Make sure the machines on the 148.153.0.0 network have a network route for
the 10.1.1.0 network using 10.1.1.1 as the gateway and/or whatever other
default route.

But I thought Samba worked as group/user "nobody" so files created or edited
would have permission problems. Could this be because I am running in "share"
level access? I wasn't able to get user level to work proberly but I would
really like to. Having seperate passwords for each share would be ideal.

Hello,

When I use Windows 95 & NT Dialup Netwoking to dial out to a remote
access server through ZyXEL Omni TA128, it works well. However, for the
same PC/TA/line/switch interface, I can not make a call under Linux
Minicom or Windows HyperTerminal. (My goal is to make calls by pppd,
since 48 these TAs are controlled via Cyclades serial extender.) Below

I think he thinks that you want to do some phreaking. Like, use your
computer to convince the phone system to give you free long distance
calls and stuff.

My ISP has been having some disconnect issues just recently. All of a sudden
I noticed that my CONNECT string in the log file was missing compression.
Since I knew I had my modem set up right, I inquired and sure enough, they
had disabled compression to see if that would help. Looking at the syslog
log file, I noticed at the same time they had disabled compression, I
started getting the same error, you've been experiencing. Subsequently,
yesterday, they turned compression back on, and the Config-Request timeout
errors went away.

Check to see if your ISP has changed anything recently.

Sorry for the repost, I misfromatted the original message:

I am running the 2.2.2 kernel. I have compiled support for the Netgear
card into the kernel (not module) via the tulip driver provided on the
netgear diskette. I am trying to figure out how to instruct the card to
switch to full-duplex mode. The card works fine at full-duplex under my
alternative W95 boot. I have tried using the following on my boot disk:

LILO: linux ether=0,0,5,eth0

Unfortunately, the card stayed in half duplex mode. I am using loadlin to
normaly launch Linux, so if I could figure out what parameters to pass the
kernel, I could append it to my loadlin.bat. Any help you could give
would be greatly appreciated!

How do I know how many processes my system will allow? how many open

If not enough, how can I change the limits?

I've scanned the LDP pages and my copy of System Afmin Guide but can't

Please help. I'm planning an application that gets input from 250

I am using a Sony Vaio 818 laptop with RedHat 5.2, kernel 2.2.2, pcmcia
3.0.10... I purchased a Xircom PCMCIA RealPort Ethernet 10/100 card (model RE
100) and am trying to configure it to work under Linux.

The problem I'm having is this: the machine recognizes card inserts and
removals (two beeps of same tone for insert, one for removal), I can ifconfig
eth0 and the "card in use" light comes on, as well as the "port in use" light
on the ethernet hub, but I can't transfer data across the link.

I have never used PCMCIA before so I'm a little unsure where to check settings
and the like.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated!

Thanx in advance!

Typically, you should not be using the r-protocols through a firewall.
They're terribly unsafe, and susceptable to spoofing and other attacks.

Hi.
I'm fighting with autofs since few days !
I'm using autofs as automounter for my machine. I'm using a nis map
("ypcat auto.home") for my /home directory. The problem is the this map is
not complete, so I want to add the mounts that I need in a local map
("/etc/auto.home").
For now I can use each of the maps (nis and file) separatly but not
together.

Maybe someone knows the syntax of auto.master that can permit to me to
assign 2 differents maps to the same directory.

Good luck.

Does anyone know how to reset modems remotely (ie. through telnet) on an ISP

Have you tried the Linux VPN Masquerade home page at:

  ftp://ftp.rubyriver.com/pub/jhardin/masquerade/ip_masq_vpn.html

If it's asking for authorization, please verify your FTP settings in your
browser. You need to be using your email address as your anonymous FTP
password. If you can't get in at all, please let me know. You can also use
the HTTP mirror at http://www.wolfenet.com/~jhardin/ip_masq_vpn.html but I
have to pay for that... :)

Also, it'll be part of the standard kernel starting with 2.0.37, which
should be out shortly. It's in the 2.0.37pre kernels as well.

Whether or not reconnection breaks your VPN connection depends on how you
have your *VPN* connection set up. If you're getting a dynamic IP address
from the PPTP server, then your sessions will all fail when you redial. If
you're getting a static IP address (i.e. your client is configured to ask
for a specific IP address when you connect to the server) then your session
should be able to recover, depending on how long the link is down. Every so
often my ISP interrupts my dialup session for some reason, and if I get the
link reestablished within about a minute, everything is okay - no
established sessions over the link break, they just treat it as network
delay.

-->>But for incoming and outgoing email I have to redirect port 25(smtp)
       and 110(pop3).

The users should connect to the Linux-box on a specfic port (it can
also be 25 or 110) and all connections should redirected to port 25
and 110 on the mailserver of my ISP.
I do not have a local mailserver. All email-accounts are maintained
by the ISP.

I have done this before with a NT-box. Is used a programm called 'Wingate'.
It's also a proxy server. It has a builtin function called 'named pipes'
where
you can redirect TCP-ports.

How can I do this with Linux?
Is there a simple network service for this?

PS: I read the description of the SOCKS-proxy-server. I have to proxy
the incoming and outgoing mail with this software.
This method does not fit for me!

man procmail might be a good start.

procmail is what does user level mail filtering rules.

Unless you have an application that is Win 95 unaware than you should be able to
have samba load the printers "load printers = yes" your 2 q's will look like 2
printers in the network neighborhood. You'll then need to load the correct
drivers for the printer (just like any win95 printer setup)

Subject: Netatalk: Will it serve 100 users?
Date: Tue, 09 Mar 1999 23:18:01 GMT

I was just wondering what kind of load netatalk on Linux will handle.
My school has all Macs, and we have been having trouble with a flakey
Appleshare server (not under our control and troublesome as hell).

Has anyone tried running netatalk in a similar situation? Will it do
this kind of job, and if so, how much memory, etc. would it require?
Ideally we'd like to run it on a G3 Macintosh running LinuxPPC.

Thanks for all responses!

M.
