Subject: Problems configuring my modem

Hey,
I hope someone can help me with my modem problem:

I configured my modem (TARGA, 56.6) and a PPP-Network-Connection with
YaST (SuSE 6.0). When I try to connect to the Internet with ppp-up
generic nothing happens. In /var/log/messages you can find this:

        ... pppd[775]: pppd 2.3.5 started by root uid 0
        ... pppd[775]: tcgetattr: Input/ Output error (5)
        ... ... Exit.

Also when I try to use the modem with minicom there is no response: No
dialtone, no LEDs blinking!!

Perhaps it is just a little thing, but I am using Linux just for a short
time, so I do not know, what to do.

Thanx,
 Jan

I have a similar problem. A large FTP fails after only a few seconds (ncftp
gives a "failed read" error). Doesn't matter what FTP client I'm using:
Netscape 4.5, ncftp, standard ftp. This is a RedHat 5.0/piecewise 5.2...

FTP works normally from Win-NT -- does anyone have any idea why it wouldn't
work from linux? As far as I know this has been a problem since the
original installation. Any FTP download bigger than a meg or so will freeze
most of the time; sometimes it will eventually go through, but I haven't
noticed any pattern yet.

thanks for any help

you are talking about two different things !!

1) imap/pop2/pop3 allows you to receive mail from your linuxmachine
youve installed it and it seems to work !

2) sendmail
this one receives mail and sends mail on the linuxmachine
(and include the smtp-part)
Im sure youve installed it when you installed redhat52

possible problems :

sendmail is misconfigured (look to http://www.harker.com/webgencf/)

your network is misconfigured so one of the two machines cannot locate
the other.

I have found that the 3c905 cards do not do autosense very well in Linux.
The simple solution to this is to boot off of a dos disk, run the 3com
config utility provided with the card, and manually set the line speed to
100mb/s, and possibly the duplex setting as well if you require full duplex.
This *should* solve your problem...it has worked for me in several cases
where the card could not autosense it was hooked up to a full duplex link.

Good Luck

I'm using wu-2.4.2 anonymous ftp server and I'm having a weird problem. I
need the contents of my /pub directory to be hidden (so they need to know the
subdir) so I set it to 751. Works great, but here is the weird part. Every
now and then pub's group gets changed to "ftp" and the contents of the pub
directory become visible. I change it back to "root" and all is well again.
I'd love to know how/why it's getting changed! Any leads appreciated!

Run the TCP/IP stack in loopback mode only (so the only address or hardware
is internal to 127.0.0.1) and it's effectively a standalone machine. Get rid
of all the network services from however RedHat does it's init (I use SuSE
and would run the machine at a different runlevel).

Hi, I am trying to install pptp tunneling and http , https , and ftp, mail,
news tunneling on a linux box so that my internal network can publish their
services. I have setup a linux with 5.2 redhat using 2.0.36 kernel, and I
enabled masqurade and firewall support, and ipautofw support. I read the
how-to such as http://www-
plateau.cs.berkeley.edu/people/chaffee/linux_pptp.html and tried to install
the pptp patch and ipautofw patch for the 2.0.36 kernel, it compiled and
doesn't work. I looked at it the patching process again and got a fresh
2.0.36 kernel and applied pptp patch, and then applied ipportfw patch, looked
carefully and found the ipportfw doesn't appear in the "make menuconfig" so I
got a new 2.0.36 again and this time I applied the ipportfw patch and then
pptp patch, run "make menuconfig" again, this time the pptp entry doesn't
appear in the network options entry. I read more and realized that ipautofw
maybe equivalent to ipportfw , so I got a fresh 2.0.36 kernel again and
applied pptp patch only , enabled masqurade and pptp and ipautofw, installed
kerkel, reboot machine, follow the HOW-to instruction, enabled the masqurade,
dialed internet, the masqurade worked fine, I can ping internet from my
internal machine, but then I issued the ipautofw command, I checked
/proc/net/ip_autofw and did see 2 new entry are inserted , I want my dial up
machine's port 80 to be forward into my internal machine.( I have disabled my
linux box's own httpd, so there is no port 80 conflict). now I tried to
connect from internet to my linux box and hope to get to my internel machine,
oops, it doesn't work! I tried kernel 2.2.1, went through the same process,
doesn't work either. I read the how-to and it claimed the 2.0.37 kernel
should incorporate the patches, I searched the internet and didn't find the
2.0.37 kernel. Frustrated, I labored for 2 days and got nothing done. wonder
if somebody has better luck than I do. I searched the news group and
somebody claimed using squid may be able to get the tunnel work, I tried to
read the squid manual and realized it is for caching , not for the purpose I
want. wonder if somebody can lend me a hand and save my poor head. Any one
who can tell me the detailed process of working box will be welcome. as far
as I can see I need the following: linux kernel, patch command script,

and it seems to have to be the correct version, anyone who has a working box,
can you tell me
how ?
Thanks!

Well, sortof. I don't mind using the ip addresses for now, and it's only
a lone win95 box that's on the network with the linux box. However, I was
wondring if I needed to put the win95 ip address somewhere in my linux
config files so that linux knows what IP addresses are there.

I tried it out today, and it seems to work. However, I'm having a couople
of problems on the win95 side:
1) dial-up networking pops up all the time, but cancelling it continues to
   use linux as the "host".
2) it's slow (response time is 1-2 seconds)

I'll search around the newsgroup a bit more...I'm sure it's here
somewhere. But don't let that stop you from responding! :)

J,

Use setserial to reconfigure your serial ports.

You may also have to initialize the card, if it is a PNP card. There is PNP
support for linux, and it mostly works. I have one machine with PNP modem and
network card that works fine. I have not yet tried 2 network cards in linux, but
I know people who have it working.

On my main machine at home I have 3 serial ports in operation. I had to use
setserial to get the configuration to work. Linux, like most Intel-based OS's,
defaults to a configuration that has 2 serial ports preconfigured. One of those
is most likely interfering with your setup.

I have an older p166 with RH 5.2

Installed are two nics ( 1 Netgear PCI and 1 3com 3c509 isa. ) Due to the
hardware configuration ( scsi, etc ) the netgear nic works like a champ but
the 3com will not activate. I have the 3com set on IO:210 IRQ 3. I know
this should conflict with the serial. But I have no modem and disabled at
the BIOS the serial ports.

This config works fine for Win95 Osr but not for linux. In RH I have setup the
card under the kernal tool and it appears under the network management tool.
However, I can not activate it, nor does it appear in the boot messages.

Please any suggestions. Is there some default in the RH kernel for serial
ports at IRQ 3/5 that is blocking the card? What else could I try, I have no
other available ports.

Worst case I will just put the proxy server under Win95 and scrubb
linux....which hurts to say, but hey I have to have this thing working!!!

Is there any way to allow ping between the external computer and the
workstations on the LAN-- if it's running Windows??

I have done it with the external computer running linux (tunneling, as
in NET3-HOWTO). But I can't see how it will be possible to let Windows
machines do it.

Has anybody out there achieved this?

Interesting, because the EQL I used to use to one ISP didn't work that
way at all, the incoming data all came over one modem until there was a
backlog, then the other modem(s) were used.

That may have been a feature of his Livingston Portmaster, but I don't
think balancing is a feature of EQL per se, any packet will be accepted
on any line.

Came across a posting on the Intel user forums that documents the
exact same problem I'm having. The poster on the forum says that the
BNC connection works but can't get the RJ45 connection to work.
Interesting....I've got to give this a try. If it works, that would
explain the illusion of operation but doesn't solve the overall
problem.

I'll keep the info coming as I learn more.
