Have you done the following on your linux box?

echo 1 >/proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward

This enables packet forwarding between the interfaces on the machine.

I would like to mount a remote filesystem from a machine that has an FTP

Read about resolv.conf

It is located in /etc

edit it and add one line (OK , this is minimal, but works)

nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (your isp's dns ip)

Subject: PPP problems from Win NT
Date: Wed, 25 Aug 1999 18:46:30 GMT

I've set up my Linux machine so that I can dial in from my Win NT
machine at home. I am able to establish the connection (NT dial-up tool
dials, verifies user/passwd, then reports that the connection has been
successfully established and that my computer is being "registered on
the network"), but when I try to start an internet program (Netscape,
Internet Explorer, telnet, ping, etc.) the connection doesn't seem to be
there. For instance, Internet Explorer, when asked to access a URL,
will churn for a while and then report that it couldn't establish a
connection.

Why am I having this problem?

Some additional info that may be relevant:

-I've enabled IP forwarding
-I believe I've set TCP/IP as the protocol
-mgetty is set with the AutoPPP option
-ppp is set to accept PAP, refuse CHAP

Thanks for any suggestions...

most likely, your problem is that your netcard isn't an ne2000
compatible card. I have one and discovered by looking at /proc/pci
that it uses the VIA Rhine chipset, not an ne2k chipset.
solution: recompile your kernel with support for rhine cards instead
of ne2k cards.

Is there any way to either get Win boxes to stop making BOOTP reqs or
turn off the logging of said errors? I'm getting /var/log/messages
files in the realm of 25MB from crap like this:

Aug 22 04:02:32 kcad02 dhcpd: BOOTREQUEST from 00:00:94:77:59:13 via
eth0
Aug 22 04:02:32 kcad02 dhcpd: No applicable record for BOOTP host
00:00:94:77:59:13 via eth0

I'm converting every lab (300+ machines) to use DHCP tomorrow, and I
would rather not have my log files getting up there in the 1GB range.

First, check out news.vmware.com.

Second, try host-only-networking in combination with IP-masquerading,=20
it is much more straight-forward to set up and will give you a bit=20
more security.

one of my networks uses the ip 216.46.85.16 as the
network address. the other is 216.32.200.0

I set up a gateway between the 2 networks. however, when
I run routed on the second network, it reports the first
network as having a network address as 216.46.85.0 and
not 216.46.85.16. also, when I run traceroutes to that
network, it either does not work, I get poor performance
(like 3000ms instead of 1), or it does not return

any idea how to fix this?

First things first... Can you ping the Cisco from the rh5.2 box? If not
make sure that the "link" LEDs of your network cards are on. If they aren't
you have the wrong kind of cable between the router and the firewall box.
You need a "crossover" cable for a direct connection.
Routes: the Cisco needs a host route to the firewall's external address and
the firewall needs a default route to the Cisco. The firewall's internal
address should be named as the default router for internal hosts (assuming
there is only one internal subnet and no other internal routers).

Hi,

>From time to time the date of a system I've newly configured with RH6.0
gets set as UTC, thus localtime shows up a -0800 offset. I'm in PDT
timezone.

'date -u' reports the localtime !!!

/etc/sysconfig/clock is set with GMT="no".

I haven't found why there is no $TZ on this system (I'm mostly a HPUX
guy).

I'm using xntp3-5.93-12.i386.rpm installed from the RPMS of the RH6.0
cd.

I've removed linuxconf from the rc. Nothing gets reported in
/var/log/messages but xntpd complaining the jump is to high for him.
Most of the time it kills xntpd.

This time reset happens very randomly and is not related to any
particular user activity on the system nor cronted jobs.

I've never had such a problem on all my RH5.2.

If somebody has a hint on this please let me know, otherwise I'll have
tomorrow to scrap everything and drop that RH6.0 for a - more stable -
5.2.

Thanks a lot,
Thierry

Netscape is the big graphical browser to use and it comes with both
redhat and mandrake. as far as mail clients go, there is one built
into netscape.

if you have trouble with Xwindows, there is LYNX which is a text only
browser you can run from the command line, as well as PINE for email.
pine uses a simple text editor as it's composer and does address books
and file attachments. anyone who uses a shell account on a remote
system is used to pine and lynx. they are easy to figure out plus
there should be manpage entries.
