I don't know of a version of AOL for Linux or Unix platforms. You might
try looking on AOL's website. As long as you can get hostnames or IP
addresses for AOL's servers (ie mail.aol.com), you should be able to use
something like Netscape to access the mail. The only problem is figuring
out which protocol to use. If AOL uses POP(3) or IMAP, you are okay, and
there may be some other protocols that are compatible with Netscape or
pine, but you need IP addresses and protocols.

I'm not sure if this will help but look on the web for something called TC
(Traffic Control) for Linux. The last Linux Journal talked about it, and it
seems like a way to control which IP stream has priority.
Else you could also play with "nice"

Hello,
We use RedHat 5.2 as print servers in our data
center (700 remote printers). Everything works
fine for now 6 months.
But today I have an interesting problem.
If I try to print on any queue, the following
error messages is returned:
lpr: connect: No such file or directory
jobs queued, but cannot start daemon.
All queues are working fine on the backup print
server (exact copy).
I tried to enable-disable printers, restart LPD,
remove lock/status files, reboot.... Nothing.
2 months ago the same thing happened after
killing lpd. I had to clean printer configuration
(rm -r /var/spool/lpd/* and /etc/printcap) to fix
it.
Do you have any idea?
Thanks a lot.

Hello,
I'm trying to install a network card Compaq NETFLEX 3/P(tlan.o module) and
here is what I got:
1.ifconfig output:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:80:5F:D4:6F:84
inet addr:192.168.0.3 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0

TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0

Interrupt:17 Base address:0xf4f0
2. console output:

Jun 14 19:48:45 linux1 kernel: TLAN: eth0 irq=17 io=f4f0, Compaq

Jun 14 19:49:02 linux1 kernel: TLAN: eth0: Link forced.
2. message when I'm trying to use "insmod tlan irq=5 io=0xf4f0

/lib/modules/2.2.9/net/tlan.o: invalid parameter parm_io
/lib/modules/2.2.9/net/tlan.o: invalid parameter parm_speed
As you can see the IRQ detected is 17.....!!!! I know(with a DOS program)
that the card is on 5 ...
I did tried kernel 2.2.6,7,8,9 with Caldera 2.2 and SUSE 6.1.
I tried to put as a parameter in conf.modules:
"alias eth0 tlan
options tlan io=0xf4f0 irq=5"
and I got the same message: "invalid parameter parm_irq" etc...
What's strange is that after I load the module..with that strange IRQ...I
have conectivity for about 2-3 min...and then nothing...it's really weird.
I've changed 3 cards, I've changed the slot on the mainboard,I've enable
and
disable PNP in BIOS..I did everything!!!
So how can I force to use that IRQ(5)? Or am I doing something wrong here?

I'm not familiar with the HL-820, so I don't know what it does; but many
WinPrinters require bidirectional communication to work at all. You'd
therefore need substantial layers of software in Linux to get these to
work.
If the HL-820 just takes a big binary file, though, you may be able to get
it working by defining a "raw" printer device -- one with no print filter
attached to it. For instance, I use this (in my /etc/printcap) with
another printer:
raw:\
:sd=/var/spool/lpd/raw:\
:mx#0:\
:sh:\
:sf:\
:lp=/dev/lp1:
> If the above isn't possible, I can get my hands on a
> HL-760 - would this help?
Yes. IIRC, the HL-760 is a PCL 5e printer, so it should work fine from
Linux. Tell Ghostscript (or your printer configuration tool, like Red
Hat's printtool) that you're using an HP LaserJet 4 (ljet4 Ghostscript
device driver, IIRC), and you should be set.

