I tried installing Red Hat Linux v6.0 on a Pentium PC for the first
time.
I made scripts for PPP as shown on manual, but couldn't make it.
The error messages from /var/log/messages are

modprobe: can't locate module ppp-compress-21
modprobe: can't locate module ppp-compress-26
modprobe: can't locate module ppp-compress-24

How can I fix it and make PPP connection ? Your help would be greatly
appreciated.

Hi,

 I need some help please/..

 I am setting up my system to log on the internet every 3 hours and
execute sendmail and fetchmail to send and recieve my email and then
distribute it others users as well..

 I am using the system wide crontab file for the schduling..

 The problem I am facing now. is how can I make my internet connection
close after the mail has been downloaded.

 Is there a way it can disconnect if there is no activity ? or as soon
as sendmail and fetchmail finsih it disconects.. ? I can figure out how
to manage that. I dont want to set a time limit for disconnection
because we could recieve large files sometimes and may need more time to

download than other days.. ( ISP charges for time online.. therefore i
want to the computer to be online just enough so it may download the
mail and then disconect..

 Thanks.

 Saqr :)

What did I miss? I've read every HOW-TO on PPP. As you can see from
the log I've got pppd configured, as far as I can tell my ISP doesn't
use the form of authentication that my script below uses. Do i simply
need to send my ISP a BREAK to get the prompt that I keep hearing
about. When I use minicom to dial, as soon as I get the CONNECT it
starts writing a bunch of stuff like in the log below. A carriage
return won't break you out.

I really think I'm just not understanding what my ISP is doing, my old
ISP I remember used Xylogics switches and they would prompt for a login:
passwd: this just throws out the protocol.. *grin* i guess...

Log below...

Och, die Eleganz wre durchaus betrchtlich. Nur mu man halt erst
einmal fr alle Maschinen im LAN einen OSPF-fhigen Routing-Daemon
finden und installieren.

Here it is

;
; /etc/smb.conf
;
; Sample configuration file for the Samba suite for Debian GNU/Linux
;
; Please see the manual page for smb.conf for detailed description of
;       every parameter.
;

[global]
   printing = bsd
   printcap name = /etc/printcap
   load printers = yes
   guest account = nobody
   invalid users = root

; "security = user" is always a good idea. This will require a Unix
account
; in this server for every user accessing the server.
   security = user

; Change this for the workgroup your Samba server will part of
   workgroup = LEUNG

   server string = %h server (Samba %v)

; This socket options really speed up Samba under Linux, according to my
;       own tests.
   socket options = IPTOS_LOWDELAY TCP_NODELAY SO_SNDBUF=4096
SO_RCVBUF=4096

; Passwords are encrypted by default. This way the latest Windows 95
and NT
; clients can connect to the Samba server with no problems.
   encrypt passwords = yes

; It's always a good idea to use a WINS server. If you want this server
; to be the WINS server for your network change the following
parameter
; to "yes". Otherwise leave it as "no" and specify your WINS
server
; below (note: only one Samba server can be the WINS server).
; Read BROWSING.txt for more details.
   wins support = no

; If this server is not the WINS server then specify who is it and
uncomment
;       next line.
;   wins server = 172.16.0.10

; Please read BROWSING.txt and set the next four parameters according
; to your network setup. There is no valid default so they are
commented
;       out.
;   os level = 0
;   domain master = no
;   local master = no
;   preferred master = no

; What naming service and in what order should we use to resolve host
names

   name resolve order = lmhosts host wins bcast

; This will prevent nmbd to search for NetBIOS names through DNS.
   dns proxy = no

; Name mangling options

   preserve case = yes
   short preserve case = yes

; This boolean parameter controlls whether Samba attempts to sync. the
Unix
; password with the SMB password when the encrypted SMB password
in the
;       /etc/samba/smbpasswd file is changed.
   unix password sync = false

; For Unix password sync. to work on a Debian GNU/Linux system, the
following
; parameters must be set (thanks to Culus for pointing this out):
   passwd program = /usr/bin/passwd %u
   passwd chat = *New\spassword:* %n\n *Re-enter\snew\spassword:* %n\n
*Password\schanged.* .

; The following parameter is useful only if you have the linpopup
package
; installed. The samba maintainer and the linpopup maintainer are
; working to ease installation and configuration of linpopup and
samba.
;   message command = /bin/sh -c '/usr/bin/linpopup "%f" "%m" %s; rm %
s' &

; The default maximum log file size is 5 MBytes. That's too big so this
; next parameter sets it to 1 MByte. Currently, Samba rotates log
; files (/var/log/{smb,nmb} in Debian) when these files reach
1000 KBytes.
; A better solution would be to have Samba rotate the log file
upon
; reception of a signal, but for now on, we have to live with
this.

