Dont give io-values then..
(maybe the /etc/conf.module needs to be edite as well if it contain

Hi all,
I have installed RH 6.0 on my computer and work in GNOME.
But when I telnet to an Sun Sever and run some X program such as
clock,admintool,it
says "XView
error: Cannot open connection to window
server:myhostname:0 (Server
package)
Error: Can't open display: myhostname:0"
What's the problem?
Any help is appreciated!

Yup, I tried all of that pnp stuff, but unfortunately I guess praying wasn't
enough.. I think, after all that and then disabling plug and play to still
no effect, that my network card will just not work with DosLinux.
Thanks anyway =)

Try using the newest driver for the 3com card (the one
that's shipped with RH6 is a little out of date.
You have to compile a new kernel with the new driver in it.
Get it from Donald Becker's network drivers page:
http://cesdis1.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/
Good luck

What distribution are you using?
Which NFS server is running (the user nfs or the kernel nfs [knfsd])?
Program not registered means that something's wrong with the RPC's.
Send more details.

you do not need or want to have dynamic addresses in /etc/hosts (lmhosts is
just used for Samba and Samba does not even care if it is missing).
Just point Linux at the appropriate DNS / DHCP servers.

Hi all,
I wish to set two separate dial up connections. One is for web browsing
traffic, the other for specific mail pickups to another ISP. I am not
very familiar with linux, but have got the single connection going ok.
question:
1) How do I go about routing the different traffic from my local network
?
2) what do i do on the firewall config (using Ipfwadm) ?
3)Has anybody done this sort of thing and can give me example scripts ?
cheers.

To be able to ping (the Internet) from the masqueraded machines you need
to make sure you compiled ICMP MASQUERADING in the kernel. From what
you describe (masq working except external ping/traceroute) it sounds
like you did not do this.

Whilst that is helpful, it would not, by itself, solve the problem that

Sorry Mike - as you can guess this is *REALLY* bugging me now....
I am using an unmodified version of phone.filter that came with diald. The
first rule in the file is "accept tcp 20 tcp.syn" the first udp rule is as
you suggest ignore udp udp.dest=udp.who
I have narrowed the problem down to named - if I kill DNS everything works
fine - except none of the PC's can see th outside world anymore 8^<
If I do an nslookup on the IP that was pinged to bring the line up I see
howards.co.uk ?? This looks strange to me as howards is a logon on the
machine but its lost part of the domain ( fellowquest.co.uk ) - Could this
be bad config of DNS on my part ???
I appreciate any comments you could make

When trying to run the fetchmail command I get the error message\
fetchmail: no mailservers have been specified.
I ran the mc file tcpproto.mc to create a cf file for sendmail.cf
and I only added DOMAIN(generic) to the actual file before compiling. I
am running a small internal tcp network with a linux box and serveral
windows 95 workstations. =20
At one point I could actually get mail using Eudora lite to check for
mail. Mail on the server itself has gotten worse. =20
I configured several files: db.mydomain.hosts, db.###.###.###.hosts,
named.ca and resolv.conf and this gave me dns (verified with nslookup),
but the mail just gets worse. Any ideas?
How and where do I specify a mailserver?
Thanks - Pam

Yes. I've set up an Administrator account on the server with no
password. Administrator can mount the share from the NT box,
Administrator can mount the share from the W98 box.
However, the W98 box can see the directory listing, but can't access the
files.
Very strange behaviour. I'll post a complete problem description next
week ( including smb.conf etc ).
BTW, I performed all the tests in DIAGNOSIS.txt and they all passed.

hi,
i'm trying to connect a windows98 box and a linux box (debian potato,
2.2.12) without much luck. i can't even get them to ping one another.
my linux box is 192.168.1.11 and the windows box is 192.168.1.12.
they're both setup with a netmask of 255.255.255.0, with the standard
tools on each operating system. they're plugged into a working hub. but
they refuse to ping each other.
i am certain the problem is in my setup (or in software otherwise) since
when i boot the linux box to windows, with the exact same setup, they
can communicate perfectly!
i have a pretty plain vanilla debian setup. i turned off ip spoof
protection; that didn't work. i updated the kernel; that didn't work. i
made sure that no firewall-type protection exists; still nothing.

Subject: 2 Network Cards - 1 Subnet.
Date: Fri, 3 Sep 1999 11:43:19 +0100
Hi networking gurus,
I've been trying to sort this out for a while now, but am getting no further
(and its making me feel thick!)
I have a small set of fixed IPs from my ISP. I've got an external ISDN
router which automatically dials the ISP and routes traffic back to the
calling machine.
My Linux box has two network cards installed, one connected to the network
via a hub, the other connected to the ISDN router via a Cross-Over cable.
I can ping the ISDN router and beyond without problems, but I cannot see the
rest of the network from the 1st (eth0) card. However if I manually add a
route to each machine using route add ipaddress dev eth0 everything works
fine (although adding this to rc.inet1 does not work!?)
I think the problem is something to do with netmask?
Anyway my IP range goes thus:
xxx.xxx.xxx.64 Net
.65 Gateway (ISDN router has this IP)
.66 -> .70 Fixed IPs of network machines.
.71 Broadcast
I currently have eth0 (internal network card) set to .67 and eth1 (link to
router) to .70
I've tried changing the .70 link to .64 but this had no change?
The whole purpose for this is to setup the linux box as a firewall and dns
cache for the other machines.
Thanks
Frazer