It is simple. Since FAT partitions don't support Unix-style permissions,
Linux has to fake them, and it does this for the entire partition at mount
time. What you need to do is to change the permissions (and, if you like
the user ID) at mount time. You do this with the umask (and uid for user
ID) parameter. For instance:
/dev/hda1 vfat /dos defaults,umask=0,uid=500 0 0
The above /etc/fstab entry will give 777 permissions to all files, and
assign ownership to whoever has the user ID 500. (It also disables any
attempt to fsck the drive, since Linux doesn't support that on FAT
partitions.) Since you're exporting this via Samba, you presumably don't
care about the fact that 777 permissions produce execute permission (this
is done to allow you to search through directories). Also, note that this
will NOT mask the write bit; Linux will use the FAT read-only flag to set
the write permission for the file.

Two suggestions to try:
a) smtpd
b) vacation
Search on smtpd at httpd://www.freshmeat.net. It's sort of a wrapper for
the smtp daemon, and very easily configuable. Have a look at "vacation" on
your system (I haven't actually tried vacation, but I do remember someone
talking about it on one of these newsgroups).

Subject: *Weird* problem with Dual NICs
Date: Wed, 16 Jun 1999 23:22:42 GMT
I have a machine running Red Hat 6.0 with a freshly compiled 2.2.10
kernel. It
doubles as a router and has two NE2000 compatible NICs. Eveything seems
to
work, but I checked the logs today and found the following:
Jun 16 18:17:56 kilgore modprobe: can't locate module eth0:0
Jun 16 18:17:56 kilgore modprobe: can't locate module eth0:1
.
.
Jun 16 18:17:56 kilgore modprobe: can't locate module eth0:49
Jun 16 18:17:56 kilgore network: Bringing up interface eth0 succeeded
Then the exact same thing for eth1. It doesn't seem to find the modules
it
is looking for until the 50th try. Here is my conf.modules:
alias eth0 ne
alias eth1 ne
options eth0 -o ne-0 io=0x240 irq=3
options eth1 -o ne-1 io=0x300 irq=4
alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
alias char-major-5 serial
The strange part is that everything is working fine, ifconfig looks OK,
everyone can ping everyone else. I looked a little further back in the
logs and it was doing the same thing with the 2.2.9 kernel. Any ideas
as to what's happening here?
Thanks,

I believe that on SuSE 6.1 (the version I'm running), you
don't need ipfwadm. We have ipchains, and that does the
job nicely.
I could be wrong, but I'm using ipchains and it works
great as a firewall.
ipfwadm is for the older kernels. I could be wrong; anyone

Yes, it's possible. In fact, I just checked, and via-rhine is indeed
missing from the archive. I suggest you report this to Red Hat as a bug,
since it is clearly that. Adding the appropriate driver to the floppy
wouldn't be that tricky if you had a working Red Hat 6.0 system running,
but of course that puts you in a chicken-and-egg situation unless you have
another system handy. If I were running an appropriate system, I'd offer
to add the file and upload a modified boot floppy to an appropriate site,
but I don't have a system with the appropriate kernel version. :-(
Perhaps somebody else can do this, though....

killing lpd. I had to clean printer configuration
(rm -r /var/spool/lpd/* and /etc/printcap) to fix
it.
Do you have any idea?
Thanks a lot.
Emmanuel.

Subject: LPD problem with RedHat 5.2

Hello,
We use RedHat 5.2 as print servers in our data
center (700 remote printers). Everything works
fine for now 6 months.
But today I have an interesting problem.
If I try to print on any queue, the following
error messages is returned:
lpr: connect: No such file or directory
jobs queued, but cannot start daemon.
All queues are working fine on the backup print
server (exact copy).
I tried to enable-disable printers, restart LPD,
remove lock/status files, reboot.... Nothing.

Damn, I thought it was gonna be easy.
How about trying these at the command line (change the IPs to suit):
/sbin/ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.2 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast
192.168.1.255
/sbin/route add default gw 192.168.1.1
Since I've started slicing up 10.0.0.0 segments at work for a bunch of
class "c" ones, I've taken to putting the whole netmask and broadcast in
every line (so I don't forget to do it when I need it <g>)
But that will hard code the default into the routing table for the
kernel. You might have to put another line as
/sbin/route del <insert default gw>
Remember to do that with the one you've got now, and not the one you
want.
