There was a post on this NG saying that some modem companies are moving
towards Linux and pretty soon there will be LinModem drivers. If your
modem is detected under Linux, and can not dial any number, chances are
it is a winmodem. Such a winmodem will stay as winmodem until there
exists a driver for it under Linux. Then, it will become a LinModem.
What you can do is either return the modem or exchange with some friends
who are thinking to get a 56K modem to replace their 33.6Kbps modem ...

Subject: 3c503 card under SuSE 6.2
Date: Fri, 10 Sep 1999 16:21:46 GMT
I'm trying to install a 3c503/16 card on my Linux
box, to connect the Linux box to a Windows NT box,
and I can't get either box to ping the other. My
initial guess is that the problem is that the Linux
box has trouble receiving packets.
When I ping from the Linux box, I notice that the
packet counts reported by "netstat -i" go up as I would
expect -- TX-OK goes up, as does RX-ERR. RX-OK does not.
On the NT box, "netstat -s" shows an increase in the total
number of packets received and sent, and no errors.
Pinging from the NT box doesn't work either.
I got the 3c503 for free; in fact, I got 4. With one of
them, ifconfig won't bring the interface up, but the other
3 get exactly the same behavior.
Any ideas? Does this sound like hardware? or software?
One idea I had was to put 2 cards in and have one ping
the other, but I don't know how to configure this.
- - - - - - - - -
The Setup:
I've set the 3c503 jumpers to use I/O address 0x300,
shared memory starts at 0xC8000, and I jumpered it
to be in 16-bit mode. The card has a thick (D-connector)
and thin (BNC) Ethernet connecter, and I have used the
BNC connector to connect to the BNC on the Windows box.
I have terminators on both ends of the coax; in other words,
I connect the cable to each card via a T with the cable,
the interface, and the terminator on the 3 legs. There
doesn't seem to be any way to select thin vs. thick;
I'm guessing that the card always talks to both and
receives from either. Nothing is plugged into the thick
ethernet connecter.
I'm using SuSE 6.2, straight out of the box (yes, I bought
the box from SuSE), the kernel is 2.2.10 (?). I'm
not using a graphic interface (X is installed, but I'm
not using it for these tests.)
The 3c503 driver is a module, and I have set the appropriate
line in /etc/conf.modules to have option 3c503 io=0x300 irq=5
(more or less -- this is from memory, but I imitate the commented-
out lines.)
The computer (a Pentium Pro box from VA Research, with a P54/75MHz
processor, Triton chip set, AMBIOS bios, 4 PCI & 3 ISA slots)
had an on-motherboard "sound card" using IRQ 5; I moved this to
IRQ 10 (I don't use the sound card anyway) and marked IRQ 5
as "used by ISA card" in the BIOS setup.
The Linux box boots up OK, the 3c503 driver comes up and prints
out a comforting message, ifconfig, route, etc., run OK (these
are all run from the /etc/rc.d scripts) If I run ifconfig,
it says that eth0 is up and has the correct IP address
(192.168.1.1), netmask, and broadcast address.
The NT box is set up to have address 192.168.1.2, and
I confirmed this with ipconfig .
Routing is OK for both "lo" and "eth0", as confirmed
with netstat -r on both boxes.
On the Linux box, IIRC, there's no default gateway defined,
but that doesn't matter in this case, since both are on the
same network.

Subject: Help: Linux Netscape can't do DNS lookups using ADSL
Date: Fri, 10 Sep 1999 16:27:51 GMT
Hi,
This is a really strange problem. I've been using a stock RedHat 5.2
system for about a year with no problems. I recently got ADSL service
from BellSouth. It works really well, except for one (really important)
thing: Netscape Navigator can't do DNS lookups properly. Here're the
facts:
* Doing a "nslookup hostname.com" works fine. DNS lookups also
work fine for other software, such as lynx, ping, ssh, etc.
* When Netscape tries to do a DNS lookup, its CPU usage goes up to
95%, and my other ADSL networking dies (i.e., all my telnet
sessions are hung, ping hangs, etc.). When I hit "stop" in
Netscape, my networking is fine (i.e., telnet connections
weren't dropped, just hung). I have left Netscape for 10
minutes to see what happens, and it never completes the DNS
lookup.
* I have tried this with Netscape versions 4.51, 4.6, and 4.07
with the same results.
* In desperation, I setup a caching DNS server on my machine, and
put 127.0.0.1 in my /etc/resolv.conf. So now when I want to go
to foo.com, I do a "nslookup foo.com", and then I can go to
foo.com from Netscape, since foo.com will already be in named's
cache, and Netscape will look it up quickly and proceed as
normal. Obviously, this is a non-optimal way to browse the web.
* I have tried a variety of different name servers, including ones
at my company, the ones that DHCP sets up in
/etc/resolv.conf.dhcp, and the root nameservers that my named
uses. Same effect for all of them.
* I never had any problems like this when I was using PPP for
internet service.
Thanks for any help,
Sean

