try http://metalab.unc.edu/mdw/linux.html.  it's the linux
documentation project (LDP) homepage.  it's got links to all
sorts of man pages (manuals for linux programs, available for
most programs that are installed in linux with the "man <program
name>" command.  links to HOWTOs, useful information on how
to do all sorts of things in linux (ethernet, programming, network
administration etc.) and get things working.  links to FAQs on
linux related subjects.  and other linux links (like how to get
started).  also try http://www.redhat.com for redhat specific info.
if you're really new to *nix operating systems, a book on UNIX or
linux might be useful, too.  i know it helped me.

Fairly new to Linux Red Hat 5.2 - My system's Loopback device (which should
be 127.0.0.1) doesn't display an address when reviewing through the
X-Windows based control panel. It will also not allow me to add the address
since "lo" is a special device. I cannot ping lo or 127.0.0.1 with any
success. My eth0 and all devices attached work correctly, but I need the
loopback address as well.  Suggestions on where to read or what what to do?

I recently upgraded my SuSE 6.0 to 6.1 (kernel 2.2.7).

After using smbmount (the new one that comes with Samba 2.x.x) to mount
a couple of remote shared drives on a Windows PC, the Linux machine
hangs on shutdown at the point where it is trying to unmount the remote
drives. I am logged on as root. 

I can unmount manually with no problem, so why does the shutdown unmount
go wrong?

I originally had this problem with a home-made upgrade to the 2.2.0
kernel, so I assumed it was just a problem with my home-made
configuration, but I'm now using the full SuSE 6.1 package and I have
exactly the same symptoms.

I am aware of the differences between the "old" smbmount and the new
one, but I can't see how this affects the unmounting operation, which
uses umount.

I've received advice on this in other places, including upgrading to the
2.2.10 kernel, but this made no difference. I understand it could be a
problem in the SuSE shutdown scripts, but I'm reluctant to touch these
without some good advice. Any suggestions?

If this is a known bug in smbmount, is there someone working on this? If
so, I'd be happy to help test any proposed fixes.

Drop the www in front of your machine name and try again. www is just a
name of your machine or an alias, when you get your domain registred, then
you can create an alias www and point it to your machine.domain.com. But you
will need to create DNS server or ask your ISP to provide DNS service for
you.

group I work for is finding the need to have a thousand or more
tcp connections open simultaneously per machine as the agents jump from
PC to PC in our 25 PC cluster.  We seem to be running into a Linux
system limit where applications are having trouble finding ports
and refusing to connect.  Can anyone provide some clues as to how
we might get around this?

Try adding your Win machine's ip address to the /etc/hosts file on Linux
box.

As far as pop3 goes, I was not able to make pop3 that comes with RedHat
work, so I've used Qualcomm's qpopper and it work fine:

Install samba to get the Linux box to join your domain or workgroup. There
is reasonable docs in the howto sections about this.
If you want you apache server to authenticate back to your nt domain, then
you should seek out pam_smb by David Airlie (think there is a link from the
samba site www.samba.org). We have apache running as our proxy for about 50
people at work :-)

I believe that I need to enable support for my on board Ethernet chipset in the
kernel somewhere. My motherboard - ASUS P2B-LS has what it says is an Intel
82558 Ethernet 10/100 chipset. I can not find any information about how to
enable this in the kernel (2.2.?). I selected "EISA,PCI,VLB and on board
controllers", but none of the controllers listed below that option resemble the
82558. How do I get this Ethernet working?

Indeed. That means that the PCI BIOS did not give an IRQ to that
card. Either the card itself is broken, the driver has a bug, or the card
expects the IRQ to be set by the OS (which would be rather strange, since
the BIOS usually gives the IRQs to the PCI devices). If you do have
a diagnostic program (usually a DOS program) on an accompagnying floppy,
try running it in DOS mode. Otherwise you might perhaps want to ask
the author of the tulip.c driver, the honorable Donald Becker , at the
aforementioned email address.

I have a Linux box connected to the internet via a modem and a W95 box
connected to the Linux box via TCP/IP.

2 questions:



1. Once the Linux box is connected to my ISP , I can go to the W95 box,
Telnet into the Linux box, run LYNX and get text only access to the
Internet. Is it possible to use Netscape or Explorer on the W95 box so
that graphical browsing is available?(I have spent many nights playing
with SAMBA and trying to understand IP_Masquerade but I can not get
beyond the point I described above).

2. My Linux box shows up in Network Neighbourhood on the W95 box and I
can browse it from there with no problem. How do I access files on the
W95 box from the Linux box?I presume that this would be done by mounting
the remote system's drives in some way but I am lost with this one.
