Hi
I'd like the telnet deamon on my server to be running on a port other then 23.
How can i do it?
Will changing it in /etc/services will do it or do i need to change the code?
if so where is the file name that i should change? and once it is changed do i just
use gcc or make or?
If none of the above do, how else can i do it? (or if there is an easyer way).

(please send a cc to my mail address)

Thanks

Hi

Some question on remote execute hope your can help,

I want to use rsh for this purpose, (through dial-up, ppp connection
which have been done),
but the linux rsh only said "rsh remote-system-name linux-command" where
the login name and
password is not specified, and when I do testing,
1. if I don't make the .rhosts file is user home directory, -- acess denied
- OK undestand
2. if I put in, - wait infinite for this, why ?

Another question, how to skip a booting step in it cause infinite wait ? (
smbd cause this ) , which
never go though ( and I have to resolve REINSTALL the whole Linux, god )

Thank,

I have redhat 5.2 working with DHCP but for kernel 2.0.36 (default RH
5.2 kernel?)
Not that hard. I can give you more details if you decide to do it and
are having problems.

I spent the extra time to get the DHCP working so @home would not
contact me for any 'issues' of using a static address when I should
have been DHCP.

Subject: Linux with ISDN router ? Advice ?!
Date: Mon, 14 Jun 1999 21:43:13 GMT

Greetings

We have a small LAN here of Win 95 machines, with an ISDN router on the
network. The router is set as the default gateway on the windows
machines, and this works easily and effectively.

I have now installed linux on one of the machines, and would like it to
access the internet in a similar way.

Is there a howto for configuring a network in this way ? Has anyone done
it, and know the pitfalls ? How do I set up the rooting, and is there
any danger of the linux machine demanding a dial-up every couple of
minutes during the night ?! And is there any smart software that might
be able to tell me whether the router is online or not ???

Any help or advice with this would be greatly appreciated !

Thank you.

Cheers

Jamie.

You don't need inetd.conf for squid. There a file called
squid.conf in your /etc directory. 3128 is default port number and
you can change them in squid.conf file.

I have an situation with a Win95 box and a computer running Red Hat Linux
5.2 (with kernel 2.2.4, if that makes a difference). smbclient transfers
from the Wintendo proceed at about 3000K/s, but transfers to the Windows box
get about 9 K/s. smbmount'ed shares have the same problem. This is on a
single segment network with a LinkSys 10/100 hub in between.

I use smbclient like so: smbclient //winpc/c -N

I've seen posts from other people with this same problem, but I've never

You have the same problem that roughly 2 million users already
had before you, all of them posting the same question here. The
questions (and answers, of course ;-) have been stored here for
your convenience:

   http://www.deja.com

Hint #1: Try using IP numbers instead of hostnames
Hint #2: DNS is used for translating hostnames to IPs
Hint #3: Linux uses the following files for DNS configuration:
         /etc/resolv.conf
         /etc/host.conf
         /etc/hosts
         /etc/HOSTNAME

Try "man tcpdump" from a command line.

The only thing that looks vaguely suspicous is the receive window size
that the linux box is sending back to the dos box. It is not out of the
ordinary, rather it is close to 32K -- a magical number in dos. Maybe there
is a bug in the dos TCP/IP stack? Have you tried the MS Knowledge Base?
www.microsoft.com/support I think.

I'm observing some odd behaviour exchanging QWK reply packets via zmodem with
a local BBS. This is a Linux system, running C-Kermit.
I see the same behaviour if I use minicom, but I want to stick to using
Kermit, and my guess's I have a better chance of fixing this if I do.

Problem: there's a long pause between sending the .rep packet and the BBS
deciding to unzip it, and the pause includes the BBS sending what I interpret
to be more requests for the zmodem upload to commence. The packet gets sent
immediately when I issue the command 'send chowda.rep', but it seems the board
doesn't know I through sending. Here's a screen shot of a typical session:

You need to add, at the very least, the expect/send CONNECT '\d\c'
after the telephone number in the chat script. If chat uses the -f
option to specify a separate file for the chat expect/sends then use
CONNECT \d\c instead. This is if you configured for PAP or CHAP
authentication.

If the ISP needs a login/password entered instead (not many do these
days) then you have to add those before the CONNECT expect/send plus
anything extra that may be needed to start PPP at the ISP. Minicom is
your friend in this case.

I'd try two things. Check that the UART configured in Linux is the
UART that the modem actually uses. " setserial /dev/ttyS0 " A 16550A
UART and a 16550 UART are not the same. You should also try matching
the ISPs ACCM request (asyncmap) with the pppd option <asyncmap 0> .

If you want to save on disk space then you can drop the pppd option
<kdebug 7> which is seldom needed to debug PPP and makes reading the
logs harder.

When you get things working try removing the pppd option <novj> , VJ
header compression helps speed up the PPP link. I'd suggest adding
a pppd speed option since otherwise pppd defaults to 9600 . You can
try 19200 with a 16450 UART and 115200 with a 16550A UART.