You'll be able to find out from Documentation/Changes in the kernel
source tree, it's called net-tools. You should read this file carefully
whenever you upgrade to a new kernel version series.

dhclient works @ command line, no problems. Question is, how do I
start it at boot time? Can't do it in rc.local because a service
needs dhclient running prior to rc.local. Can't use control-panel
Network Config or the equivalent netconf. Setting the adapter to dhcp
this way does not work (as described in the DHCP mini-howto).
However for Slackware's version it mentions editing /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1
Of couse, there is no file in RedHat, but is there a equivalent? Am I

I have now got this working -- using the Linux /etc/password for
login PAP authorisation.
The autoPPP seems to create a PPP link between Win95 and Linux.
A couple of problems:
* A terminal screen *still* comes up in Win95, even though I have
disabled this option.
* Once connected, I want to be able to view the web pages on my Apache
server on the Linux box using the PPP link. I can't get this working at
all! Is it possible?
I try http://machinename or http://IP address of Linux box as shown in
ifconfig -- no luck. Yet another DNS problem for redHat in standalone
mode?
Any tips welcomed.

As far as I know, there are two products on their way to linux, and promise
full support for ASP on any Java-enabled server (including apache).
http://www.chilisoft.com/ is coming out w/ a linx version in late 99, and
iASP by Halcyon Software (http://www.halcyonsoft.com ) is out now and runs

Finally figured it out. Here is the command sequence:
#ifdown eth0 (to disconnect eth0 from the NIC)
#rmmod 3c59x (to remove the 100mn e-net driver module)
#insmod 3c59x debug=1 full_duplex=0,0,1
(this re-installs the 100mb driver; debug =1 is the least verbose
mode; full_duplex=0,0,1 overrides autoetect and forces 100mb)
#ifup eth0 (to reconnect eth0 to the card)

The previous answer will get rid of the error messages in your log. In my
case, I had the same problem (could connect and ping but no Web access) and
the solution turned out to be adding "novj" to the ppp options. This
corresponds to disabling PPP header compression in Windows.

hi
it's far from an ideal solution, but you could use a program called VMWARE
(www.vmware.com - i think). it allows you to create 'virtual computers'
inside your own. what you could do is boot into linux and use vmware to
create a win9x machine. install windows and the connection program on your
'new' computer, and whenever you want connect, just change task to your
virtual machine and log on again. maybe you could use some sort of script in
windows (or visual basic if you know it) to automatically logon again every
2 hours.
hope this helps,

Certainly does sound odd.Have you run through each of the scenarios
enough to totally convince yourself of these syptoms? ie. how much did
you check the connectivity to those sites from the other side of your
PPP link? Perhaps those sites are dodgy, & you fluked a good
connection to them when connecting from there.....
perhaps your ISP is filtering packets from these sites. NS lookups
doesn't indicate ip connectivity to the site, just that the name
matches an addres....

Be more specific on what you have tried, normally the first 2 things you
check is :
1) Is TCP/IP running ok ?
Check : Ping 127.0.0.1
2) Is my network card running ?
Check : Ping [Your Machine's IP adress]
Be ware that the second check is not always conclusive, i had a case that I
had an IRQ conflict, causing my pings to outgoing networks to fail but my
card replied ok !
If you are working from another pc in your network and using your LiNUX box
as a gateway to the internet you have to check the gateway setting on your
workstation :
In windows you can set a gateway in network properties --> TCPIP
In linux you can add the line "route add default gw [IP adress of
gateway]"
If this is set ok, try pinging the gateway from your workstation
if ok try pinging the ip of the DNS server, if ok then try pinging
http://www.linux.org
I haven't got any experience on cable modems yet, but if these checks fail I
would check out your cable modem. Perhaps this one needs configuration as
well ?

When I type "ifconfig eth0 up", I met the following error message:
SIOCSIFFLAG: Resource temporarily unavailable.
Any ideas? Thanks.
