IIRC the original version of the VAX cluster was 10 nodes, either Processors
or HSC's with the disks being capable of being connected to more than one
HSC at once.

Can you build something similar with NT? Can you build something similar
with Linux? (What happens when you want to expand the cluster? IIRC you
can only cluster 2 NT machines. Even then it's debatable if it's
anything like a VAX cluster.)

Subject: Samba: Winpopup to USER (not Computer)
Date: 17 Jun 1999 15:30:49 GMT
Hi all,
I have a question concerning Samba's messenger service (under Windows known
as Winpopup): Under NT you can use the "net send" command to send a popup
message to another computer. Under Samba that works fine with the
"smbclient -M" command if you know the computer's name of the person.
But: Windows NT also allows to use the "net send" command with a USER's
name, i.e. "net send charly" where charly is a user's login name. Then the
popup message will be delivered directly to the computer where the user is
logged in at this moment. If the person is not logged in, you get an error
message. This is a great function because you don't need to know the name
of the NT Workstation to send a message to a single person: "net send USER"
is able to locate the user (if he is logged in under NT).
Is there any similar function in Samba ? The "smbclient -M" command only
accepts computer names but no user names.
Thanks in advance and please excuse my probably bad english ;-))
Charly.

I suspect that you haven't got a route. Try route add -net 192.168.1.0
eth1 If that doesn't help, post your output from netstat -rn
Hope this helps,

Ever since upgrading to kernel 2.2.9, I get a series of four warning
messages every time diald-0.16.5 brings up a link:

My guess at cause: 'route' is version 1.33, and as the kernel-2.2.9 doc
says, I should use version 1.50+. So, I have tried to compile
net-tools-1.50, unsuccessfully.
I first 'make config'. and answer 'y' to all queries, then make:

hi
has someone tried booting linux (slackware for that matter) in
read-only mode AND been able to login
to his system afterwards ?
I tell my start file (/etc/rc.d/rc.S) not to remount the root
partition in read-write mode at boot time
and I put the directories /var,,/tmp in a writable area. The system
boots OK but when trying to log into the
system I am getting "unable to change tty /dev/tty1 for user root" and
the login prompt returns.
Trying to log in as another user gives the same.
Please help me getting my system usable when in read-only mode. I need
read-only mode because with the hacks
I performed on the system fsck is destroying the file system tree.

Subject: How to Flush ARP cache??
Date: Thu, 17 Jun 1999 15:22:53 GMT
Hi,
I have several Linux boxes and occassionally switch IP address when
doing testing or building a new system. For example, I might assign
a brand new Linux Box "A" the IP that was on an old Box "B".
The problem is that when I do the switch, nslookup and ping hang when I
try to reach an IP address or domain name that is outside our local
network; after 30 minutes or so everything works, which leads me to
believe that the arp cache is the culprit because it stores the MAC
address of the ethernet card.
So how do I flush the arp cache??? I did a "man arp", but it's not 100%
clear to me.
Instead of waiting 1/2 hour, I want to be able to flush the cache and
immediately use the the IP addresses that were transferred over from an
existing system to a new one.
Thanks,
Gil

Hi,
I have a strange problem and I couldn't find an answer in the
documentation.
I'm using RH6.0 (kernel 2.2.5-15) and everything (regarding NFS at
least) is fine.
I'm trying to recompile the kernel (in order to enable ISDN). After
compiling the kernel and the modules ( make xconfig, make dep, make
bzImage, make modules, make modules_install, depmod -a, make install)
I reboot with the new kernel and then the NFS daemon fails to start with
a message :
nfssvc not implemented.
I've tried it (many times, with small modifications in the
configuration, I think nothing concerning NFS) with both kernel 2.2.5
and 2.2.10. I always getting it.
Can anyone help?
Thanks,
Ilan

Hi..
I installed Red Hat Linux 6.0 using a network installation everything went
fine.
now when I boot into Linux I can't access the internet, I read every how-to
on this subject I still can't fix my problem. I have a cable modem, it was
working fine with the installation now it doesn't.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You.

Hi,
My two cents:
I just had the same problem as Larry.... NIC went south. caused the
linux box to hang and disconnected about 30 pc's from the network.
(screw 'em if they can't take a joke....)
Replaced the card and all is well. I have 2 linux servers. Both running
redhat. One is our company's mail server (over 100 users). The other is
a file server for about 40 users running samba. Not bad when you can
build a fileserver and it only costs you a couple of grand, including
the OS! Damn, linux makes me look good!

I had this problem and fixed by adding my workstation to the server's HOSTS
file, as someone on this group advised me to do. Everything is peachy now.

600 gives only read and write permission to root. 700 will give
permission to execute. I believe it is normal to set this file at
740.
