hi everybody,
I am running a private LAN consist of three Win95 PCs and one RedHat
5.1.
I have a laser printer attached to one of the Win95 PC and it is shared
so that
the other two Win95 can also print on it.
I also have a dot-matrix printer attached to the RedHat PC.
I'm just wondering if it is possible to configure my little personal
network
so that the Win95 PC could access the printer attached to the RedHat.
Or maybe from linux I wish to print on the laser which is attached to
the Win95.
Any of you who've done this before or have any suggestions, i really
would like to hear them...

On the kernel help page, it has been said that Linux is in the process
of switching to autofs from amd. However, in the TODO file of autofs,
there are things such as /net support.
Without the functionality of /net, what has been done for autofs?
Which am I supposed to use, amd or autofs? To me, although
there is autofs-***.rpm in the RedHat-6.0, it is basically not
working.
What is going on?
Thanks for any info.

Subject: exportfs in kernel-level nfsd
Date: 1 Jun 1999 01:47:49 GMT
Hi all,
The manpage for exportfs coming with knfsd (RH 6.0) says:
Invoking exportfs without further options shows the cur-
rent list of exported file systems.
As I understand it, it should dump file ssystems which are available
for NFS-mounting from outside at the moment, i.e. it should more or less
dump the contents of /var/lib/nfs/xtab file
Unfortunately, it seems that instead, it parses /etc/exports file
giving file systems which are "potentially" exported.
Even after doing "exportfs -u -a", the output of "exportfs" is the same
as after "exportfs -a"
Is this a bug or I misunderstood the manpage?
Also, a hint to developers: it would be nice if "exportfs" could
unexport a whole file system in a single step, even if it has
options given for different computers:
Now it seems that if one has /etc/exports:
/export/data host1(...options...) host2(...options...)
/export/data2 host1(...options...) host2(...options...)
doing simply "exportfs -u /export/data2" does not work. One has to
do "exportfs -u host1:/export/data2" and same again for host2.
If there are more different hosts, unexporting a single file system
becomes a hard job. And it seems logical to just unexport all
entries regarding a file system, if it is given without "host:"
prefix.
with best regards, Michal.

You're right those ports are open. It looks like your script is correct
too, or at least the first part. I was told by someone else in a different
newsgroup that you need to recompile the RH6 kernel to get ipmasqadm to
work. It seems that everyone says that whenever something doesn't work too
so I'm not convinced. He did manage to get his games to work however.
Maybe if all else fails I'll try that. If I learn anymore I'll post.....

Hello!
When you are logging on NT domain you use Windows 95 client for Microsoft
Networks.
When you are using Linux workstation it picks up Ip address from DHCP
server, also it can relay on NT based DNS. You can setup a samba client to
share files with your NT machines, but if you are talking about logging in
NT domain and running NT login script and participating in domain as if you
are a WIn95 station... there is no such thing for Linux.
Good luck!

Hugh,
Auto fs works very well under both 2.0.36 and under 2.2.9. I have used
it in both kernels. I am able to load local filesystems, ie removable
drives and cdrom and well as nfs mounts. I am using autofs 3.1.3

Subject: Connect DOS 6.2 LANMAN to SAMBA?
Date: Tue, 01 Jun 1999 02:29:43 GMT
The advice I received earlier about connecting an old IBM Model 80 running
DOS 6.2 to my Linux PC was helpful and I am now able to ping one machine
from the other. However, the DOS box attempts to "log in" and does not find
"any active servers" on the network.
I have added a new user to the Linux server, with the same name, password,
and domain as what I configured on the DOS box. Yes, samba is running and I
have been able to connect another Win95 PC to the Linux server. What I am
forgetting? Thanks for your help.

I have been wondering the same thing, and wondering about buying a switch.
We have 1/2% to 1.5% collisions. One reply here says under 5% is ok,
another says "nearly 100%" is ok.
Is there any consensus on this?

If I recall some of my old knowledge, in order to establish the full
56K connection speed, one half of the connection must be the pure
digital 'modem' (normally found at ISPs, dial-in networking
facilities, etc), and the other half of the connection is the
analog/digital modem (off-the-shelf Brand X available anywhere).
Since it was not stated that you actually have a digital 'modem' rack
running on your server, I am going to assume that the modems in this
dialog are the common off-the-shelf 56K variety. 56K modems cannot
talk 56K to each other, they can only talk 56K to a fully digital
'modem'. If I assumed wrong about your hardware, please accept my
apologies. :)

Subject: Samba Printing
Date: Mon, 31 May 1999 13:45:47 -0230
Hello Folks,
I've read everything I could find on this but ...
I have an NT workstation acting as the spooler for a Net Gear PS110
(probably irrelevant). More importantly, the printer is shared from the NT
workstation. The setup works fine in the NT/Windows environment.
However, when I set up my Linux (RH6) box to print using Samba printing,
using the appropriate share name and the relevant username and password, the
printer prints to the local Linux queue, which flashes the job for a second
and then empties but the job never shows up in the NT queue.
I *can* ping the NT workstation, mount drives there etc...
Any help or a point in the right direction would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Trevor
ps one the printing HOW-TOs refers to a "Printing in Windows Mini-Howto"

I ended up answering my own question. Turns out I needed to read a part of
the howto I didn't think I needed to. All I needed to do was add a few
modules to my kernel at start (which doesn't require a compile) and enable
IPV4 forwarding.
Thanks anyway,
