedure?
Does anyone recommend any resources to help me, books or otherwise. The
faqs and how-tos are hopelessly inadequate...thanks

I also agree with the reply but one more thing.... is the MB bios set for PCI
card irq's or ISA's?
Set the MB bios to auto, it will detect the card and set the irq for you on
bootup.

I have been unsuccessfully trying to get diald working on my Caldera 1.2
setup. I have read howtos, messed with conf files, tried various options,
read manuals, and nothing seems to make it work.
Here is what happens. I first got ppp to work, so I know I have a
functional chat-script. When I use that script for diald, I read in the
log that it is sending commands to the modem and never receives a response.
Eventually, it times out, waits a bit, and tries again with the same
result. It is like the modem isn't there.
I used the basic diald.conf example from the manual for dynamic ppp, used
the same modem commands from my ppp-options file, and used the same
chat-script from my ppp connection. I've tried combinations of using an
empty options file to keeping the file intact. I'm stuck.
Anyone care to attempt to help me? I will post any configuration files if
they would help.

Hello. I have set up my linux box with dhcp for my Cable connection.
The dhcp works for the IP Address but I doesn't configure the Gateway.
and if you could send me the fix or ho to fix it. I used the network
config in the control-panel to set up the dhcp. I was woundering if
anyone knew what the problem was.

The reason why only the loopback interface shows when you type in ifconfig is

I am thinking of creating a small local network using NIS, and I have
discovered that:
a) I will need the rpc.portmap program
b) My current rpc.portmap binary is about 2 years old, since it came
with my original Slackware distribution.
Can someone tell me where I can find the most recent source code for
this program (and presumably the other rpc programs like it)? I have
already checked ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/util/net and found NIS and
NIS+, and a lot of "ancient" programs on
metlab.unc.edu/pub/linux/system/network, but nothing suggested itself.

The demand dialing part did not appear until version 2.3.0 of
pppd. Part of the ppp code needs to be patched into the kernel.
There is a script in the pppd source code that does this.
I have upgraded my pppd to version 2.3.7 I believe with a 2.0.36
kernel on a Slackware system. Even though the demand dialing
part is available, I have just stuck with diald.

The de4x5... is NOT the correct driver for that chipset. Tulip is.
To help get the right driver going try putting this in your modules.coonf file.
alias ethx tulip io=0x6400 irq=x
the io is whatever the card is really at. Worked for me. :0

I'm a newbie to firewalls, but I can't figure this one out.
Running RedHat 6.0 with a 2.2.9 kernel trying to set up a firewall between
the networks 144.92.92.0 and 192.168.1.0. All I'm trying to do right now is get
forwarding to work; I'll deal with restricting later. However, I can't even get
forwarding to work.
I believe I have everything set up: the two network cards, the gateway set
correctly for the outside world on the firewall, and the firewall set up as my
gateway on my internal machine. However, if I try to telnet anywhere other than
192.168.1.* from the internal machine, it hangs..... IP forwarding, firewalling,
etc, has all been turned on in the kernel, and IPV4 forwarding is on.
Replies by email would be greatly appreciated.
On the firewall, here is my routing table:
