The man has spoken :)

I'm assuming you mean the eepro100+ since the eepro100 has been replaced
by the eepro100b then eepro100+?

I'll be testing your theory soon when I do an FTP install of RH 6.0 with
an Intel eepro100+. My ISP swears by them (they only use freeBSD) and I
have had zero problems with them under Bill's OS.

I tried going the tulip route (linksys etherfast 10/100) and its a mine
feild of swtched chipsets adn clones out there. What I thought was a
DEC chipset was swtiched for a PNIC (DEC clone). Stability would come
and go with kernel upgrades and driver upgrades. Whatever tulip driver
ships with RH 6.0 works great though.

I'd stick with the Intel or the 3com cards myself. Check out the
websites of those who build pre-installed Linux systems and see what
NICs they are using. Intel and 3com mostly.

Copy the line add to /etc/ppp/pap-secrets to /etc/ppp/chap-secrets since
these files are the same format.

 The normal options being passed to pppd other then 'name you' have
nonething to do with how it authorizes itself.

 HUMM maybe you should report this as a bug to RedHat.

There's talk of a Linux port sometime soon...

Can you print on Linux box? If you can't there is something wrong with =

lpr has not compiled in Kernel.
Check your Kernel setting and make sure lpr is compiled.

Another reason can be wrong configuration of SAMBA.

It is possible to apply max-size limits on email, if your linux
machine is the email server. I think they are disabled by default,
and I am not sure where I have seen them, anyway. Could it be your
ISP?

I have had no problems with files up to around 20 Megabytes.

I am masquerading two windows 95 machines behind my linux RH 5.2
machine.

I have the same problem and I'm running 24 bit color. I think Netscape

The basic reason for the FAILED message is becuse the PCMCIA card does
not get loaded until after the ETH0, I have the same error message on
my laptop and the Network works fine.

Yeah, I found some documentation by doing a search at redhat.com. It
was not entirely satisfactory, however. I also found a lot of
information by searching newsgroups at dejanews.com.

I have two different PCI NIC's.  Here's what I did.  I compiled
support into the kernel for both NIC's. I put one in. Noted the irq
that it was detected at. Made sure it worked.

I shutdown and turned off the machine. I took out the first card and
put the second card in a different PCI slot. I rebooted and noted the
IRQ and made sure the card worked.

As it turned out, eth0 was at IRQ 9, and eth1 was at IRQ 5. I figured
they would keep the same IRQ's since I put each one in the same slot
as when it was detected. I don't know if this is always true, but it
worked here.

I put both cards in. I added a line to lilo.conf, because otherwise
the kernel would stop after finding whichever card it found first.
I'll show you the whole entry for that image in lilo.conf

image=/boot/vmlinuz
  label = test
  vga = normal
  read-only
  root = /dev/hda5
  append="ether=9,0,0,eth0 ether=5,0,0,eth1"

that's it. Then I rebooted, and both cards came up working. The
rest is configuration. That's up to you. Let me explain the
arguments in append. the first number in each "ether =" string is
the IRQ. I set the other two numbers to zero, because the
documentation said that doing so would cause the kernel to use
defaults, or attempt to find the correct numbers by probing. The last
argument, obviously, is the name of the interface. As I have said
already, it worked for me! Good luck.

regards,
GW

We used to have the same trouble. Changing the NFS server so that the
mounts are forced to use TCP instead of UDP solved the problem for us.

Yeah, DUN employs auto PAP if it can. What you have to keep in mind if you
are using Linux with various POPs is that some allow the CHAT login method,
and others require PAP to do all the authentication. to check this out, try
to dial up your POP with minicom and see if you see the following:

Username: <your ID>
Password: <Your PWD>
isp> ppp
~{

The preceeding exchange is what I see in Minicom when I log in manually.
There is another possibility where PPP handles the user authentication
automatically instead of doing it outside of PPP. Unfortunately, I'm not
up on this method, however, you can watch it happen in the log file and
figure out from there what is breaking.

Joe, I know diddly about linux ... a severe understatement if I ever made
one. Have you checked out
http://www.netcom.com/bin/webtech/NETCOM_Accounts/Other_OS/linux.cfg.html

Also, I believe you do need to enable PAP now. That seemed to fix problems
for other linux users in some of the older netcom newsgroup postings. I
know, using trumpet, when they upgraded my local POP last year, I could
NOTget in until I switched to PAP.

Hope this helps, or at least doesnt hurt!
