After making the change to syslog.conf and creating ppp-log you must
tell syslogd to reread syslog.conf with " kill -HUP `pidof syslogd` "
or equivalent.

: Even tried kdebug 7 in the ioptions file.

Don't add kdebug until you/we look at the debug messages, kdebug's not
needed often and makes the logs harder to read.

I have an intel etherpro 100 (works fine) set up to a cable modem with a

can't ping the machine (from other boxes) through the second IP.

I have my diald (sort of) working. I would suspect that you are typing
diald from the /sbin/init.d directory, and you have a diald script located
there. If you type "which diald" you should get back:

/usr/sbin/diald

However, your distribution may have it in a different place. Another thing
to try: cd to this directory, and type

more diald.

If you get ascii text that look like shell commands with readable comments,
you are pointing to a startup shell script which calls the real executable
diald. If you get gibberish, you are typing the real diald executable
file. My suspicions are that the diald initialization shell script is being
found first in your path. This would probably be the case if you typed the
command from the /sbin/init.d directory.

In any case, no problemmo, at least your diald script is working
correctly. This is 90% of the battle. Now, you must call it with the
argument "up" as part of your statup initialization. and I think you should
call it again with the argument "down" as part of your shutdown scripts.
Exactly how you do this depends on your distribution. I can give you the
scripts I use for SuSE, but they would just confuse you if you have another
distribution. If you don't know how to do this I would suggest reading up
on how to add init scripts for your distribution. There may be a README in
your /sbin/init.d directory. It might work if you just add the line

/sbin/init.d/diald up

to the file

/sbin/init.d/boot.local

If this works, clean up by adding

/sbin/init.d/diald down

to the file

/sbin/init.d/halt.local

WARNING: If you do have to muck with init scripts use ->EXTREME CAUTION<-.
You can hang your system big time if you make a mistake here. (Been there,
done that) Learn exactly how the init procedure works for your distribution,
Copy everything you change in your init directory to a backup file and make
changes a little at a time, and have a rescue disk handy in case you do
botch something. If you need to rescue the system, you can just mount the
drive, cd to the /sbin/init.d and replace the fubar file with your backup.
I don't want to scare you to death, but extra caution is warrented here.

BTW, are you having problems with Netscape crashing the diald sometimes, if
you leave it connected for long periods of time? If not and you don't mind,
can you please post your diald.conf?

Hi all!
I am trying to get satan up and running, and I think I need some help :D

When I start satan I get the main html page in netscape,
but, when I click on "Satan Target Selection" It asks me to save the
file.
I think that this is a Netscape issue, but I'm not sure, because
I had some trouble compiling the items in the "src/boot/" dir.
(I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it, or if it's just a
setting
in netscape that needs to be made....

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello,

I've got the follwing problem:

I'm working on a SuSe 6.1 Linux Distribution with the networkcard: LEVEL ONE
FNC-0101TX

all is working fine, but I can't get any ping answers from other machins in
the net.

I use the tulip.o module an the ifconfig command reports my networkdevice.

The ping to localhost works fine and the ping to the card itself also, but
to an other PC, theres nothing.

In Win NT works the card perfect, and I can ping to all other pc in the net.

Please Help me.

Subject: Help Interal routing, IP Masq, PPP
Date: Sun, 13 Jun 1999 02:26:47 GMT

I need a hand with my home network.

Two Linux boxes, "desktop" and "notey". They are both connected via ethernet and
a hub on an internal network 192.168.50.2 and 192.168.50.1.

"notey" also has a modem which dials into either work or local ISP, so its PPP
interface address changes. It is running IP Masquerading to "desktop". It is
also the DNS server for my internal network.

When I connect "notey" to another network via PPP, it comes up fine; both
"notey" and "desktop" can talk to the external network just fine.

"desktop" can telnet/ftp/ping/nslookup to notey, and, via Masq. to the world.

The problem is that "notey" can't telnet/ftp/ping back to "desktop" since there
is no route there. It passes the Masq. packets back ok, but no direct TCP
connection from "notey" to "desktop". The other way works fine.

I think this is because the default gw on "notey" is the PPP interface in the
other, external, network; and this knows nothing of "desktop" in my private
network, on eth0.

I've tried adding routes with /sbin/route add -net but I don't understand it
enough to make it go.

How do I add a route to "notey" so that it can talk back to "desktop"?
(bonus question: how come "notey" can answer "desktop"'s DNS questions with my
current setup, it cant be using TCP, can it?)

Current routing table on "notey" is:

Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags MSS Window irtt Iface

Thank you very much for any advice you can give me. Please note that I am dumb

Thanks for replying, Dang!
Good question... no. I am currently running on my Win95 side through the ADSL, so I
know the NIC work and
the Cisco 675 works.

> 192.168.x.x are reserve for use in a local area network and will not
> be routed on the internet.

True, but on my Win95 I am connected to the Internet and the winiipcf program shows:
DNS Server: navix.net
                207.91.5.20
                207.91.5.20

IP Address 192.168.200.2 <--- always this, even after cold boot.
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default gateway 192.168.200.1
DHCP Server 192.168.200.1

Does this seem to suggest that the Cisco router is setup as a bridge?

I've tried these numbers on the SuSE side by doing an ifconfig eth0 down, and then
using iconfig to bring eth0
back up with these numbers. And, in the YaST setup of SuSE I can put an IP address on
the NIC, and it will
stay. Either way, it makes no difference - no connections ("unable to reach the
network"). When I strip the
IP address off of the NIC, deactivate it and to a cold reboot, the 192.168.1.4 address
always appears.

> does the dsl modem acts as a masquerading server?

The booklet says "The Cisco 675 router is an ADSL modem used for home connectivity to
an ADSL service provider
over an ADSL/ATM physical layer.... The Cicso 675 router operates usng the Cisco
Broadban Operating System
(CBOS)."
The CBOS can be setup as either a bridge or a router. IF it were setup by the ISP as
a bridge then it can
operate in the RFC1483 mode or the PPP/BCP mode, but not both. "

I don't know which way it is set up because I don't have the special cable that
connects my serial port to the
Cisco Manager port. And, since I wasn't given the cable to connect to the Management
port of the Cisco, I
would guess that the IPS put a password on the CBOS to prevent the user from changing
the Cisco's
configuration.

The manual says the following: "When the Cisco 675 operates in the bridge mode, it
behaves like a wire
connecting a local PC directly to a service provider's network. Because bridges
operates at a MAC layer only,
applications requiring IP communication, such as Telnet, TFTP, RADIUS, Syslog, Ping
and the web interface, are
not available unless a management VC is configured."

The setup is splitterliess, with EZ-DSL Microfilters at each phone. The ISP provided
the crossover cable
because I am a single PC with an Ehternet NIC, and not connected to an Ethernet hub,
i.e., I don't have a
small network on my side of the router.

> check ifconfig to see if the ip address is assigned correctly.

What would be the 'correct' setting, a class C IP address? It has never shown that,
as I've relayed above.

After booting, warm or cold, ifconfig always shows the NIC as having an IP address of
192.168.1.4 with a
netwmask of 255.255.255.0 and a broadcast of 192.168.1.255.

> From what I've deal with ADSL, you actually need to get a real ip
> address for it to work, not one of them lan only ones. the dsl modem
> acts more as a bridge than a router.

I don't think that possibility would be allowed by the ISP.

>
> let me get this straight, you assigned your nic 127.0.0.2 but the dhcp
> server assigns your nic 192.168.1.4. which is the correct ip?

No, I assigned my localhost, named JLKreps.At.Home, the IP address of 127.0.0.2. But,
if I assign IPADDR = ""
with YaST (SuSE's config tool) and run SuSEconfig, which deactiveate the eth0 device,
removing any IP address
from it's setup, then do a cold boot, the DHCP Client software fetches an IP adress
from the router (I am
assuming) and ifconfig shows the eth0 device as the Cyclone 3c905B 10/100BTX with the
192.168.1.4 stuff.

In deparation, however, I have assigned the NIC my localhost IP address. I've also
stuck the 207.91.5.20
address in the NIC, but it doesn't allow any connections. I generally use Lynx to see
if I can connect to the
Internet after I've entered a configuration. It usually says it can't find the
Internet.
When I have the following setup:

127.0.0.1 localhost, loopback
0.0.0.0 default
127.0.0.2 JLKreps.At.Home
192.168.1.4 eth0 (ifconif shows the 3c905B Cyclone having that address)
255.255.255.0 netmask for NIC
192.166.1.255 broadcast for NIC

then lynx responds "looking up Yahoo.com" when I ask it to to to that website. The
Cisco "LAN" and "WAN
activity lights blink back and forth for a long while but nothing happens. When I
fire up KDE and run Netscap
and click on the home page button netscape display the 'looking for ..." message and
appears inactive while
the Cisco LAN and WAN lights blink back and forth for a long while, then only
occasionally. Netscape appears
to be waiting or is hung. I have to kill it to close it.

address, irq, hardware address, and stuff like that?

Thanks

Do you su like this: `su -`? That way, you execute root's login scripts and
have all the paths set up right. If you just `su`, none of that happens.

Hello all,
Recently I got my ppp connection working under Linux. However, when I
try to ping an http name address I don't get a reply. I have no
problems when I ping an IP address. I did edit my resolv.conf to
include the nameservers. I even called my ISP to double check that I
have the right IP adresses of the name servers. Anyone have any ideas?
TIA,
  Andy

THIS IS THE FIX!!!(for NT and Linux)

Well everyone, I had a chat with a UNIX guru...
and it turns out that "lpd' is powerfull....

If you make a file named hosts.lpd in your /etc directory containing
the machines that are connected, you will be able to print directly
through lpd. In Windows NT you need to install the TCP/IP Printing
module under networking. When you add the lpr printing port,
specify the linux box as the server, and the name of the printer.

For a linux machine you merely specify a networked lpd printer
instead of a local printer and then you can also print from one linux box
to the other in this manner.

WOW IT WORKS!!!

I am looking (and asking) around for the correct Win95/98 driver
or syntax to use this.

Use 'ps axf' to see if it's running.

You start squid with the 'bin/RunCache &' command.
