My recommendation is that you replace squid with socks5, which you can
obtain from http://www.socks.nec.com/ ... . The problem with ICQ and
other proxy servers is that it requires a UDP connection on port 4000 to
the ICQ server. To the best of my knowledge, socks5 is the only proxy
server protocol that will proxy UDP packets. The ICQ clients from
Mirabilis, Inc. are already set up to work with a socks5
proxy/firewall. I'm not so sure about the Linux ICQ clones (kicq, licq,
etc.), although as a general rule, they work better than Mirabilis's ICQ
Java, which tends to be something of a resource hog.
I am not sure, but I don't think that running your own ICQ server will
help as I don't think it will interface properly to the mirabilis server
network.
Hope this helps

Steven,
If you've set up the box to use DHCP (either with linuxconf, control-panel,
netcfg, command line, etc), and the DHCP server is configured to give the
client a default gateway, your RH 6.0 client should have no problem setting up
a default route automatically. If, on the other hand, you've configured your
interface with a static ip address, than you also need to add a default
route. Sometimes you'll get this info from routed if there is a router on the
net advertising RIP packets, but don't count on it. YMMV.

Subject: netcfg, ppp, bellsouth, mindspring
Date: Thu, 03 Jun 1999 14:24:47 GMT
Hi,
I've been using Windows and netcfg on Linux to access mindspring for
quite some time now, with no problems.
I just got a BellSouth account from my employer, it allows me access
behind the firewalls and therefore will let me work from home. When I
added the phonenumber, username, and password to Windows DUN (I dodn't
use any BellSouth installation software), I immediately got access to
BellSouth, and therefore work.
Of course, I don't want to use Windows. The remote machine I log into
is running Irix, so I'd prefer to stay in the Unix environment, even if
I can't run cool graphics stuff.
So the problem is that I configured a second ppp in netcfg, ppp1, and it
won't connect to BellSouth. So what has Windows DUN got on netcfg?
Does Windows automagically handle PAP? Is that what might be going on
here? Of course, I think BellSouth is not happy helping someone using
Linux, so I haven't called.
Anybody out there connected to BellSouth through Linux? I'd appreciate
hearing how, using netcfg or any home grown scripts.
Thanks,
Fred

Another possibility is the lack of a reverser lookup (PTR) record for the
nameserver itself.
Assuming you have an entry like:
primary 0.168.192.in-addr.arpa named.rev
in named.boot
You should have this entry somewhere in your named.rev:
132 IN PTR yourhost.yourdomain.
or possibly
132.0.168.192.in-addr.arpa. IN PTR yourhost.yourdomain.
Notice that in the first example, 132 did not have a trailing dot, so the
domain (from named.boot) for this record gets tacked on. In the second
example, the address is fully qualified (including the nameless root ".") and
therefore the domain doesn't get appended. SCRUTINZE YOUR ZONE FILES HEAVILY
TO ENSURE THAT YOU HAVE THE "."s CORRECT!
Then again, it could be something completely different, in which case,
nevermind.

Hi there,
I've been setting up a firewall that uses ipchains to filter packets,
but I need to log all accesses from the internet net to the external net
as well as vice versa.
I know this is easily achieved using the -l option on the ipchains
rules, BUT is there a way I can get it to just log the first and last
packets passing through...
I'm pretty doubtful that this is possible, it's just that I don't need a
HUGE log of all the traffic going through my firewall..
I know commercial packages provide this functionality...
Thanks for any help...

Ryan,
There's a couple of ways to go about this. You can use DNS for hostname to
ip resolution, and maintain separate user accounts on the different machines
(each machine WILL have a root account), maintain the files on one machine
and use rdist, rcp, or ftp to copy around to the others, or NIS for both
accounts and host resolution.
I would seriously recommend picking up both the O'Reilly System
Administration book and TCP/IP Network Administration books. Alternately,
you might pick up one of the many available Linux administration books.
Either will point you in the right direction.
Good luck!

Hey Bob,
I just recently installed RedHat 6.0 also. I set up a web server with
two nics (ethernet). I was surprised at how easy it was to install the
server. I've never set up a Linux server and I expected some problems.
At any rate everything installed smoothly and I was blessed with a
system that "ran straight out of the box".
The only question I have on the installation you described above is;
did you set your nic (eth0) with an ip address? If you did, did you
ping the address of eth0? If you can ping your nic successfully then
the nic is okay and you'll need to check your network settings with
linuxconf or something.
Cheers
Oly

Try setting security=share. I get strange results when it is set to
user.

Sounds like it might be a simple routing issue. Post the output from
netstat -rn
