Subject: network failed, and "ifconfig","demsg" gave me this info
Date: Sun, 22 Aug 1999 00:33:04 -0700

Hi,

I tried hard to make my network work. But I can't. :(

1. When I try "ifconfig eth0" command, it gave me this:.
************************************************
Link encap: Ethernet HWaddr 00:80:AD:41:FB:c5
UNspec addr: 171.66.102.47..(those addres are correct)
BROCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
        Collisions:0 txqeeuel en:100
     Interrupt:11 Base address:0xe400
************************************************

2. And, the message of "demsg" command regarding the networking part is as
follows:
************************************************
eth0: ASIX AX88140 at 0xe400, 80 ad 41 fb c5, IRQ 11
eth0: EEPROM default media type Autosense
eth0: Index #0-Media MII (#11) described by a 21140 MII PHY(1) block
eth0: MII transceiver found at MDIO address 1, config 1000 status 782d
eth0: Adversting 01e1 on PHY 1, previously adversting 05e1
**************************************************

Hope this info is relevant and useful for you to analyze my problem.

It seems The kernel does recognize my card (right?). Network works perfectly
fine if I boot with other OS on the same machine. I am frustrated and
desperate.

Thanks you so much. You're a life saver :)

Subject: stale NFS file handle
Date: Sun, 22 Aug 1999 16:24:47 +1000

hi ...

I have a server and 2 workstations (clients). The server only moves files
from workstation1 to workstation2 and vice versa. However, i really get a
slow respond that my program only works if the time interval of data
exchange no less than 3 seconds.
Otherwise, i get this error message " cp: cannot create regular file: stale
NFS file handle"!

please help .... here, i have the communication diagram between server,
workstation and A/D card for reference.

Subject: Squid and Masquerading

Hi,

is possible to run Squid on one Server and Masquerading on an other?
I have a network with 250 win-clients and one machine connected to the
internet via
dialup. Now i installed Squid on another server but the clients cant reach
the internet over the Proxy.
Is there any point in squid.conf to tell that the server with
dialup-connection is another?
thanks in advance

If you have two NICs in your Linux box, you can configure it to run IP
Masquerading and just use one IP address. You could then give your extra IP
address back and save a few bucks per month.

Subject: Problem with Nics
Date: Sun, 22 Aug 1999 13:35:03 +0200

I got an old 486 and installed linux on it. The machine has a not better
specified Ne2000 compatible ISA-Card (not PnP) and a D-Link 530CT-D. Now the
problem.

If I set up the cards to use the internal Network everything works fine: I
can ping each machine in the network. The Network is a 10base2 net.

When I try to set up one of the two nics to access the internet trough the
cablemodem i have, the internal network on the other still works fine, but
there is no way to get out trough the nic on the cablemodem. I've tried all
the possible configurations and nothing seems to work. I even tried to
reinstall the machine setting up only one nic (the Ne2000) and it still
doesn't work.

This is what ifconfig prints out for eth0:
eth0

dmesg prints the following for the nic
NE*000 ethercard probe at 0x300: 00 00 e8 1d b4 50

Does someone know whats going on here?

Jeff,

The "net time" command uses nmb/smb services (Samba) as a transport for asking
your linux box to return its current time. I verified this by temporarily
shutting down samba on my linux box. Then, when I issued "net time", I got the
same error message as you. (see below)

Hi all !

I'm using a linux RedHat 5.2 server with IP-aliasing on a class C range
of adresses.

I need to have a traffic report by ip every day or week or month.

Are there any free products for that or did someone developped a such
utility ?

Thanks in advance,

Manu
