Right, I followed an instruction thingy that got me on to the net with pppd
etc... problem is... I can't seem to change pppd so that it can be used by
all users! I've tried chmod a+rx pppd but it didn't work! Any help will be

Don't mess with smbpasswd unless you really have security issues.
Dont use caps in your password. I fought with one username
that couldn't log in. After a couple hours I realized that an upper case
character was being converted to lower case.
To send plain-text pass words go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\VNETSUP and change
the value for EnablePlainTextPassword key to 01 00 00 00 00

hi,
I encountered a problem that I don't understand at all.
It's a problem with my ISP connection, which before worked
just fine for many months.
Here it is:
I CAN
connect to my school (ISP) via a modem, can surve the web (with
Netscape, for example), can read/post to newsgroups like this one,
BUT I CAN'T
withdraw emails from the school, nor can I even telnet it from a terminal
window - in Win95 on the other hand everything remains fine, there both
things work. I also tried telneting to another account - it worked and then
from that account to the one where my email is - it worked, too.
(when trying to get new mail, I get "Server was not found",
when "[denis@localhost denis]$ telnet godzilla.acpub.duke.edu", I get
"godzilla.acpub.duke.edu: Host name lookup failure ")
my linux experiences are driving me crazy, if somebody can please help me
understand what is going on?
thanks a lot.

There can be all kinds of problems connecting to an ISP. In my case, when
I upgraded to a 2.2 kernel I could still connect to my ISP (sirius.com),
but about all I could do was ping! No telnet, no web browsing. Turns out
I had to set 'novj' as an option, another user gave me that tip and saved
me having to go through by trial and error (like he did, I tried to send
him email to thank him profusely, but never decoded his address correctly).
But, even though it works for me, it only works on some numbers with my
ISP. As a matter of fact, it works on the numbers I'm NOT supposed to use
with my V90 modem, with other numbers, I make the connection, login in
with the password, then it kicks me off. The ISP won't help me because
they only offer support for Macs and that other !&%#@ company. I'm on,
but it's half by black magic.

Here's my guess:
There were messages similar to

Mar 7 14:00:40 localhost pppd[980]: Received bad configure-nak/rej: 12
06 00 00 00 01
I *think* this is an unsolicited ConfNak where the ISP hints to pppd
that pppd must agree to send to the ISP with this option. I know that
for CCP the option is Microsoft PCC, aka MS-PCC, aka MPCC, and based on
STAC LZW compression, which is "patented" and so not available to pppd.
Since the TA connection works you needn't worry about it.

I must say that RH 6.0 is much easier to prepare as a firewall than it's
predecessors. I installed RH 6.0 (Kernel 2.2.5). Both Ethernet (PCI
Tulip) adapters were recognized. I ran XCONFIG to configure firewalling
but it was set already. So, no recompile (at least so far).
I'm connected to the Internet through a 256Kb leased line and a Router.
It goes Leased Line <==> CSU/DSU <==> Router <= Ethernet Crossover Cable
=> Linux Firewall <==> Ethernet Hub. When I start the Linux box I can
start and run Netscape with no problems. That verifies the connections
and name servers. When I start the firewall I loose that ability and I
can't access the Internet from any of the network workstations (I never
have. This is a new installation.)
I have turned IP Forwarding on (at least through the graphical network
configuration tool). I'm NATing internal (10.x.x.x) traffic. Here are
my specific questions:
1) Should an "IPCHAINS -F" clear all rules? It doesn't seem to be
since I still can't use the local browser.
2) I should be able to issue three commands to just open the firewall
up (well maybe 4 if you add the flush)
First, input all, Second, output all, Third, NAT (Masq) all.
What would those commands be?
3) Any other suggestions? I'm using static addresses. Obviously step
two is an attempt to at least get it working and then I'll start locking
it down.
Thanks for any help. [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Could you please rephrase the question? I'm not aware of any way
to mount something over ftp. You can _transfer_ things with ftp, and you
can mount remote filesystems with nfs, but AFAIK you can't mount things
with ftp. Unless you mean something entirely different, and I'm misinter-

What are the causes? This never happened when the

Could it be because we are running some services that

Me too. See my earlier post, "PPP hangs on '+++' characters, RH5.1,
kernel 2.0.36". I didn't mention there that I see frame errors also.
I've been messing with this for a few days now and just discovered that
it depends on the terminal server I dial into. I usually connect to a
Livingston Portmaster, but when I connect to a USRobotics server, the
problem goes away, so it seems there is a compatibility issue there.
Could be the modem I suppose, or the ppp implementation, I don't know.
Maybe a clue there for you anyway.
