If someone could send me there gte adsl network setup
for redhat 6.0 (2.2.5-15) I think I could use the example
to make my setup work. I can get all the necessary info
from win98 using winipcfg. But I am uncertain as to what
goes where exactly. Just a bit confused by the fact that
its a dynamic address and not a static address. Also
I am confused by what my hostname should be.
This is in Network Configurator: localhost.localdomain
This is in Winipcfg: Cheyanne.dsl.gtei.net
and is my domain:
dsl.gtei.net
or gtei.net
or gte.net
so you can probably see that a working network setup
would be a great help.

Basicaly put "kppp" is not written for the Red Hat Dastro and will not
work without major configuration change.

The easiest way I've found to setup pppd under RH 5.2 or RH 6.0 is:
  # linuxconf   { either under X or text mode take you pick}
     - Networking
       - Client tasks
          Select PPP/SLIP/PLIP
            Click the ADD button
             Make sure PPP is selected
              Click the Accept button
                Fill in the following fields
                  Phone Number
                  Modem Port
Click the use PAP check button
                  Login Name
                  Password
              Click the Customize button
Select Allow any user (de)activate the interface
           Click the Accept button
Click the quit button on the PPP/SLIP/PLIP page
         Select Name server specification (DNS)
Fill in the Name Server Information asked by this page.
         Click the Accept button
      Click the Quit button
Press enter on the next screen to apply the updates.

Now at the command prompt
$ /sbin/ifup ppp0 will bring up the connection
$ /sbin/ifdown ppp0 will bring down the connection

Under X simplily load the program "usernet" is a simple to use one to
get you started, though there are other choices out there.

RedHat 5.2 and 6.0 versions of the Linux Dastro's are simple enough,
even a MicroS*t user should be able to set it up.
It's a whole lot simpler then MS-Widows to install and setup.

Uhm.. i assume that cal 2.2 ships with samba 2.x.x? Were you using 2.x.x
before? If you were using 1.x.x it uses a default of "user" security, 2.x.x
uses "share".. you will then have to set security = user in your smb.conf

you are in for some work. I just finnished solving the same problem an hour
ago. isa can't be autoprobed or something like that so you have to tell your
module exactly what to look for.

I ended up adding this to /etc/conf.modules
alias eth0 ne
options ne io=0x240

where ne is the driver module and 0x240 is the base address. I had to
download and compile a tool to find out the right base address.

ftp://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/pub/linux/diag/index.html

read this:
http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/HOWTO/Ethernet-HOWTO.html
for all the gorey details

good luck

Hi,
i'm a bit of a newbie on Linux so please bear with me. i have read all
the articles available to me on this newsgroup but cannot find any mention
of setting up a token ring network. Is token ring rarely used in Linux ? My
problem is that we are running a token ring network and i cant get my Linux
box to see any other PC's on the network.

Is there an FAQ out there for setting up a token ring network on Linux ??

How are you accessing the Internet? It sounds unlikely that this is the
fault of your Linux installation. Either your ISP has problems, or...

The Internet can be pretty unreliable. Some hosts simply ignore pings as a
security measure, or they are blocked by firewalls. Routers go down, hosts
go down, and so forth. So do you get the same problems in Windows?

I'm using kppp to connect to my ISP (MindSpring) on a Red Hat 6.0 system;
it works almost flawlessly. I've also successfully used kppp on Red Hat 5.2.

Make sure you have the latest version of kppp (from kdenetwork-1.1.1)
and ppp version 2.3.7 or 2.3.8, and that you configure kppp appropriately
for your ISP.

Hi,
I've got a RH 5.2 system controlling an ISDN internal card, which acts as a
proxy for a LAN.
It dials on demand to the ISP and does its job. The system is always turned
on, but ISDN services are shutted down at evening and turned on again at
morning.
The problem is that after 1,5 - 2 days the system hangs because there are
lots of "ipppd" processes and they lead the system to full resource usage.
The script I use seems to be correct and should not launch more than one
ipppd to control the dial on demand service, and it gets killed at
"/etc/rc.d/init.d/isdn stop".
What could cause so many processes to be active and how can I avoid this?

Kernel is 2.0.36 with recent isdn4kernel upgrade. Isdn4linux-utils are
2.1beta.

Any suggestion?

Ciao,

I got the ne.o module to load and the card is recognized.

now I can't see the network and vise-versa.

eth0 interface is up, it shows up in the routing table, I can ping it from

can't so much as ping any other machine on the network and they can't ping
me.

Any ideas?

Some possible causes:

1. Do you have a UNIX account on the machine (or NIS) so samba knows how to
set your directory permissions?
2. Are both smbd and nmbd running?
3. Do you have an smbpasswd file? (unless security=server)

service is hard to find. Lucky I found one. They have been really nice
to me, so I may as well give them a good plug. Check out
FutureQuest.net. Look at the Community Forums. You will notice that
the owners and administrators visit everyday and answer questions.
Fair price, good options, and the best support out there.

P.S. If you register a domain with them, you will be listed as the
Admin Contact in Internic. You will never have the problem as you did
with Allen.

Subject: browsing samba 2.0 from NT
Date: Mon, 07 Jun 1999 10:47:53 +0200

hi!

with Samba 1.9 and Suse5.2 everything was fine.

switching to Samba 2.0 and Suse 6.1 we cannot see the linux
samba server anymore in the network browser list from NT and
win95 machines.

though we can connect to samba by directy establishing a
connection (through a drive letter thereby specifying user
and password)

we can also find samba with "Find Computer" and then browse
the samba server for a while, but only if at least one connection
by a drive letter is established before.
when the explorer refreshes display the samba server again disapears.

i think the problem has something to do with the nobody guest
account, which is obviously used in the browsing stage. but i
see "nobody" in passwd and it seems to be the same as with
samba 1.9 / suse 5.2.

i'd be glad if anybody could help

Hello could someone tell me where I can get NIC Cards for RedHat 5.2??
I have read the http://www.redhat.com/hardware page.
No luck in finding one of the supported NICs though.
If someone could point me to a page that has supported NICs I would be
very very thankful.
Thanks In Advance.

Subject: useradd problem under SuSe 6.1
Date: 7 Jun 1999 10:03:48 GMT

Hi,

I have a small problem with useradd under SuSe. When I add users the
password isn't encrypted, so when a user tries to login it can't because
the password isn't encrypted in the shadow file, when I use YaST to add
users it is encrypted, but I need to add a lot of users a day and don't
feel much about creating them by hand, so I've written a perl script
which does it for me, the only problem is that useradd doesn't encrypt
the passwords. At first I thought it was because I added users using the
Perl script, but when I use the cmdline I also have the same problem.

Can anyone help me with this?

Subject: Sendmail relaying from other IP networks
Date: Mon, 7 Jun 1999 10:30:31 +0100

Could someone give me advice on the following:

We have several connected networks on different IP addresses, but when mail
is sent from machines with IP addresses not on the same subnet as the
sendmail host, we get a "551 ... we do not relay" It occurs every time
non-local email is send (ie. relayed thought the server.)

How do I get sendmail to trust the other IP networks? Do I need to add a
sendmail feature?

We are running RedHat V5.2 with Sendmail 8.8.7
