Assuming the first card is eth0 here is what we have in /etc/rc.local
# this route is needed for microsoft OS (win95) that violate
# the dhc protocol
route add -host 255.255.255.255 dev eth0
# serve only on LAN interface:
/usr/sbin/dhcpd eth0 &
the other interface (eth1) is connected to the internet.

Wow, this sounds really screwy. The only thing I can think of is that
when diald invokes pppd, there is some key option that is missing. So
examine how you are invoking pppd when it *does* work, and see if
there is any difference between that and how diald is invoking it.
One thing that comes to mind is defaultroute. Good luck.

Its possible that computer A has AutoLogon set in the registry. This is the
behavior I've seen when a computer on a network doesn't prompt for a
username and password on startup. Run regedit on computer A and do a search
for AutoLogon (I think that's right - it might be AutoLogin or Auto Logon
with a space). If you find it just delete the key. That should fix your
problem. I've seen this a few times and doing this fixed it every time.
I just checked microsoft's web site. The article that talks about this
problem is Q141858. The registry entry is:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\
Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Network\Real Mode Net\AutoLogon
Just delete the AutoLogon entry.

Yallo!
This email should probably elicit and "go and look here response".
I use PRODIGY to connect and have been using "netcfg" under RedHat 5.0.
As I understand (and I damn well can be wrong), "netcfg" connects using
PAP.
I have a laptop and on the road I was unable to connect to prodigy - in
Boston and in Boise (Idaho). However, I did manage to connect both times
through windows - I checked the details of the connections and the
connection
was created using CHAP.
My questions is, is there a good LINUX script out there which will
autodetect the
connection protocol so that I don't have to worry about not being able
to ALWAYS run linux. Ideally, I'd just have to change the phone number
and
id/password in the script and I should be able to connect to just about
ANY
ISP. Other enlightening suggestions are also welcome.
Linux networking studs, please help.
Thanks in advance.

It all depends on the content of the server (a lot of graphic content needs
a lot of bandwidth, etc.).
Also I would suggest looking at DSL vs ISDN. ISDN is just way to expensive!
Good luck!

Trevor,
The following steps will allow you to connect to Earthlink with Red
Hat Linux (X Windows):
1. Start your X session by typing startx at your shell prompt.
2. Click somewhere in the root window and open the Red Hat Control
Panel from the pop-up menu. Or, open an xterm and type control-panel &
(type the "&" symbol) then press enter.
3. Open the Modem icon in the Control Panel window.
4. Select your modem's device location (cua0=COM1; cua1=COM2;
cua2=COM3; cua3=COM4)
5. Click OK to save your settings.
6. Open the Network icon.
7. Click the Name button and enter the following:
Domain: earthlink.net
Name Server: 207.217.126.81 (if you can enter a second DNS address,
enter 207.217.77.82)
8. Click the Interface button, then click Add. Select PPP and click OK
(you're adding ppp0).
9. Enter the following information:
User: ELN/your_username
Password: your_password
10. Highlight ppp0 and click Edit, then set your modem speed:
14.4k modem: 38400bps
28.8k modem: 57600bps
33.6k modem: 57600bps
56k modem: 115200bps
Communications:
Init: AT&F or AT&F1 if you do not know the proper initialization
string for your modem.
Phone Number: enter your local EarthLink access number
Select Modem: select your installed modem
Click the Network button in the Control Panel.
MTU: 576 (you can experiment with MTU=1500, also).
11. Click the Interface tab.
To connect, highlight ppp0 and click Activate. To disconnect, click
De-Activate.
To check your connection, open an xterm and type tail -f
/var/log/messages
Check that you have been assigned an IP address and that no error
messages are reported.

I think if you want to run ppp as a non-root user, you really want to use
"call" which is designed for just this.
>From Debian, /usr/bin/pon is:
#!/bin/sh
/usr/sbin/pppd call ${1:-provider}
/usr/sbin/pppd is:
-rwsr-x--- 1 root dip 124496 May 30 12:29 /usr/sbin/pppd*
i.e. only users in group dip can run pppd
/etc/ppp and /etc/ppp/peers want to be mode 0750, group dip
Then have /etc/ppp/peers/provider which contains the relevant ppp options.
This will allow users to open up a limited set of ppp configurations, but
not to change those configurations.

These lines say <local>:<remote> so you are giving the same local ip address to the
interfaces.
Looks like they are behaving according to their setup, but I think you've got the
local and remote IP s reversed.

I found that dates which are ok in NT (using dir) are wrong in Linux using

but are correct using ls in smbclient !!

Yes, please let me know if you get a solution for this.
Perhaps it's a bug in smbmount ??

I have several ethernet cards simply marked "Gateway".
The base I/O address is set using four dip switches, but I do not have =

I have searched for docs, but could find none.=20
Does anyone know the settings?
Is there a Linux or MS program that will auto-detect the base address?