1. IP masquerading is a simple form of a NAT (network address translation).
It allows for a network to appear as 1 host to another network. Mostly used
to allow a private network with non-internet-routable IPs to share a single
internet
routable IP.

2. IP forwarding allows the system to act as a router, passing on IP packets
that
have a different destination. IP forwarding is required with IP
masquerading.

3. Port forwarding operates at the TCP level rather than the IP level.
It forwards all request to a port (i.e. IP:80) to another system and/or
port.
This allows a system to sit behind a firewall and still provide services
that are
reachable from the internet.

/etc/profile is the system-wide profile which _everybody_ runs.

try setting the executable (+x) permission for /root/.profile
(I'm not sure if this is needed, but it shouldn't hurt if it isn't)

hope this helps,

the smbmount command changed entirely. Smbmount will now ask for your
username and passwd (if you didn't specify it at the command prompt) and
then leave you at a prompt
just type the mount command at this prompt ex: to mount a wfw share on mount
point /net:
smb> mount /net
You will then recieve the normal linux prompt once again and your wfw share
will be mounted on /net

Hope this helps ;o)

One thing you should do is to replace the chat expect/send CONNECT ''
with CONNECT '\d\c' which inserts a one-second delay and suppresses
the carriage return that's otherwise sent and sometimes confuses an
ISP.

You can configure for PAP authentication which is very common among ISPs;
you'll need to remove the chat login/password expect sends for this but
keeping the CONNECT expect/send suggested above. Add the pppd option
"name Your_ISP_Login_Name" and configure a /etc/ppp/pap-secrets with
the single line

Your_ISP_Login_Name             *               Your_ISP_Password

with the obvious substiutions. Copy /etc/ppp/pap-secrets to
/etc/ppp/chap-secrets and you've configured for CHAP as well.

That errno field in a structure should be renamed to something else
as there is a #define errno somewhere in the headers.

Also, version 0.16 needs up to patch level 5 before it compiles on redhat
system. You'll run into other problems, too if you don't.

Look at the contrib.redhat.com see if there is a rpm version you can
download. It has been there fore ages, including patch level 5.

Also check http://diald.unix.ch for the current (I thing) home page for diald.

Subject: Are two NIC:s better than one...?

At home I have the following setup

A Linux-machine running as file and printer-server and cable modem. This
machine is in a closet so I need to display X to the other ones.
A Win NT machine at which I work. So to this machine I want a fast
connection.
I also have a laptop and printer connected to the network. These two (and the
hub) are 10Mb.

The question is whether I will gain from having a dedicated 100Mb (hubless)
connection between the Linux and the Win NT machine. It's too expensive to go
100Mb all the way. Will I notice any difference between a 10Mb and 100Mb
network? I'm usually the anly one loading the network. It will also take some
extra cabling across the apartment..

Regards
/Stefan

Linux- machine:
Cyrix686 w 64M
RTL8029 (10Mb) NIC for cable modem
RTL8139 (10/100Mb) NIC for internal network

Win NT-machine:

Yeah I saw that. The following TCP ports on the firewall must be open:
        8995 - 11000
        28800 - 28900

My ipchains setup is as follows:

ipchains -P forward DENY
ipchains -A forward -j MASQ -s 192.168.1.0/24 -d 0.0.0.0/0

I don't do anything else with incoming or outgoing packets. I am assuming that
if you don't deny, then the ports are open. Is that correct?

By the way, I could see these connections being made using ipchains -M -L.

If I have to explicitly do autofw for these ports, my script would be:

ipmasqadm autofw -F
ipmasqadm autofw -A -r udp 2300 2400 -c tcp 47624
ipmasqadm autofw -A -r tcp 2300 2400 -c tcp 47624
ipmasqadm autofw -A -r tcp 8995 11000 -c tcp 47624
ipmasqadm autofw -A -r tcp 28800 28900 -c tcp 47624

Maybe I'll give this a try and see if it works any better.

This smacks of some kind of problems with your script headers. The FIRST
THING that your script must output should be: (perl extract)

print 'Content-type: text/html\n\n';

Notice the two '\n' characters. These two linefeeds must be present. If you
have already done this, then check your apache logs. They should be in
/var/log/httpd or similar. There should be a file called error.log or
something. Apache generously logs all such errors, so this should give you a
lead.

If the log says something like "could execute myscript.pl", check that your
path to the perl libraries in the script are correct, by typing

which perl

this should produce output like

/usr/bin/perl

but its not the same on all systems!! With the output above, the first line
in your script should read

#!/usr/bin/perl

Failing all this, zip your script and apache error log up and mail them to
me and I'll try to have a look at them.

I got that when I first started. It was because I was trying to log in as
"root". What you have to do is make a new account on the Linux box and log
into that. Then, once you're logged on, type "su". It will ask you for the
password to the "root" account. Type that in and you're free to do whatever
you want on the system....
