My route.conf works fine, except one line.
i have a bunch of stuff along the lines of:
123.123.123.123 the.gw.IP.number the.netmask the.dev
and they all work. but then one line:
1.0.8.0 its.gw.IP.number 255.255.255.0 eth1
doesnt get installed. i cant remember the exact error message during boot,
(and i cant get to it without booting this machine which i cant do right
now for various reasons), but the funny thing is, instantly after boot up
i can execute the same exact line with:
route add -net 1.0.8.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 gw its.gw.number
and it works perfectly.
what could be the problem, that it refuses to do it at boot time as it
should, yet it works perfectly fine after booting?

Windows networks require SAMBA on the Linux machine(s) .
With NT4.0, you'll additionally need smbpasswd (part of the SAMBA
package) for to get encrypted passwords (which the NT box uses
per default) working.

Look for the following entry in your sendmail.cf file and modifiy it to the
following:

# who I masquerade as (null for no masquerading) (see also $=M)
DMbogle.co.nz

This tells sendmail to re-address (masquarade) your outbound emails from
@host.domain.com to @domain.com. BTW: You will need to restart sendmail for
this change to take effect.

You should use ipchain for the function of a firewall.
If you are using SuSE Linux 6.1 you just have a look
in you PPP-Up script. There you can find an example how
to use ipfwadm.

A very good discription can be find at the web site of=20
heise verlag. But it is written in german.
No problem for you, I guess ;-)

what i want is filtering request in such a way that IP_1 allows
(dns,www, etc in/out) IP_2 (..) IP_3(..) and nothing else.
I tried dozends of configurations but allways ending with nothing

is not supported at all by ipfwadm (something similar works on Solaris
with ipfilter 3.x.y) ???

Anyone succseded with something similar ?????

This is supported in the standard kernel sources. Whether it is included in
any of the RedHat Kernels I don't know.

This is a Plug and Pray version of the above. Use the DOS software to
disable PnP and enable jumperless configuration; set the card to a
sensible I/O address and IRQ and you should be ready to go. (If using
the driver as a module, don't forget to add an io=0xNNN option to
/etc/conf.modules). The rset8019.exe program can be obtained from
RealTek's WWW site at http://www.realtek.com.tw - or via ftp from the
same site.

According to my 5L manual, all three lights means a hardware error that
requires calling HP support. This doesn't sound like a Samba-related
problem: what happens if you print directly from the Linux machine?

Hey,=20
which kind of authentication are you using? /share/user/domain
Do you use the browseable feature for your share?

One thing to get more information why a connection is not
established is the usage of higher debug level.

Try=20
log level =3D 3
log file =3D /var/log/smb.log
in you smb.conf file.

If the information you are looking for is not in the
logfile increase the log level to 4,5 or 100.
Be careful of the usage of log level =3D 100 because you can
see the passwords used for this connection.

Do not forget to delete the log entries in the smb.conf after
your "trace"!=20

http is handled easily by Apache
ftp is handled easily by proftpd

Virtual hosts in smtp can be configured in either smail or Sendmail with
varying levels of difficulty. I understand that q***l can do it, to.
I've never been satisfied with the sendmail solution.

pop3 is the problem. I have a kit somewhere that allows you to do that,
but it's been back-burnered and now I've forgotten where I got it.

The no nagle config option no long exists and probably the rogue
ifdef check should no longer exist either. Nagle is automatically
turned off on a per socket basis if you set the TCP_NODELAY
socket option on the socket. Turning nagle off globally is a
bit drastic in most cases.

Hi all,

I am thinking of setting up firewall, masq and NAT with kernel 2.2.10.
I have been looking into the sites related to those and found them
confusing.

First of all, is it possible to have NAT(1:1) and masq(1:n) on a Linux
box?
Secondly, it is not easy to tell which is better, ipchain or ipfwadm.
Which is better?

Could anyone post some example configuration for, at least, firewall and
masq that works with kernel 2.2.x, using either ipchain or ipfwadm.

Many thanks in advance.

The first IP address should be the address for the external

You will also need to make your connection from outside the
firewall. The forwarding uses the Masq code so it will not reflect
connections from inside back inside.

It looks like everthing is compiled in and working ok if the

If all they're wanting to do is a CYA maneuver, why encrypt the code?
Why test for stuff that Windows itself doesn't need? You say that you
think it was removed, well, if the AARD code was so darned innocent, why
remove it? It was disableable, you know? Usually, you don't make ANY
significant changes between the final beta version and the release
version. I've been in situations where a customer wouldn't even let me
change the version number to remove the beta indicator.

No matter where you stand on this issue, I think you can agree that
reasonable people might conclude that Microsoft certainly acted guilty, in
this case, whether or they were guilty of any untoward behavior or not.

I've been working on the same problem...but I've found some reasonable
answers. As for a burner, I bought the cheap model, the MCT-MEP-1C from JDR
Microdevices (http://www.jdr.com) for $129.99. For generic cards (like the
CNet I got), I bought 8k 150ns EPROMs (JDR #2764A-150) for $4.99 each. The
images in the Etherboot package labeled *.lzrom are compressed and fit on an
8k EPROM, however, the *.rom require a 16k EPROM, which will fit on most net
cards. If you e-mail JDR tech support with your question and card model,
they should have an answer too (and hopefully it will match mine :-) Hope
this information in useful.

You could try involking setserial in rc.serial with it's full pathname,

Could there be two setserials? Since it works from the command line,

Can miniterminal dial out? Does "ls -l /dev/ttyS0" look OK? Here it
looks like this:

crw-rw-r-- 1 root tty 4, 64 Jun 17 15:51 /dev/ttyS0

Is it possible that anything else uses /dev/ttyS0? "cat /proc/ioports"
will show the ports for devices; do any use 0x3f8? "cat /proc/interrupts"
will show IRQs for the active devices; does anything else use IRQ 4?

I can't help with particulars involving kppp or miniterminal, neither

Subject: 2 ethernet cards in RH6. Not as easy as it sounds!
Date: Fri, 18 Jun 1999 10:10:27 -0400

Ok, so I've read the ethernet How-to again and again and I seem
to be getting nowhere fast.

I have 2 ISA 3com 3c509b's installed in a 486 running RH6.

After using the supplied DOS utils to disable the PNP features
I configured them as follows.

1st: i/o 300h using irq 10
2nd: i/o 310h using irq 11
Both set to full duplex and drivers are optimized for "Server"

In my /etc/conf.modules I've tried the following 2 configurations
as defined by the ethernet howto.

First I tried this:

alias eth0 3c509
alias eth1 3c509
options 3c509 io=0x300,0x310

When I reboot it fails to "bring up interface for eth0" and doesn't
even look for eth1. I get the very same results when I try this:

alias eth0 3c509
alias eth1 3c509
options eth0 -o 3c509-0 io=0x300 irq=10
options eth1 -o 3c509-1 io=0x310 irq=11

The system is still in the setup stage so it's not actually connected
to a network.

The system also worked fine before I tried modifying the conf.modules
file to add support for the 2nd NIC. :)

Thanks for the help
